Jerimiah Johnson

awtysst

Draft Guru
When discussing the Texans RB options for next year most fans list Moats, Foster, and a FA or draft pick.

However, I don't think anyone has mentioned the other FA we picked up after the draft last year: Jeremiah Johnson. He was placed on IR in August due to a separated shoulder. I figure, if this is his only injury, he will be ready to go by the time OTAs start.

The bad: he had ACL and shoulder injuries while at Oregon. In fact I think his shoulder issue was untreated from his time at Oregon.

The good: in 2008(a year he had shoulder problems) he rushed for 1,252 yards and 13 touchdown. He appears to be a good ZBS back in that he runs to the hole quickly and is not a fumbler.

If healthy, I think he can contribute and I wonder why nobody is talking about him. Perhaps he has been forgotten?

Because it has turned to draft season and every draft prospect is the hope of a SB ring and anyone who hasn't started before or only minimally pales in comparison. Don't know why that is the phenomenon but it is.

I completely forgot about this guy and the first thing I thought of when I read the title was

Because we can't rely on an often injured 2nd year player with no NFL playing experience. He can compete for a spot in training camp but the organization can't be relying on him to posess a roster spot- much less be an intrical part of the offense.

It's a good point. I'm guilty of this. I haven't really considered him at all... honestly, I just kind of forgot about him.

No the organization cannot rely on him, but i found it strange that the fans have not even considered him and pretty much forgot him. When he was signed last year I think it was pretty much assumed he would get IRed becuase of his nagging injuries. If healthy he would make a great addition to the running game. He split time with a guy named Jonathan Stewart, so he is used to being a complimentary back.

Yeah, I think once a player hits the IR he tends to be forgotten. Sometimes the answer to your problems is sitting on the IR and you don't always know it.

Maybe Troy Nolan has some ability to contribute...

Talent is not all there is to the pie see Davis and Stevie for exsample. They had the skills and talent to preform at a high level even though drafting Steve to come in and be the number one RB was a mistake IMO. Coming out of the NFL draft I do not think Steve was ment to be a long term primary RB. The Texans have had bad luck over time with RB's for the most part with a couple of them who looked promising i.e. Davis and Stevie who careers have now been hamperd by a long term injury. Another thing is to not only fix the RB story line but to also understand that two thirds of the OL was out last season and an upgrade at center would be nice too. Start Caldwell next season who should have been starting already IMO. I have said before the OL should be fixed and drafting a franchise RB who is not injury prone. Johnson might be the best RB in the world but, who wants him if he is going to be on the IR list all of the time?

I agree with you on the Oline but disagree with you on the RB. In my opinion with the way the Dline and LB have gotten so big, so strong, and so fast, there is essentially no such thing as a "franchise RB" anymore. More and more teams are going to 2-3 back systems simply becuase they know that they cannot rely on a single back. Look at the Saints this year: they split rushing yards between Thomas(793) Bell (694) and Reggie Bust (390). That's 1877 yards total, which is a pretty good rushing effort for a season. The year before: Willie Parker~1200 yards and Moore ~600 yards. Year before:The Giants using the three headed running monster of Derrick Ward, Brandon Jacobs, and Reuban Droughns.

My point is we should not invest highly in running backs and instead continuously bring in fresh ones. Lets continue to draft 3rd or 4th rounders or find FA ones. Lets get a rotation of 2-3 going. Then when they are no longer useful cut em and bring in a fresh one. Investing highly in a RB is a bad move in my opinion. So essentially lets get three types of backs: the speedy one that can break a big run, the medium sized one that can take some pounding, and the converted FB that can get the short yards. JJ could be part of the rotation and if he doesn't work out, then we get someone else.

I am not a fan of drafting a RB high.

Health is the key to all of this. I would not mind having three RB's. Will Johnson stay healthy though? That is the question. If so, then having a three headed monster with Foster, Johnson and a draft pick or Chester Taylor via FA is the way to go. Who gets cut though if Stevie returns? I'm sorry the word franchise probably gets thrown arond too much.

