State of the Franchise(NFL Network)

Kubiak thought there were better QBs in free agency than Rosenfels, thus the reason for trading him and signing Orlovsky.

Marshall Faulk doesn't think we'll get to .500 next season, questions Matt Schaub and Slaton.

Jamie Dukes thinks highly of Kollar, thinks we might reach 10-6.

Faulk doesn't think our line is good enough for Schaub to be a drop back QB, thinks it was a mistake to trade Rosenfels, as does Dukes.

Overall, the shortest State of the Franchise I've seen on the show.

I follow many sports, and football analysis is consistantly and confidently off.

what kind of self respecting analyst questions the AFC leader in yards from scrimage, as a rookie too, he'll get better. I know this is pointless, but i am just constantly baffeled by the things that come out of football analysts.

Nothing new, nothing suprising, they said a lot of the same stuff people here on this BBS say. And really, who cares what they say? Until we prove ourselves by making the playoffs a few times, nobodys gonna have a whole love of love for us anyway. What ever happens to the Texans this year depends on so many things it's just unreal. And we haven't gotten to the draft yet.

They panned us pretty bad. Rich Eisen started things off by saying we went 8-8 the last 2 seasons and got most of our wins late in the season when all the meaningful games were over with. He's correct, but at the same time he made it sound like we beat teams that didn't have anything to play for...but I seem to remember we booted the Bears out of the playoffs at the end of this past season.

Marshall Faulk said Steve Slaton isn't a full time back (despite being the rookie rushing leader and AFC leader in total yards) and either him or Dukes said our OL is not very good (despite blocking for the # 3 yardage offense in the NFL).

Faulk said we're not gonna pass .500, Dukes said we will but we're still gonna miss the playoffs. Overall, I think they overgeneralized on past stereotypes of this team (bad OL) and past stereotypes of players (Steve Slaton being solely a 3rd down back).

They also were very harsh on Schaub. They seem to think the reason he missed all of the games is because he cant take a hit (Dukes said, "He must've forgot while he was in Atlanta that defenses hit pretty hard!") and glossed over the fact 4 of his 5 games missed this season were due to 2 illegal cheap shots by Jared Allen that got Allen fined 50k. Perhaps Dukes should've said, "He must've forgot while he was in Atlanta that Jared Allen is a dirty player!"

That's what happens to the Texans on every show really. We get no respect and until we get into the playoffs and win, we will continue to get none. I think it's unfair that we get such a bad rap, but that's the media for you.

Apparently Tommy "Golden Boy" Brady forgot how to take a hit too. He missed the entire season from a single hit that was much less severe than either of the two back to back hits Schaub took.

Exactly. After we put togeather a few winning seasons in a row, the press we'll be getting will be more fun to watch. But you know folks, it's like that for all the teams, not just us.

I think we just kind of burned up all our "Dark Horse" mojo last season. Everybody was speaking very highly about us after things started to line up toward the end of the season in '07, then we came out and went 0'fer in the first 5 weeks.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice.... fool...we can't get fooled again. *insert goofy W. head bob* :cowboy1:

It would be nice if we could get some Cardinals karma though. BSPN has been saying they're going all the way since the infamous "They are who we though they were!" incident.

its coming clear now

We got our other DE we got depth now in DT

we need our Second RB now !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did Dukes say the Texans brought in Wilson from Arizona at about 3:23?

Anyways, they all made good points b/c lets face it, Schaub has yet to start all 16 games. Steve Slaton might just be a one hit wonder (I hope not), and aside from Mario Williams we rarely have guys in the QBs face.

All legit concerns but I think 09' we will get over the hump, if not then....:wild:

I saw it said the Texans will be on Path to the Draft tomorrow. Yeah the state of the franchise thing was lame. Gotta earn respect to get it I guess.

Well that was a waste of dvr space. I had to apologize to my TiVo.

I hope they keep doubting us though. More bulletin board material for a team that needs to take a huge step forward.

Marshall Faulk doesn't think we'll get to .500 next season, questions Matt Schaub and Slaton.

Questions Steve Slaton?!?!?!?!?

After he made up all those bullshit excuses last night why Reggie Bush is a good back in this league and not a bust, during the Saints' "state of the franchise". He was all over Reggie's jock strap, seriously I almost gagged....he even used the "decoy" excuse, how the hell could he question Steve Slaton

What the hell did he have to say about Steve?

He laughed at the prospect at having him as our star running back. He said we need another running back. He hinted at the pre-draft stereotype that Slaton isn't a 3 down back.

Hope Steve and the gane knows about this...would love to shove it in Faulk's face when and if Slaton makes the Pro Bowl with 1,500+ yards and 12+ TDs!!!

:pirate:

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Slaton regressed next season. I actually don't expect him to match his numbers.

It's also true that Schaub's yet to prove he can start 16 games.

Hmmm...I don't think he will regress.

He made some pretty spectacular runs, sometimes just vanishing inside a pile and then re-appearing out of nowhere to break off a 15-yarder or even take it farther down the field.

He was scary deadly around the edges of the oline, and he pretty much single-handedly made the Jaguars defense give up when we played at Reliant. They had had enough of Steve Slaton.

