Kubiak Press Conference: New Time

Kimmy

RealGirls LvFB!
Kubiaks press conference will be at NOON today rather than the normal 3:30.

Texans TV will carry it live.

@HoustonTexans Watch head coach Gary Kubiak's press conference LIVE today at Noon on #TexansTV.

He refused to talk about the Mario situation because he has no control over that.

The reason he kept JJ returning punts is because he made a mistake but he felt JJ had the best chance of giving us a big return, and players make mistakes and go on to make big plays, it just didn't happen this time.

Talked about having a meeting with each player today as lockers go cleaned out.

Said he wouldn't make any comments on what he thinks the team needs to look for personel wise in the offseason because its evaluation time.

Talked about how he talked to Andre and Demeco about becoming the leaders of this team.

Talked about the rookies, JJ Watt, Brooks Reed, and TJ Yates. Said he has talked to TJ alot since the game, lots of positives about all the rookies.

Said the play calls that went deep were his calls, TJ did not check out of the plays.

Other stuff

I usuall dog Kubiak for his play calling but for some reason I felt good that he let his young QB be aggressive. I think it helped the offense run the ball better.

Said all teams do "exit interviews" (not his term), and this year's were the most positive he has heard in his career.

I think it was a big factor in our ability to run the ball.

However, we get the ball with 2:52 left in the 4th Qtr... we hit three big plays with Andre Johnson... then the pick.

What happened to Foster? We still had 2 time-outs at that point.

He put the game in Tj & Andre's hands... forgot about the Horse that got him there.

I'm really surprised (& impressed) that this board is giving him a pass here.

I didn't want to say anything on game day, but I kinda felt like they were trying to be a little too cute with all the passes at that juncture in the game. I don't know why Foster, who had been on his game, didn't get a carry after those 2 completed passes. We had the timeouts and we had, IIRC, roughly 2 minutes left on the clock. IMO, if you run it with Foster and it doesn't work, your team will be around the line of scrimmage, and in an ideal position to spike the ball, run another quick play, or call a timeout. If it does work, the clock is running and you can just call a timeout.

Then again, I'm not an NFL Offensive Coordinator or a Head Coach.

I don't fault him. He tried to be aggressive and TJ made some mistakes that I'm sure he'd like to have back. If we would have ran the ball, people would be complaining about why we didn't throw it up and atleast give Andre a chance. There isn't a right answer, we lost.

Here:

(on what QB TJ Yates saw on the last interception) “The one where he was trying to throw to Kevin [Walter, WR]? I think we had third-and-long there, eight to 10, something like that, we called two deep and they were carrying Kevin and OD [Owen Daniels, TE]. Kevin’s trying to bend to the post, we’re trying to get him the ball. The thing I told him [TJ Yates] right there, it’s a moot point right now, but I said ‘your team’s still in a great position. Even if we don’t make that first down, there are seven minutes left. We punt them, we bury them in their own end, we’re okay.’ Those are just things a young guy is going to learn. It’s just a tough day to learn it.”

(on TJ Yates’ decision to go deep on the last interception) “There were two minutes left, and we actually had a different play called, but if we catch a certain coverage, if they play man free or play us in one safety, then we take a shot outside. They did, so they gave us a chance to make a big play. I want to go try to make it. We had a one-on-one with Andre [Johnson, WR]. We just didn’t hold Ed [Reed, S] in the middle of the field. We let him go get there. The kid’s in the right play with the ball, we just didn’t hold Ed in the middle of the field. Attacking coverage, you never know where the ball is going to go. That coverage told us to try and take a shot, playing one safety.”

I think they had the right calls, TJ just made the wrong reads and Ed Reed is a hell of a player. He made TJ think one thing and he did something different.

But hey, I also think we could/should have mixed in the run plays too. There was plenty of time on the clock and we had 2 timeouts. Also, I think we should have thrown short to make sure we got the 1st down. Again, coulda-shoulda-woulda.

