The Jacksonville Jaguars are nearing a deal for free agent wide receiver Torry Holt, but it has not yet been finalized, sources tell ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Holt was released by the St. Louis Rams on March 13 shortly before he was due a $1.25 million roster bonus on the 17th.

Holt, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, ranks 11th on the league's all-time reception list with 869 catches.

The 10-year veteran caught just 64 passes last year for 796 yards and three touchdowns, the fewest scoring catches of his career. His total receptions and total yards were the second-lowest of his career, ahead of only his rookie season of 1999.

The Jaguars are in need of a veteran receiver. The team released troubled receiver Matt Jones last month after he violated a plea agreement from an earlier drug charge. They also released Jerry Porter and didn't re-sign free agent Reggie Williams.

I'd like to see them land Bouldin but donno what they could offer them.

Yep, Bouldin would be a better one for the Bears, but I don't think they can swing it. Cutler would be doing cartwheels though if they could snag him.

Really surprised at the overall lack of interest in Holt. Would've thought a few teams that could use his services to get over the top would be vying a bit more like the Eagles, Giants,Panthers or Chargers. I think the Jags might be in hurry to get this done not just because they need to help desperately but because once the draft arrives we might see some trades for other WRS like Edwards and Boldin, then suddenly some teams are going to be left with glaring holes at WR. The interest in Holt should jump if that's the case.

Wow, nice deal for Holt there. Guess he had a good bargaining position...got a pretty nice wage, and he's gotta be happy with getting 3 years after his worst year since his rookie season...

I hope he is Jerry Porter v2.0 - free agent bust! At least when the Jags play the Texans. :texflag:

What evidence do you have that Tory Holt has been anything but the consummate professional ? Our edge over the jags has always been they had crappy receivers. It means they do not hvae to reach for a reciever....in a fairly deep draft for receivers in round one. Reaching for those two DEs hurt them last year. Hears hopping they are still crippled just enough, and their guards don't get too healthy tooo quickly.

Kinda like the final scene in John Carpenter's the thing...you know something is under the floor.....but you would rather not see what it looks like now.

I think the point was just hoping it doesn't work out for the jags, not a character comparison. Almost $7 mil per year is a big commitment, almost AJ money. I see Holt as still a productive player, but not in that class.

They haven't always had crappy receivers 3TP. When they've had good receivers they couldn't get the ball to them because they had a crappy QB.

Fortunately for us Jacksonville is where recievers go to die and Holt will be no different. Every old WR thinks they're going to be "Jerry Rice Lite" and go down the road and show the team that let them go what a mistake they made. Most though end up being the full version of Eric Moulds. Holt is 33 years old, slowing down, and going to a team that is snakebit when it comes to the passing game. It's almost like T.O. going to Buffalo. It makes so little sense you just can't not look. It's like a train wreck in slow motion.

Mark my words. Torry Holt has the worst season of his career in Jacksonville this year and then retires.

You know, towards the end of their careers, the greatest wide receivers tend to be pretty bad. I sure hope that's the case.

As much as I hate to say I like this signing, and I do, they still have to make up for being too full of themselves and getting rid of Marcus Stroud and Mike Peterson. Not to mention, their O-line might still be in shambles.

I imagine his knees are worst then being reported and did not see much in the way of offers. He is only guaranteed $4 mill this season and could be cut after if he does not produce. Jags suck BTW.

I hope you're right, but to compare Holt to Porter isn't fair. Porter was a simply stupid/desperate signing on the part of the Jags. His whole career was/is nothing more than unrealized potential. Granted, Holt's got a little more wear on the tires, but I think he's got some tread left too (although 3 years for $20 Million might be a tad on the over-optimistic side).

To put it in perspective, Porter was a 30 year old receiver who had fewer than 300 catches when he was signed by the Jags (still does as a matter of fact), had only 30 TD catches, and no post-season honors. Holt has over 850 catches, over 70 TD catches, 7 Pro-Bowl seasons, and 1 All-Pro season.

Holt is unlikely to get to a Pro-Bowl with the Jags or anyone else, but even at 32, he's a better WR than Porter is, ever was, or ever will be.

That's exactly what this is. We've been down THIS road before, and you can just see how similar it is to the Capers era (minus the winning):

1. Those Jax defensive players QUIT at the end of the game at Reliant.

2. Their coach looks clueless, frustrated, and completely OK all at the same time when he's on the sideline watching his team quit when the chips are down.

3. Solid defensive players are gone.

4. And now? They go out and over-reach for Holt.

5. They need a true QB, not Garrard.

The only bonus, for the Jags right now, is that they lost Fred Taylor but they still have a good running back left on the roster. We didn't have that luxury when DD pulled up just before Kubiak's arrival.

A solid QB and a few solid defensive players MIGHT get them back on track, but I wonder if everything that's gone on with their former defensive leaders, the two WRs who had legal problems, and the one WR who should have retired...and now they tack on another nearly-retired WR...if that's too much for Del Rio to recover from.

I say Del Rio is fired at the end of the year.

I say they go after Beanie Wells

And I don't see Beanie Wells being anymore special than Jonathan Wells.

If they went with Wells, then that really would be the nail in the coffin.

I think it was Schein, on foxsports.com, who said the Jags ought to move up for a QB. That's not a bad idea. Garrard is atrocious if you keep him in the pocket and Richard Smith isn't your d-coord.

Move up? They are sitting at #8!

How overrated is this QB class gonna get before this thing is over?

Because there is Stafford, Sanchez, and then a steep drop off after that. If a team in the Top 7 needs a QB, and the Lions are one of the 7 who do, then that leaves either Sanchez or Stafford for the other 6 teams...or they can wait another year. And I'm banking on one of those other 6 teams deciding that they better take one of the two remaining QBs who are in the top tier of the QB class this year.

And that's why neither Stafford nor Sanchez will last until pick 8.

That's my thinking. One reason why the Jags have liked tall receivers is that their QBs haven't been terribly accurate. Big target. Holt isn't particularly tall.

/said as a terrible QB who loved tall receivers because anyone, even me, can just throw it up there.
//hope this post isn't a jinx.

I have a new nickname for him. Torry "Ahman Green" Holt. A past his prime veteran who squeezes one last contract from a team who has a position to fill with more money than sense.

I am going to differ with the majority on this one. I think Holt has some tread left on the tires and will be a real contributor for them. I think the days of "Big Game" are gone, but I do think he can be a good WR for a couple more years. I guess we'll see, but there's my prediction, such as it is.

I think several of you skimmed the original post that mentioned Porter. He was saying that he hoped Holt would turn out to be a free agent bust like Porter. He didn't compare them at all.
