Thanks to Alan Burge for his eternally interesting subject matter:
In addition to playing 6 games against AFC South opponents next season, the Texans will play 4 inter-conference games against the NFC East and 4 intra-conference games against the AFC West.

The home and away sites for NFC East opponents will be the same as in 2002 and the sites for AFC West opponents will be the same as in 2004.

The two games yet to be determined (against AFC North and AFC East opponents) are based on final standings which won't be determined until Sunday night.

The Texans will play the AFC North opponent at home and the AFC East opponent on the road, however, the Texans could finish anywhere from 2nd place to 4th place in the AFC South so it won't be known until Sunday night if the home opponent is Pittsburgh, Baltimore, or Cleveland, and if the road opponent is the Jets, Dolphins, or Bills.

Here's how the Texans 2010 schedule looks if you're making early plans:

Home: Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Tennessee, Dallas, NY Giants, San Diego, Oakland, AFC North opponent (either Pittsburgh, Baltimore or Cleveland).

Away: Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Tennessee, Philadelphia, Washington, Denver, Kansas City, AFC East opponent (either NY Jets, Miami, or Buffalo).

Considering, I like how our home / away games work out as it pertains to some of the tougher opponents appearing at home.

Biggest non-division challenge in my eyes is unquestionably Philadelphia.

Despite Sunday's upcoming game and the guaranteed excitement to follow, I can't help but begin to get excited about next year already!!

Go Texans!

I like how the best teams on the schedule are home games. The away ones are tough but Philly is just about the only one that really scares me. We can win the other ones.

Yeah that's one heckuva home schedule. Y'all with season tickets are getting your money's worth next year.

I could see Reliant getting a national game (or maybe two) next year too. I'd love to see Texans/Dallas on SNF (I like it better than Monday, sue me) at least. That one's going to get nasty.

Philadelphia by the way is the only team a Houston team has never beat. The Oilers never beat them and the Texans are 0-2 against them. Time to beat the Eagles.

I read somewhere that we play Dallas there. I've already heard a lot of fans say they are making plans to go to Dallas. I'm confused. BUT, sure hopei it is a home game

It's a home game. It's our third regular season game with Dallas, the first of course we all remember. The second we lost in Dallas, so it's back here for 2010. I'm sure we'll all be pumped up for that game. I sure as hell know I will be. :)

Thanks for the great information. Something I've always wondered about, though. Do the games against the same place finisher from the other divisions (in the case of 2010, the AFC East and North) rotate as far as home and away? In 2007, when we played all the teams from the AFC West, we played the Dolphins (East) at home and the Browns (North) away. In 2010, it looks like that switches (North at home and East on the road)- is that the logic behind the scheduling?

I wouldn't be surprised to see us get a couple of primetime games next season. We have had one home primetime game for the past three seasons, so it feels like we're due for a roadie.

The home Dallas game is an obvious choice, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a road divisional game on SNF or MNF. So, that's what I'm going with -- Dallas and @Indy as our primetime games next season.

Yeah that's one heckuva home schedule. Y'all with season tickets are getting your money's worth next year.

We will see. I'm not getting too excited about anything just yet. I was excited about the Dallas game, but that has waned a bit.

This team can't handle high pressure games, and can't handle high expectations. So I'll wait and see how they do against next year's tough schedule before I get too excited.

The division games are likely to be mostly losses, the NY Giants will be better than we all think, and San Diego will be a challenge.

Like I said, we'll see.

Currently, each team's 16-game regular season schedule is set using a pre-determined formula:

386px-NFL_Schedule_Sample.PNG

A sample scheduling grid, with a single team's (the Browns) schedule highlighted. Under this hypothetical schedule, the Browns played the teams in blue twice and the teams in yellow once, for a total of 16 gamesEach team plays the other three teams in their division twice: once at home, and once on the road (six games).

*Each team plays the four teams from another division within its own conference once on a rotating three-year cycle: two at home, and two on the road (four games).
*Each team plays the four teams from a division in the other conference once on a rotating four-year cycle: two at home, and two on the road (four games).
*Each team plays once against the other teams in its conference that finished in the same place in their own divisions as themselves, not counting the division they were already scheduled to play: one at home, one on the road (two games).

This schedule guarantees that all teams will play each other at least once every four years, and will play in every other team's stadium at least once every eight years. This schedule also guarantees that regardless of a given team's final divisional placement in the previous season, the 16 games that team plays in this current season will consist of:

*four games against opponents who finished the previous season in first place in their respective divisions,
*four games against opponents who finished the previous season in second place in their respective divisions,
*four games against opponents who finished the previous season in third place in their respective divisions, and
*four games against opponents who finished the previous season in fourth place in their respective divisions.

The pattern for intra-conference games by position is Home - Home - Away - Away.

That's why the Texans played the Dolphins at Reliant in both 2007 and 2008 and why the next two intra-conference games by position against the AFCE will be away (in '10 and '11).

In 2009 the AFC South played the AFC East so the 3-year home and home rotation took precedence (Texans played at Miami in '03 and '09, and home against Miami in '06).

So the reason Houston played Miami three years in a row (like Cleveland and Oakland it seems) was/is a combination of the 3 year division rotation intra-conference scheduling formula and the intra-conference games by position formula. ... if any of that makes sense...

At any rate, the shorter answer to your question is that the pattern for intra-conference games by position is Home - Home - Away - Away.

looks pretty cupcake to me IMO

After this year it seems teams are not afraid of the NFC east anymore

and i just got a hunch if SD fails to win the SB this year they will implode

We could BARELY get through this year's schedule, and you think next year's schedule is cupcake? No words.

never depend on an NFL team to be consistant from one year to the next. Just because next year's schedule looks rough right now doesn't mean a darn thing.