Health is a key, but if you have multiple options you simply slide players in and out. So, lets say Slaton goes on IR and misses the year. Ok, then we slide Foster, Moats, JJ, and draft pick battling it out. We likley start with Foster, Moats, and draft pick as the group and keep JJ and another FA RB or two on the PS. If Moats has fumbling problems, his workload is reduced or he is cut outright and then JJ gets brought up. Another FA RB is added to the PS. When Slaton comes back we continue to keep the best 3 of the group. Remember Slaton is a making 470k in 2010 and 555k in 2011. If we needed to cut him due to injury concerns it would not be too bad of a cap hit.

I think people get too attached to players. For me, I cheer for the name on the front of the jersey, not the name on the back. As long as a player is helping the team, great. The second he is no longer useful, get rid of him and bring in someone better. I may be "heartless" but football is a business, and rewarding a player that has lost something with a bad contract (ala Ahman Green) is a bad business decision that affects your team.

I own one Texans jersey. It is a White 02 jersey that says TEXANS in the name area. I support the Team, not individual players.

Great post. Chris Brown should still be cut. If Moats does not fumble then I think in a three back set he'd be serviceable but not great. That is all he'd have to be though in a three back set on the roster. Rep coming your way for the great chat going on here. EDIT must spread rep yada.

He is forgotten because football is a contact sport & JJ has proven to be unable to hold up. Does Tony Hollings ring any bells? The Texans gave up the 33rd overall pick by selecting him in the supplemental draft. He was coming off a serious injury too, never could get healthy to contribute jack squat :pissed:

Because it's just as likely that Johnson is released as it is he gets a spot anywhere.

Not me. You can go back and read my article at Battle Red Blog. I was seriously excited to see this guy get a shot, as I loved his game (his stiff arm's are ridiculous) at Oregon. Hope he puts in the hard work and surprises people in camp.

I remember watching those clips, very impressive!

Well, if the shoulder is fixed I cant see why jj should not be given a chance in TC, cant get any worse :)

Beerlover,
He has only missed one year and many of us on the board last year said he was already nicked up and we expected him to go on the IR anyway. Sure the Texans gave up the #33 for Hollings, but all they gave Jerimiah Johnson was a rookie UD FA contract which isn't too much.

I think Johnson is ready to contribute and will get a chance in training camp. If he materializes, great. If not, you stick him on the PS or cut him. But lets remember he had a 4th or 5th round grade but was passed over becuase of that injured shoulder. If the shoulder is healed, we may have a steal.

He might, but I think Kubes will carry an extra back due to the problems of last year. So, that may mean PS for him, but I would not be surprised to see him stick around here.

Thank you sir.

I agree, Chris Bown should be on his way out and Chris Henry probably will be as well. So that leaves Slaton, Foster, and Moats as far as those backs that played last year. With a serious injury, Slaton may be gone for the year. So, I imagine we will try to sign a rb in FA, draft a back, and pick up 1 or two in the UDFA group. Add that to a healthy Jerimiah Johnson and now you have 7 backs to play with (Foster, Moats, FA, Draft Pick, Jeremiah Johnson, UDFA 1, and UDFA 2). Our goal would be to have 3 that are good enough to play and probably another 2 for the PS. So we need to cut that list to 5.

Path to the draft is litered with almosts. an injury like this can only be overcome by extreme rehabing, focus & commitment something I see lacking in both, draft grades don't guarantee squat :choke:

So going into camp next year, we're going to have

Steve Slaton

Arian Foster

Jerimiah Johnson

Chris Henry

a Free Agent

a Rookie Draft pick?

Fair enough. Like I said we invested very little in him. I think we will try to sign one FA back, draft another, and sign a couple of UDFAs. If he can prove he belongs on the field, great. If not. he gets cut.

I think he has potential, but like you said, the draft is full of guys with potential. I say give him a chance in OTAs and camp and see what he brings to the table. He may just be what we need. But, having him on the PS should not deter our plans in getting additional backs.

I think Moats stays and Chris Henry goes.
Then again you could conceivable carry both into camp.

