James Casey as a WR

alphajoker

I just wanted to see what everyone's thoughts are regarding James Casey as a WR. Not necessarily as our #2 or 3 but as least get the chance to compete with Jacoby and Walter for a WR spot. Casey has great hands, I believe runs good routes and is big enough to free himself off the line of scrimmage if pressed. I'm just not sure of how fast he is. Garrett Graham could become the #3 TE if they can resign Dreesen. Thoughts?

I personally think James is the most under utilized player on the team.... Heck, maybe in the NFL... On most teams he would be a solid starter at WR.... His hands are amazing and he's a workhorse of the highest order. I think one of the reasons he struggled with injury this year is having to quickly bulk up during the off season to play FB, which is a waste of his true talent. On top of that he's a family man and a great example off the field as well.... If the Texans don't seriously sweeten his contract I hope he goes somewhere where his talents are appreciated in both playing time and money. IMHO

Why not just let Dreesen walk and expect Casey to fill his shoes? As an H-back, he covered pretty much everything but QB this year. He split out wide, he blocked, he even ran a few carries....why not let him do that, be a matchup nightmare or fill the role he was drafted for? JC as a fulltime WR is a square peg in a round hole.

He's a much better mismatch against defenses at the TE spot. Too fast for a LB to cover and too big for a safety. That said, he could be split out wide occassionally, I just don't see him as true WR.

I like the idea of wheel routes from the FB position as well, again another matchup nightmare.

What we need to do is use him just like the patriots use arron hernandez. To me they are built almost excatly the same. Use him in the passing game. Line him up outwide, at tightend, fullback, runningback. Make him a mismatch in the passing game and even throw off the balance by letting him run the ball. James Casey = Aaron Hernandez

Don't be surprised if casey isn't on the team next season...I wouldn't..

I would be surprised if he's not on the team next year. He's under contract and isn't too expensive. I see him stepping in nicely if they don't bring Dreessen back.

I totally agree with you there. I don't think he got on the field enough when he was healthy.

That's pretty much my reasoning for coming up with the idea. I guess don't label Casey as a WR, but I believe he needs to be on the field more where
he is lined up in the slot, outwide or even coming out of the back field.

Yea we're going to cut him along with Cushing and Barwin.... :mcnugget:

lol - Casey will be on the team next season. And I also feel that they will play him more as a WR/TE than the halfback spot that he got banged around in. I think he would be a tough guard for a nickel corner. And too fast for some of those linebackers. The age of the TE is here. And we will be ready.

I'd also rather keep him closer to the middle than out wide. He's not a speed mismatch against CBs and Thor's height advantage is negated because Kubiak doesn't seem to promote throwing jump balls or 50-50 balls. He wants the routes to take care of guys getting open.

So if he's FB or the 2nd TE in a jumbo set, and constantly in motion before every play, that will only emphasize the unpredictability of a balanced offense.

He's not a wr. He also didn't impress me much last season and it would NOT shock me to see him NOT make the team next season. He doesn't have the yac ability I thought he would have or the running back skills.

With a 4.8 40 yard dash, Casey is 2 tenths off the slowest WR times. He'd have to run amazing routes & have great leap/reach/hands to even be considered at WR. Not happening.

Based on what reason(s)?

Vickers' dominant performance?
Casey didn't really do anything all that well last year. He wasn't really a great FB, not a great Hback, not a top TE type...he's just the NFL version of Snyder on the TV sitcom One Day at a Time. He's upgradeable since he's just a utility man at this point. He does a lot of things...but nothing incredibly well.

Vickers' dominant performance?

Exactly..there is one thing vickers does better than casey..and it is the only thing that's matters on this team...... that's run blocking..everything else casey does is mediocre and irellavent..

I dunno.... Watching James and watching Vickers, I never saw any appreciable difference in their blocking ability.... And I actually though Vickers missed more blocks with his increased playing time near the end of the season. I'm just as happy to let Vickers have HB, as having a player of James' versatility and ability in that position is a huge waste.

If they keep Dreesen, I'd rather the team allow him to get traded where he can further his career more effectively. Say what you will about him, but the more they expect out of him the more he will rise to the occasion.

But I'd hate to see a hometown hero go somewhere else...

Casey is the most versatile player on this roster, and he's under contract. I expect his workload to increase next season as he continues to get stronger. He's a willing blocker who did far better in the FB role pre-injury than I expected him to, has excellent hands, and runs routes plenty well enough to be a factor in the passing game. Vickers is a bit more bruising, but Foster and Tate both amaze me with their ability to get skinny and squirt through closing holes. He's a mismatch for everyone but corners, and it'd be a crying shame to lose him. Kubes said in preseason and again after the injury that the offense was essentially built around his athleticism and versatility. He's got the skills to be an effective TE, and he's tough across the middle. His performance as a run blocker coupled with guys like Angry Dre and OD that can stretch the field and work the seams make his abilities as yet ANOTHER pass-catching option out of the backfield a potential nightmare for opposing defenses. Assuming we don't see a Packers-esque drop-off on the defensive side of the ball, and we manage to add a legitimate threat at WR2, I can't see a single reason that's not game planning related as to why we shouldn't be the NFL's top offense next season. With all the free agents we've got coming up in 2013-14, next year's our year.

oh god, can we go a day on this forum without someone making the claim that player/coach/corp/depth on the Texans is the most/best in the NFL...

While I don't agree with the premise that Casey is the most underutilized player in the league, it is not a stretch to say that the Texans are the most well-rounded, complete team in the league.