Our line will be better after having a solid year of Gibbs' system and mentoring under their belt. Schaub seems to have hit the next gear, and our offensive weapons are all coming back.

The only way I see Slaton not living up to his rookie numbers is due to a lot of key injuries on offense. We had a great non-injury season. If a few guys get busted up, all bets are off. But that's true of any team. So that's not going to be Steve's fault.

I guess I'm trying to say that Steve Slaton probably loves the idea of Steve Slaton flying low under the radar.

He made some plays that I hadn't seen since DDW...but DDW didn't have that overdrive gear that Steve has. It's like DDW was taken away early, but we got him back (in a way) in the form of Slaton. Weren't they both drafted in the 3rd, and were deemed 3rd down backs (at best)? Groovy.

Steve Slaton isn't going to regress....granted he may slide in the running game a little since defenses will key on him more and hopefully we'll have that 2nd back to take carries off of him that we need, but one thing we didn't get to see out of him last year was his receiving skills. (yes he posted good receiving #s, but he's more talented than that). The guy has Westbrook type receiving skills....especially in this offense, if Kubiak can utilize them. This guy has some of the softest hands around and they weren't used near enough last year (coming from somebody who watched him a WVU, I kept complaining about it...it was a part of our offense we didn't use near enough.). Too many times Kubiak tried to bang him aroung the goal line instead of taking advantage of this skill.

Steve Slaton can do everything Reggie can (including the receiving ability).....and he can also run the ball effectively (which Reggie can't). Marshall is just trying to save face, because when Reggie came out he started the "Reggie Bush reminds me, of me" campaign. Seriously how can anybody "jock dance" Reggie Bush, then question Steve Slaton? It doesn't make any damn sense.

Steve Slaton is more like what Reggie was supposed to be coming out in the draft.

I can't believe I stayed up to see this. Biggest waste of my time in a long, long while.

Yesterday they spend about 15 minutes showing Reggie Bush screens and how a running back should block a linebacker in the passing game, and today our Texans are shown for 5 minutes. 4 minutes are spent on negative comments about Schaub and our apparently bad running game, 20 seconds is spent on a positive comment about Bill Kollar, and the other 40 seconds are spent on information they remember from the 2007 season and 2008 offseason. (Still mentioning Slaton only a 3rd down back...ect. Bah.)

Hopefully our Path to the Draft will be a lot better.

I just watched them both and I think you guys are all overreacting. First of all the length of each segment was almost identical, the one on the Texans lasting about 5 minutes and 40 seconds and the Saints about 20 seconds longer. They are both up on NFL.com right now. Marshall doesn't like our chances in the AFC South because all the other teams have showed they can win and we haven't. I see us going over .500 this year but he has a valid argument. The main criticism of Schaub was health and Dukes did state that he likes him a lot as a QB. Getting rid of Rosenfels is the equivalent of the Rockets shipping off Alston. I doubt we miss him but its something for people to talk about. They weren't overly rough on the OL because there is definitely still room for improvement there, especially in pass protection.

I didn't watch it, but didn't care what they said about Schaub, because I agree he has to show he can stay healthy....my only gripe was what the said about Slaton. Since you said it's on NFL.com..I'll go check it out.

But.......

BTW, wasn't the NFC South WAY more competitive than the AFC south last year? Shouldn't the "Marshall doesn't like our chances in the AFC South because all the other teams have showed they can win and we haven't." argument also be used against them? Just saying....Marshall is trying to save face, this is a guy who openly said he's "tutoring Reggie and Reggie is his protoche"......he's tied to Reggie.

Ah, it's the offseason, of course we're overreacting!

I was p.o.'d when I heard it live, but when I went back and watched it again on the website, they really voiced the same concerns that some of us have been voicing.
They said in order for us to take the next step (win the division or make the playoffs) these things need to happen...

(a) Schaub needs to stay healthy all season (they did acknowledge all the weapons we have on offense and gave Schaub props - when he's healthy). They questioned the wisdom of trading a proven backup and replacing him with an unknown in Orlovsky. Seems like I've heard those questions on this MB

(b) Slaton needs a quality backup - "everyone knows its a two-back league now days". Anyone disagree? I know I don't.

(c) We need sacks/QB pressure from DL guys not named Mario. All opposed?

(d) We need to win inside the division Faulk: "The Colts have OWNED this division since its creation." Eisen: "Tenn. had to start the season undefeated to knock off the Colts last season". No argument from me. Most of us think we have to at least go 3-3 if not 4-2 in the division to make the playoffs.

All those are things we've been saying over and over again

...and they didn't even mention our suspect CBs, no playmaking FS, our need to upgrade the LB corps, the thought the OL needs upgrades in the middle, or our inability to reliably stop the run.

So after listening to that segment again, its as if they've been listening to us

Like someone else said, we won't get respect until we knock off the Colts and Titans and make the playoffs

And we shouldn't.