Their aint no cupcakes in the NFL.

Unfortunately that goes both ways.

However, I see that Dallas, NY and Philly have good cores that will return next year and possibly improve in some areas. If Wade Phillips stays or goes will be interesting. Personally I think Garrett and Jones are the problem in Dallas.

From what I hear Shannahan to Washington is all but a few formal Rooney Rule interviews away. I expect Washington will be tougher to deal with next year.

Even if SD loses in the playoffs the team is loaded with talent. Again a good core will return. Denver is a team that scares me in that despite such a big turnover they look like a few pieces away from being contenders. Oakland has played well when they get consistent QB play. I expect to see Russell on the bench next year, making him the leagues most expensive backup. Never know, like you say, but I don't see KC making big strides next year.

This last week is going to be interesting as well setting up who we play next year. A win likely means we'll be looking at playing Baltimore or Pitt, neither will be fun and then Miami or Jets, which neither look like they'll be fun next year.

That just covers non divisional games. Either way the schedule at least right now looks to be brutal. However, if there is any good news to come out of this schedule is that it looks like we'll have the bulk of the tougher games at home, which is a plus.

u think the other teams fans are looking at the sechudle and saying awww The texans that might be tough ??????

or awww the AFC south we have to play the Jags texans TItans and COLTS !!!!!!

No team in the NFL can take our offense lightly. None of them. And our defense on a good day can stop most teams. On a good day.

No reason for any team in NFL to look at the Texans as a for sure win.

This appears to be a very tough schedule, although like others have already said, it is extremely difficult to predict how good a team may be from one year to the next. I don't mind us having to face a lot of really good teams, as it is time for this team to put up or shut up. If we actually want to make the playoffs then we might as well beat a bunch of playoff contenders along the way.

There are no easy wins on this schedule, and it will test our team to the limit. We will HAVE to play a lot better within our own division to stand any chance at all next year.

We have been one of the most consistant. The Texans hover around .500 every year. Just sayin Thorn. :throwball:

Snyder in an uncapped year will be a terror on the free agent market. If a free agent has a pulse, I expect them in a Redskin uni in 2010.

I don't know about the "good news". The Texans have been less than good at home this season. They've slapped around some weak teams, but haven't topped a decent squad to date. Maybe that trend turns around, the Texans were 12-4 @ home in '07-'08. But, I don't see much good when looking at the possible schedule.

You're right in theory, but between the extension of the time required to become an UFA, and an extra Franchise/transition tag for every team, the FA crop might not be all that great. The best hope is that without a floor or a cap, cheapskate owners may take the opportunity to jettison some high-dollar contracts, or avoid the franchise tag because of the dollars involved, but who knows which players that might make available.

I wouldn't argue that, but it wasn't my point. Predicting how hard your schedule is for next year based on the teams is not totally accurate, which is the point I was tryiing to make. Injuries, trades, coaching changes, individual players having a better/worse season than normal all contribute to teams not performing as predicted.

And it's now official.

Home: Kansas City, San Diego, Dallas, N.Y. Giants, Baltimore

Away: Denver, Oakland, Philadelphia, Washington, N.Y. Jets

Plus the division.

From a fan's standpoint, that's an exciting home schedule. I would expect a primetime game or two.

2010 is going to be a quite difficult. But a playoff team gets tough wins.

Home: 2009 record
Indianapolis 14-2
Jacksonville 7-9
Tennessee 8-8
Dallas 11-5
NY Giants 8-8
San Diego 13-3
Oakland 5-11
Baltimore 9-7

Away:
Indianapolis 14-2
Jacksonville 7-9
Tennessee 8-8
Philadelphia 11-5
Washington 4-12
Denver 8-8
Kansas City 4-12
NY Jets 9-7

10-6 I hope.

Primetime games (just guessing):

SNF: Dallas
MNF: Tennessee (home), Indy (away)
TNF: Denver (Thanksgiving)

:)

our road sechudle looks dawnting

Jacksonville
Tennessee
Philadelphia-hopefully we play them early and out of the cold factor
Washington
Denver- hopefully playing at mile high will not cause breathing problems
Kansas City -Arrowhead is a hard place to play
(either NY Jets, Miami, or Buffalo)- IMO hopefully not at buffalo in DEC

All of our games are in out door no roof stadinums

Unless the new NEw york place has a roof does it

thankfully this year i think we won all our open roof Road games this year

The new Meadowland stadium is not domed.

It seems like we play Oakland every year. Anyways Oakland-Washington-Kansas City are really the only schedule padders this year. The rest will be hard fought wins or losses.

It's way to early to tell what all these teams will be like next year, let alone the Texans. However, if the schedule is tough because all the teams are good next year, then fine. It's time to see what the Texans are made of.

At least it seems that way. We all know that teams can and usually do change dramatically by the time next season rolls around. What seems to be an impossible schedule before the season becomes a cupcake one before its all said and done.

The real key to me is when and where, more so than who.

Zorn's been fired. I expect it to just be a matter of time before Shannahan is inevitably announced as the HC there. Won't be an easy game then.

Oakland has played surprisingly well when they have even near capable QB play.

I think you'll likely be right about KC, barring them really going out and addressing the OL.

It looks like Tennessee is playing at Miami so it is either the Bills or Jets for us...

We finished second in the division. We'll be playing the Jets next year as well as Baltimore.

Again next year's schedule should be pretty brutal.

Golden, do we know if that is away for the Jets yet? Sorry for the premature questions, but I live in NYC and would love to be able to see the Texans here!