How can anybody have a good or bad feel for Casey? He spent most of the season iwth an injury that sidelined MW. Casey isn't going anywhere and will provide the impetus for a SB run in 2012.

We need a fast wide receiver of some kind, but we can't afford to lose Kevin Walter any more than I can afford General Motors. He's too good at catching the ball and blocking downfield. Put Walter in the slot and draft somebody new to line up outside him.

The same James Casey that couldn't deal with contact off the line to save his life in passing situations? Casey is average at everything and a step down from Vickers in blocking. He's a utility man, not quite fit for any singular role and doesn't really create huge mismatches. If he did his name would be Gronkowski. He'll be lucky to muster 36 catches next season.

Nate

. At 28 and even with only 3 years in the league how much upside can he have with an increased roll?

I am not bashing just wondering

Do you realize only three Texans caught over thirty-six passes this year (Owen Daniels, Arian Foster & Kevin Walter)? Joel Dreessen only had twenty-eight catches. If Casey were to catch over thirty passes it would likely mean Dreessen is no longer a member of this team.

36 was obviously pretty lofty. I was responding to everyone's hailing Casey as this mismatch nightmare. look at the better TE's across the league, heck look at dallas clark. He was actually a matchup nightmare, so much that he caught 100 passes in 2009, every team had to gameplan for him. If he were the second coming he'd be open almost every play. I just don't see him getting more than 24 catches this year (better?).

I think Walters & Jacoby are sufficient 3 & 4 receivers. Just need a truer #2. KC won't let him go, but Bowe would definitely upgrade our WR corps to Championship level.

Hell Yeah, Bowe would. But the Texans won't have Duane Bowe kind of money to spend, and Bowe is a legit #1.

No, it would be more like Mario Manningham or Robert Meachem money for the Texans. A guy who could be easily be a #2 on most teams, but is sitting at the #3 spot due to too much talent.

I believe Manningham would be a great fit here as well but I don't see the Texans being players at all in free agency this offseason.

In my opinion we can't know what Casey can become right now. He hasn't gotten any real time at Tight-End and Full-Back isn't his natural position. Comparing a third-string TE to some of the best at the position doesn't seem quite fair to me.

You don't see him getting twenty-four catches next year? Alright, you do realize he was only six catches shy of that mark this year as a third string TE/FB? You don't think he could get six more catches next year if Dreessen is no longer here? Even if Dreessen remains that's still less than half a catch more per game next year. I would easily take the over on that number.

If you never increase his role how will he make a bigger impact?

I would certainly think if they stopped making him play shenanigans with positions and let him focus on being the #2 TE I bet we would see a marked improvement in his blocking and route running.

What the heck is Manningham gettin so much love around here for? Gee whiz, dude's hardly ever healthy and he's not really all that when he is.

Give me Welker or V. Jackson and a draft pick or two. *dreaming*

I wouldn't be opposed to bringing Lurrent Robinson in either. He's young and has decent size.

BTW, we might need to "sticky" a FA thread sometime soonish

I have the same question about Meachem.

Why is it all the tempting guys have issues?
Vincent Jackson - diva
Brandon Lloyd - head case
DeSean Jackson - lazy?
Meachem - underachiever (borderline bust)
Manningham - injury prone
Wayne - old & likely expensive
Bowe - VERY expensive

siiigh... filling this spot via free agency may be harder than we think
:kubepalm:

Yeah, I've been thinking the same thing....

Wouldn't Robinson be thinking about demanding more than WR2 money now that teams see he can be a double digit TD, and possibly 1000yd guy?

Regarding Meachem, it could be said that everyone not Graham, Colston, or Sproles underachieved. But 600 yards, 6TDs for someone not starting is worth looking at. However, the few times he's mentioned in game commentary I think he's regarded as having unreliable hands. The same used to be said for Pierre Garcon. But I think he's made some of the flashiest catches this year, and is a real threat for busting yards after the catch.

I hope they look for someone to lock down the WR2 spot and hope the draft gives them the WR1. The team's going to be pressed up against the cap for the forseeable future, and looking for a WR1 in free agency is just asking for an albatross. I'd like Doucet or Garcon.

I agree with Meachem. If Meachum can't make it in the offense he is in, he won't be as impressive in our offense.

I personally think we've got time... Let's draft young guys, UDFA, run them through here till we find something special, ala Victor Cruz, Laurent Robinson...

What makes you think Meachem can't make it in that Saints offense? He's had three straight years with over six hundred yards receiving. The Saints offense is more of a spread offense that gets multiple receivers involved. Meachem was one of seven Saints receivers to record over four hundred yards through the air. Meachem was fifth in yards receiving on that Saints team with 620 yards. Owen Daniels was the only Texans WR to have over 620 yards this year receiving (677). I would not be surprised if Meachem had a thousand yards next year with a different team.

He's behind Henderson & Moore on their depth chart. He's getting 600 yards in their "spread" offense. Like you said, we don't throw it around as much. He's not going to come to Houston & be a 1000 yard receiver, or a 700 yard receiver. He definitely won't be getting 6 TDs, when Andre can't get but 9 in a record setting year.

I wouldn't expect Meachem to catch six touchdowns here either but I think he would be a valuable #2 WR behind Johnson. I think he's a better WR than Jacoby Jones and I believe he would add something to this offense that Kevin Walter lacks. I thought Meachem was productive in an offense that had two 1,000 yard receivers (Colston & Graham) and multiple other options to choose from. I don't think 700 yards is out of reach for him in Houston's offense. I wouldn't mind Houston drafting a WR in the first round instead, though.

I see Meachum as a lateral move. A replacement.... maybe, an upgrade... not so much.
