Brian Cushing - Defensive ROY

Despite Kubiak and the offense trying to keep the Bengals in the game. This dude just single handedly closed out this game for us. On the last 2 Bengals drives he forced a fumble and made an awesome INT.

Props to Cushing and the D turning it on the 2nd half. Now if they can just figure out how to play both halves.

Responsible for pretty much all of our turnovers today if I'm not mistaken. What a beast. Def ROTY front-runner if he wasn't already.

don't know bout that, kinda like Demeco and Mario, but with those three, the future is so bright, I gotta wear shades:doot:

At this point I would take Cushing over Ryans. However I am personally challenging Ryans to prove me wrong.

all the haters that said he wasnt the best pick for us can have a nice slice of humble pie with mario serving it to them

The game ball should go to Cushing. Great pick and great player. The guy just takes it on himself and makes plays.

I'll be the first to admit that I wanted Melauga instead of Cushing in the draft, but I didn't have a problem with the Texans getting a LB at all. I just thought Meleuga was the better player at the time. Well, now it's nice to see that I was probably wrong. Cushing is a total beast in every sense of the word. Love having that guy.

The complaints about Cushing were mostly injury related. He's six games into his rookie year and has already missed the preseason, and had another injury that had him listed as questionable for today. If he stays on the field it's a great pick. If he ends every season on injured reserve, not so much.

You're a patty short! :foottap:

The guy is showing so many skills at a level few reach in their careers and he's doing it from day 1. 6 games does not a career make but there's little questioning his resume right now. So far he's shown pass rushing ability, run stopping ability to either sideline, jarring wrap up tackler, now throw in a pick for coverage and ball skills? Not even halfway through his rookie year and his impact is pushing the defense forward. Very impressed with him.

I gotta agree. I think most people knew he had the potential to be this dominant but were concerned with his ability to stay healthy.

I hope he continues to play this well and I hope he can stay on the field.

Just goes to show I don't know jack squat about assessing NFL-caliber talent.

I dreaded the idea of drafting Cushing. Was I ever wrong.

Dude is a freaking monster. He has changed this defense. He makes it better all the way around simply by being on the field.

the defense keeps improving and we keep winning he should get some votes for defensive player of the year.

Very impressed with Cushing, but Curry might be the DROY. I can't really say who I like better -- I love Aaron Curry. That's ok if Curry wins though. Gives Brian something to play for next year and a chip on his shoulder.

Something tells me he plays better when he's ticked off.

i must say, i didn't like the pick when we made it, i wanted matthews, but he's making me a believer every week. He is certainly in the running for DROY after today's performance.

I have to say, I was lukewarm to him in the draft, taking all those rumors about him being a workout warrior and such as the truth, but he really has brought this defense to another level. So far, I can't think of any other rookies playing at his level or with the same importance he brings to our team. Without him, we're the same D as last year; this year, we've got some attitude!!

It's official, I have a man-crush on Cush.

He should get DPOW at least. I wanted Matthews in the draft for sentimenstrual reasons, but I was happy with Cushing. He has brought an attitude to this team we've needed for a long time: SEEK AND DESTROY.

It's one thing to get a rookie who you can stick in there and be solid, doesn't embarrass you (Quin, Barwin, McCain). It's another thing when you can get a rookie who goes in there and impacts games every Sunday. Cushing is dependable, makes big plays on a weekly basis, and brings an attitude to the defense that was previously lacking. With Mario, Dunta, Pollard, and Cushing we've got some attitude out there - I like it.

I agree. I was also part of the Matthews camp (trying to hide my past now by wearing a Cushing jersey).

also, LOL at "sentimenstrual"

Quin falls into that group too. He's a big hitter. You might want to include #59 as well.

I'm glad we picked him! I had given him a slight edge over Maaluga & Mathews during the draft! I had always trusted the front office to make the right choice! They wanted an attitude/energy guy & they got their man! It's funny that he never played a down in any pre season game! So, he really had to play through the speed of the NFL! I really like the guy's game preparation & it shows on the field that he listens to his coaches & the other vets! I hope he becomes DROY!:cow: (Haha, I'm not sure about this dancing cow!)

this i s exactly how i feel about him at draft time & now...

First to admit I HATED the pick. Glad I'm not in charge of the draft. Great player. I think I owe him a letter of apology. :texansam:

From his blog:

In my rookie year I’ve found that I really have no time off at all. On Tuesday, my day off, I went to the stadium to work out, then I had treatment, iced my shoulder, iced my knee, got a massage. I went home and got in the hyperbaric chamber for an hour. Then I just hung out watching film of the Cincinnati Bengals, and that was really the only time I had to myself all week.

This quote from Chron.com:

“They needed a big play, and I knew they liked to throw the deep over-the-middle route, so I was able to cheat, read Carson's eyes and make the interception,” Cushing said. “He threw it hard, but I would have been real mad at myself if I didn't catch it.”

That's what I liked about this draft pick from the beginning. In his first press conference in Houston, he said "No one is going to work harder than me." That's all I need to hear from a draft pick to earn my trust, and now that the hard work is paying dividends, he has earned my confidence in his ability as well as that of Smith and Kubiak.

That's also a clear message to anyone calling for firings. We've had three good drafts in a row now. Would you really be willing risk ending that trend because you can't stomach a learning curve?

We hit on a first rounder this year. Lets not go overboard about the overall draft.

Love the guy's work ethic.

When Kubiak gave Cushing the starter's slot the minute he was signed I figured it was some sort of crappy political thing where the front office had to prove they made the right pick.

Wrong! The guy has earned the position with his work ethic and he continues to prove it on virtually every down.

Great pick.
