Ryan

THIS YEAR
Per McLame:

Texans re-signed P Brett Hartmann to replace Brad Maynard. To make room on the roster, they waived OLB Jesse Nading

Waived Nading? That's weird.

Kept Braman over Nading ? I like their choice even though I'm still surprised by it ?
What's more Nading was a Colorado State guy, bet Kubiak hated giving into Wade on that one ?

Looks like we got guaranteed touchbacks though on kickoffs with him. He'll have to work on his punts and getting them inside the 10, but it seems like most of our punters have sucked with that anyway.

I'm surprised we didn't bring in Graham or that dude from.....well, I forget, Pittsburgh?

As far as Nading goes, he was ok but Braman is a beast. He may be raw but good pass rushers are hard to find and in this league if you don't put pressure on the QB, you're screwed. Wade will coach him up, rotate him in on passing downs and let him off the leash.

How many years have we heard them go on and on about how much they need to get a pass rush in order to stop anyone. This is Kub's year to get it done and I'm betting he is not going to let go of anyone that can get after the QB.

Letting go of nading does not seem smart to me.

I like braman, but I liked nading too. I thought overall he had a good pre season and he seems to be a lot stronger than braman. I thought nading could also play a little de if the situation called for it.

As far as bringing Hartmann back, I'm cool with it. I thought thats who they should have kept in the first place.

But I don't like cutting nading. Should have cut one of those corners.

You know Kubiak's preference for experience....
at least he realized he made the wrong choice.

From looking at the preseason, looks like he's just made his second bad choice in punters (hope not). Seems that Graham or the Steeler's FA would have been a more solid choice.

I keep wondering to myself, if they're that good, why were they released??
What does Pittsburgh and Arizona know about these guys that we do not??

The Steelers kicker's entire career short of one year was in open air stadiums in cold cities.....Jets, Green Bay and Steelers. Whatever is "deficiencies," they likely would be minimized in an enclosed stadium venue such as Reliant. Remember Kris Browns' positive transition?

Of course, the Texans could have low balled a vet.

First, there's only a handful of punters currently in the NFL that are good enough to really worry about (Lechler's probably at the top of that list). None of those punters has ever punted for the Texans, nor are any of them available as free agents right now. There's a few who are horrible, and the rest of them are pretty much dime a dozen, interchangeable parts.

One thing that's definitely true about Maynard and Graham (not certain about Kapino) is that they are vested veterans, meaning if they're on your opening day roster, you're paying them for the entire year no matter what. Hartmann is not vested.

My guess (or at least hope) is that because of that, the Texans went with one of those interchangeable parts who happened to have experience holding for Rackers, and who could be let go with essentially no cap ramifications if things go badly. Any time after week 1, Graham or Maynard or any other punter in the world can be brought in without committing to pay them the rest of the year if they suck.

That sounds potentially cold-blooded for Hartmann but it isn't a bad business strategy.

I get worried only carrying 8 linebackers when 4 of them ended last season on IR and 1 other had offseason knee surgery.

I share that concern, though I'm not worried about OLB. I'm worried about ILB. Perhaps they still plan to make a move there and then move Newton to the practice squad (they have left on space on the P.S., so something is coming)

Well you do have to admit they've come a long way from worrying who the starter will be on this team at RB, OL, DLINE, Safeties and CB to just hoping they stay healthy and backup whatevers. Health more than anything else is the #1 concern and you can say that about every team.

Right now this is by far the best and deepest team the Texans have ever put together and if Manning is truly in slow recovery mode, the cards are surely falling into place for them to FINALLY taking over the division. I think Kubiak has done an outstanding job with the offense that I really hope W.Philips can save his butt by getting the defense to show up and respond in kind.

This could be a great year to be a Texan's fan.

I'm not surprised to see Hartmann return. I won't be surprised if we bring in other punters during the season. I think ChampionTexan has the strategy of this right.

I am surprised by Nading. He's made some mistakes this preseason but he's also made some good plays. He's been Mario's primary backup.

Can anyone come up with a rational explanation for this punter business - on the surface it really looks like we don't know what the heck we're doing; create a competition, cut the loser, then cut the winner and re-sign the loser. Serious question: what is going on?

Jedi mind trick -- keeping the competition off balance as to which punter to game for.

I think the Texans are finally taking chances on players with upswing instead of keeping the players they already know . Braman has more talent than Nading or so it seems .

Agree that this punting deal has been a gigantic swing and a miss. And as bad as ST has been you'd think they'd pay more attention to it. It's almost like it's an afterthought.

"Oh crap, this punter we kept is crap!"

"What was the other guy's name? You got his number?"

Geezzzzz................

only rational explanation i can think of is the texans thought they were going to sign somebody specific and couldn't, or thought somebody was going to become available who wasn't.

Maybe they had notified the wrong guy that he had been cut and finally realized their mistake a few days later??

Seems so weird to me. You would figure they would have brought in a new FA punter if they were going to release Maynard.

Didn't they meet with Sepulveda during free agency? My guess is they had a deal in place to sign him when the Steelers cut him, assuming he was going to lose the job to Kapinos... Only, the Steelers kept him.

I wonder if Hartmann coiming back was because he fit under the cap where one of the others might have put them over.

Whatevs. I'm just glad Maynard is gone. At least this guy has a leg...

Releasing Nading surprises me a bit although he had to be last on the depth chart. Braman just brought a little more electricity to rushing and Nading didn't seem like a coverage guy whatsoever to me. So they went with the more talented one-dimensional guy, I'm good with it.

Still waiting to see if Bulman is enough for them or if they try to upgrade DE depth.

Perhaps they created cap space?

I think Nading still has PS eligibility...if he clears waivers

That's what I heard...

Maybe they left that last spot on the PS open for him.

Kubiak said they wanted a versatile player for the last spot that could play D-line, LB, TE...

I would think so, but wouldn't he have cleared by now? I would think we would've heard by now

I have no clue about the time line for that stuff but you are probably right...

Maybe they are weighing their options...I would think they'd want to have a full practice squad to start the season though...

Or maybe McNAir is just being cheap....:kitten:

Man, I really like Nading. I'm truly hoping he makes it to our practice squad.

The biggest surprise cut for me was Xavier Adibi. I thought he had a GREAT preseason and would be a great backup to have.

Might have something to do with his injury history. He's not exactly a sure thing to be there when you need a backup.