Slaton(injured)
Foster
Moats
Henry
Johnson
FA
Rookie Pick
UDFA X 2

It would give you 8 potential backs in order to find 3 to play and 2 to backup.

It would give you 8 potential backs in order to find 3 to play and 2 to backup.
There's an 80 man roster limit. So they can't carry 8 RBs into camp. There's not enough reps for that many backs, anyway.

How many did they take into camp last year?

Slaton
Brown
Moats
Foster
Johnson
Andre Hall (might have replaced Johnson on the roster)
Anyone else?

So 5 RBs, 6 at most. Slaton will be on the PUP list. The depth chart during camp will look something like:

Foster/FA/Draft Pick
Moats
Johnson or another rookie

I think Johnson makes it to camp only if the Texans don't pickup another UDFA they like more.

Personally, I'd bring Slaton, Foster, JJ, a 2nd/3rd rnd pick and 2 other newbies to camp. I'm only bringing JJ back in to give him a shot that he missed due to his shoulder. If the coaches aren't impressed fairly quick, whack him and bring in a 3 newb.

*Question* Doesn't Chris Brown's contract expire March 5? So we'd just let it expire and he'd be a FA, right?

Foster/FA/Draft Pick
Moats
Johnson or another rookie

I think Johnson makes it to camp only if the Texans don't pickup another UDFA they like more.
Are we ready to close the book on Chris Henry?
I haven't forgotten this guy. I was very stoked when the Texans picked him up. I was sad when we didn't get a chance to see him this past season.

I hope he shows up big in camp.

77 Yard Run Against Oklahoma State in the 2008 Holiday Bowl

83 Yard Run Against Oregon State

I remember when we picked him up, someone said that he might spend the whole year on IR... because they didn't believe he was fully healed.

I like what I saw in those videos, especially the second. Good vision, decent burst. Good balance, good speed, nice, nice stiff arm.

We need to load up the team with the best talent we possibly can. If Jeremiah Johnson can beat out whatever Free Agent, Current Texans, or draft picks for a spot, more power to him. But to just say "here's your chance, kid!" and ignore a serious need would be stupid.

qft!

I was never big on this guy. It was always Foster for me. JJ just seemed like a poor mans Slaton to me. We needed then, and still do now a bigger bruising back that can get the short yardage.

They need to draft a RB in the 1st/3rd rd

I would like to see one of of Dwyer,Spiller in 1st rd or Mathews/Gerharts in rds 3 or 4.

Then draft a speed RB that can fill the role of KR/PR and 3rd down RB. LaMarcus Coker would be my choice as a late rd pick.

I hope the RB thing shakes out like this

Dwyer
C.Taylor
Foster
Coker
Slaton on IR
C.Henry hopefully he can beat out Foster he's really talented
Johnson on the PS

Adding these guys to the RB would turn a weakness into a strength.

JJ is only an after thought to me. Slaton, Gerhart, Foster and Chris Brown OKlahoma are my four. Moats and JJ have to beat out these guys.

No the organization cannot rely on him, but i found it strange that the fans have not even considered him and pretty much forgot him. Maybe because there is no reason to talk about him. He hasn't done anything for the Texans and he wasn't even drafted, so what is the point of talking about any hype about this guy? I heard a ton of stuff from a few people after the draft that tried telling me that he would be this great addition to the Texans when I wasn't happy that we didn't draft a RB in the first few rounds, and well the guy didn't even play. Holler at me when this guy gets on the field and starts doing some impressive things. Other than that, he's just a name out there that the Texans picked up.

I like him and it didn't cost us but the vet minimum and a little love and time. I think at the very minimum we got our third down, change of pace in the guy if the shoulder holds up. And if he is Joppru, we didn't lose very much. If the sky isn't falling with Slaton, and he does come back, I'm for anything that reduces the number of his touches. We know Johnson has natural hands and can catch . We know he has some wiggle in the open field. What we don't know is can he pick up a blitz and be a willing blocker. The only thing that will prove that is reps.