I just watched the interview at the Texans web site, and Kubiak said all the right things. You'll learn nothing from watching or reading the transcript on the site, but you'll get a tiny bit of insite into Kubiak. As long as Wade comes back next year, I think Kubiak is the man for the job. If Wade is not coming back, I still don't trust Kubiak to bring in the right DC, hopefully Rick Smith handles that if worse come to worse.

This team is headed in the right direction, but we need another year of Wade Phillips coaching up not only the players, but the defensive coaches as well.

Don't forget the offensive coaches and Head Coach. I think Wade's influence goes far and wide on that team.

I would certainly agree with that. Wade is probably as good for Kubiak as he is for the defensive side.

I've been reading almost all the posts in the Texans forums since game day, my head almost wants to explode. There's a lot of good stuff on this MB, whether I agree or disagree with certain posts. Many of them make me think. I did not single out these two posts for any particular reason; just that they are among examples of a good, healthy MB.

With the talent that was showcased this year, I bet we wouldn't have a problem attracting a qualified candidate.

Hey, Baltimore's DC, where did he come from?

I think Kubiak's words go a long way toward my theory that Kubiak's strategy was to try and make Andre Johnson take over the game. That if we had to lean on ONE guy at the end of the game, it would be the guy who has been in a Texans uniform longer than anybody else...Andre Johnson.

I think that's an emotionally-charged strategy he concocted and I think it backfired. If it succeeds, it makes Andre Johnson a true legend.

Gary Kubiak is old school. He wants to let seniority play out as much as he can. IMO, he knows Arian Foster is the next big thing here...but he wanted to end or continue this playoff run by leaning on Andre Johnson. Kubiak is loyal in that manner, to a fault IMO. But, it is what it is.

IF this team remains together and IF we hit some home runs in the draft and use free agency wisely like we did last off-season, we'll be a Top 3 team again in 2012.

Everyone thought Yates was fixating on AJ. I stood up and said I thought it was Gary Kubiak's decision to do that, not Yates. Everyone was angry with Yates for locking in on AJ, but I think he was doing what coach told him to do. Now, maybe he needs more practice on faking his initial "look" with where he goes at the snap, I get that, but the strategy (IMO) was to ride the back of AJ.

You put a TRUE 100% deadly threat at WR2 opposite of Andre Johnson, and with our o-line and our RBs and our TEs out there with those two WRs...TJ Yates won't look like an interception machine.

Yates will have had a full camp with reps at QB1 instead of running scout team, several preseason games, and th ebenfit of having played in TWO playoff games the year before. Man oh man, you cannot beat that sort of preparation when you consider all that this team has going for it in terms of players and coaches.

I'm absolutely confident that with a good draft, and wise but bold free agency moves, this team will be a 12 or 13-win team in 2012.

So you're banking that TJ is QB1 next season?

I don't think he'll even be competing for the QB1 spot. I think it's a given that if Schaub is healthy, he's the starter. TJ has the potential to be our QB of the future, but he still needs some coaching up and some back up experience. If Matt's healthy, there isn't any reason to rush TJ's natural progression.

GP, there's a whole lot of "thought" & "thinking" going on here. Personally, I don't agree. I "think" it may have had something to do with TJ slingin' it to AJ while he was recouping from hammy issues, coupled with the fact that he's a late in the season rookie starter.

I'm rowing upstream here I know, but this young QB is going to mature. When he does, he'll be great.

It's late, hope that made sense.

There's no way Schaub is ready by Game 1 of the reg season.

IIRC, it was CND who was saying that the best and smartest route to go with Schaub is to see him midway through the reg season.

Depending on Schaub's ability to HEAL and subsequently REHAB, then throwing into the mix the whole issue of him having to take practice on the field AFTER rehabbing it to see how it holds up under a simulated game scenario of really pushing off that plant foot and seeing how it responds to real action, then you're looking at midway through 2012.

