That was a great hit, but in today's game if you lay someone out 99.9% of the time they are going flag you for it whether it was clean or not. The play happens too fast and the NFL really wants to eliminate physically touching other players so the ref will always play on the cautious side. It's like in the NBA (which is such a joke league now), if someone drives to the hole and throws their hands up in a demonstrative way while screaming like someone just raped him, they will get the foul called every single time even if no one touched them.

I agree with you here. But I've already seen more than a few flags this year on totally legal and correct tackles.

I agree with Cush. It's getting to the point where if you hit somebody hard you are going to get flagged, whether it was an illegal hit or not.

I don't mind the flags being thrown on the hits, but the refs are just so inconsistent with the flags. There might be a clear personal foul, but they don't call it. Then there is a questionable one, and they call it right away. Maybe it is time for robot refs?

I don't blame the refs. They don't understand the rules any more than the rest of us do.

The real solution is to simplify the rules so that a human being can actually understand them. There is too much judgement required. And that isn't fair to the refs or the players, or the fans for that matter.
 
If you are a QB coming into the NFL then life is just getting easier and easier for you every year. Same goes for any offensive player.
 
Let's not forget that some refs and league officials play favorites. Try a legal hit on Tom Brady and see what happens next (you will get flagged and a fine from the NFL commish)
 
The refs aren't as bad as NBA refs, but with the whole emphasis on illegal tackles I have seen some NBA type calls being made...

Some hits they call...others they don't...

Star players getting start treatment...

Hits that shouldn't be flagged...

I'm for making the game as safe as possible though. Football is still a great sport and still watchable. As long as they don't take much more physicality out of the game I think it'll be ok...
 
Yeah that was a weak call. Pollard really lowered the boom but did it with spectacular form and STILL got called for it. This is about as weak as a ball carrier seeing the defender coming and lowering himself into the contact....then when the defender tries to get lower they collide and often times it involves a smack of helmets....then the defender gets a flag. Why? Isn't the ball carrier just as involved with the hit? I wish the league viewed the teams as equals, not the defenders as thugs who are just trying to break something and offensive guys as little weak, helpless, defenseless guys who never, EVER cause pain of their own. See: Duane Brown breaking James Harrison's face.
 
It's getting ridiculous, and like someone said any big contact is drawing a flag...

I'm not trying to be all macho here, because the lord knows i wasn't some tough ass HS player or anything, but these hits are part of the game and it's up to the receiver as to whether he wants to take them or not... All he has to do is use that free education and choose a different line of work...

I'm not talking about the obvious helmet-to-helmets where a player launches head first into a player and ear-holes them etc... (looking at you, Dunta), but hits like Pollard's, where the defender is doing his job... Or when, as someone else mentioned already, a defender goes for a clean tackle and the ball-carrier lowers their head just in time for h2h contact...

You're seeing a lot of these called this year with no fine backing it because the NFL reviewed it and found it wasn't a penalty... That should tell you somethin...

I hope it changes because these good hits are leading to penalties that result in points that wouldn't have been there... Get it right, NFL!