This idea that it's like Manning or Briesel's situation where you stay off it for a awhile and then you're back on it and ready to go a little while after is wrong. The Lisfranc is what keeps your foot from becoming a jelly-like floppy skin bag full of loose bones that rattle around. It's a BIG deal, and I don't see how anybody could reasonably anticipate that Schaub will (A) be running around at camp, (B) playing in preseason games, and (C) ready to take QB1 by opening weekend of the 2012 reg season.

Yates will be QB1, folks. And do not rule out Leinart getting cut in camp and Delhomme as QB2, either.

Make no mistake, I know that Bob McNair, Rick Smith, and Kubiak will all three be expecting to see Schaub at SOME point in 2012...because they all three have a huge, huge, HUGE decision to make for 2013. HUGE. Gigantic. Franchise QB decision making to do. So they will get him out there, but Yates will be QB1 on opening day. I bank on that.

Delhomme all but retired today. It won't be him. Linkage

No doubt about it: TJ Yates hit a wall vs. Ravens, and Ed Reed had a huge role in it. But I still "think" Yates was doing what the boss man wanted, he just did the best he could on that particular day.

Yates' days as QB3, coupled with the pressure of the situation, and what I "think" was Kubiak's strategy to ride the back of AJ as much as we could, it all sort of came together as perfect storm to see if Yates could handle it or if it was too much. With a full camp, etc., I think he can challenge for QB1 in 2013.

If he gets hot, early in 2012, we might not even see Schaub at all. There's no way to know. Schaub had said, back when he knew he was out for the year, that he would be ready by camp. I don't even know if he's telling the truth or if he's motivating himself by saying that. There's no way he's ready to take snaps by camp.

I wondered what he would do. Thank you for the link.

I cannot stomach the idea that Matt Leinart is on the roster when camp begins. He was a good sport, he tried his best, but he had nothing to offer. Nothing.

On the last Matt Schaub show, he says he'll be ready to go by OTAs

I remember what CnD said as well, but that's from the horses mouth.

I provided the link, listen to it yourself & tell me what you think he says.

Remember, CnD doesn't have access to Schaub's xRays & MRIs so his input is mostly speculative & worse case scenarios.. actually he goes through the gamut of scenarios..... Matt not being ready by game 1 was the worse case.

The things I've read about Schaub's injury indicates to me he isn't coming back for training camp. I'm not a doctor, but I did ask my personal physician about this injury, and he said that everyone is fooling themselves if if they think Schaub will ready to play football by pre-season, or even at 100% for the early season.

Fact is, none of us know just yet how fast Schaub is going to heal, but I'm going to be surprised if Yates isn't starting at QB for the early part of next season.

Well, if Schaub isn't ready to go by camp, then I agree with your assessment GP. I guess I just figured that there would be enough time for him to properly heal up. I didn't read the whole thread on his injury & estimated time for recovery because nobody on here knows for certain. If the front office knows that TJ will have to be QB1 for part of the regular season, then I'd bet that they will work his tail off this offseason to make sure he is ready. They did a lot with him in a short amount of time, so I have faith that they can improve on what they already did with a full offseason, OTAs, and a full training camp.

I think that's an emotionally-charged strategy he concocted and I think it backfired. If it succeeds, it makes Andre Johnson a true legend.

If Kubiak said to Yates: "Throw that damn ball to Andre no matter what" then I am still happy with that decision.

Arian is great but that is a 2 minute drill and a passing situation. We have seen Andre catch a ball in triple coverage with almost no window (Miami game with the Schaub keeper TD), we have seen him bowl over LBs tp get a TD (Arizona), and we have seen him make spectacular plays that make a defender in great position look silly (Redskins OT game).

If I have 10 chances in this situation I tell Yates to do the same thing 140% of the time (good old Russian math). If I am Yates I look at my coach and say "What the hell else did you think I would do?"

Andre gets the shot with the game on the line in the playoffs. He has proved time and time again that he can do it. There is no other conceivable decision for me to make here.

I think Kubiak decided that when Foster fumbled and Jacoby recovered it. That was pretty scary and Foster is lucky that the game didn't end that way.