Then goes on and on about how Slaton can't carry the bulk of the load. I understand that Slaton needs a guy to get 7-10 carries a game, but Steve is a 1200 yard rusher. He had 230 ish yards vs the Tiatans, 100+ a game. The only guy who did that all year. Show just a little respect. Its this kind of 2nd rate reporting that needs to go. Expect Slaton to pass Reggies career rushing yards totla by week 3.

I think his numbers will slip a bit, but thats because he will have a platoon. Moats and a 2-4th round running back to spell him will cut into his numbers a little.

I'm sure we'll get another back in the draft who will take a bit of the load off Slaton. Slaton will get his 1000 yds plus running and some passing yards added in for a second year in a row, then they'll change their minds.

But again, these stupid analysts on TV don't often look at individuals, but base their thoughts on teams as a whole and spout off garbage about individual players on those teams.

Made worse by the fact that they really spend no time analyzing the Texans. When we win the AFC South, they'll shut up. Maybe.

Not suprised one bit. It's been like this ever since we passed on Bush and took Mario. For some reason there are still people out there that think we should have taken Bush and some analysts (Faulk) just refuse to admit they were wrong about him and admit that he is not an NFL RB.

Wake me up when the season starts...

With Greenwood and Weaver gone our defense will vastly improve.

How many analyst had the Cardinals in the Superbowl last year?

Faulk probably hasn't seen Slaton play too much since college cuz for anyone to say that is just asanine. Barring injury he will only get better.

Outside of not discussing how Schuab got injured and not revelaing our other warts, they were spot on in my opinion.

DANG IT! ... I'm sucked in.

For me, the issue isn't negativity. It's that there is clearly so little thought and study that goes into the few pieces we do see about us. "Schaub can't stay healthy." "Slaton is too small.". They citicised the line but I bet they've never watched those guys play and couldn't name more than two of them. My guess is that they remember the David Carr grocery commercial and then Mel Kiper suggesting Duane Brown was a reach. And, they formed an opinion with commentary based solely on that.

As Texan fans, I think we complain more than many because of the sheer lack of coverage. Meanwhile, the same guys will spend hours overanalyzing stupid crap like who liked T.O and who didn't and every bit of irrelevant garbage.

Thank God for Sirius NFL Network. I can listen to Tim Ryan and Pat Kirwan criticise the Texan OLine all day long without complaint, because it's interesting and thoughtful and the guys have actually engaged their football minds and watched the team play.

I actually didn't watch the NFL Network segment or the ESPN draft thing because I think both networks are worthless when it comes to almost any studio or highly produced show. Give me a critical blog by LZ or that new guy, Jeremy on the Chronicle (2 great pieces the past week breaking down the offense and defense by position) and I'm there! I'll watch Jaworski and Hoge or maybe Mark Schlereth... other than that, keep those ex-football players trying to become entertainment personalities the heck off my multi-media!

Outside of not discussing how Schuab got injured and not revelaing our other warts, they were spot on in my opinion.

They did have good points, but that gets lost when they leave out things like Schaub missed 4 games because of a cheap shot. It lacks credability.

I didn't have much of an issue with it either. Practically everything they said was true.

I'm sure McChinless will be the one reporting for the Texans on Path to the Draft. I'm interested to see what Mayock has to say. IMO, he works his butt off at what he does and he's very good at recognizing talented players.

They've had Casserly on Path to the Draft lately and I might hurl if I hear Texans come out of his pie hole.

I thought it was a good piece. Other than calling Smith, Wilson they were dead on.

I didnt get the impression that they called Slaton a 3rd down back. Just not a full time back. Which is true. We need a back to split carries with or he is going to end up like DD.

yeah, true that. just mentioned Connor Barwin, Casserly stated he lacks polished game, would like to use 2nd on someone more ready, that it will be important not to feed him too much right away. So not worth a 2nd rd. pick to developemental, but some team will take him that run a 3-4 @ OLB. Gee, sounds kinda familar maybe he should have heeded his own advice? see Jason Babin, possibly the worst draft projection ever aside from Tony Hollings both yours Mr. Path to the Draft Casserly :gun:

I hope we smash our divisional opponents. Sweep them and go 6-0.

Another 4 or 5 wins, and the tune will change on the stage sets of the TV shows.

Until then, we really ought to just keep walking down the road. Fans get upset about this, players are busy trying to improve on their game.

He's not a 30 carry a game back, but who is now a days. Slaton IS a full time running back, he just needs a spell back. That doesnt make him a part time back, that makes him human. Thats what bugs me.

Slaton is a full time back he just needs part time guys to help him through the season, like every back in the league. Right now, we don't have anyone that can spell Slaton or pick up the load if he gets injured.

The NFC South had a good season last year but that is also the division made famous by the team that finished in last the year before becoming the division champ the next. I mean Atlanta finally broke the streak this past season but they came real close to pulling it off. If any of those teams replaced us in the AFC South they don't do any better than 3rd, no one could convince me otherwise. As far as Reggie is concerned Jamie Dukes probably dislikes him as much as Marshall likes him but honestly I could care less at this point.

Charles Hill was a worse pick than Babin, who led the team in sacks the year before Mario...or Mario's rookie year, I can't remember.

It was a fluff piece on NFLN because they are obligated to do a State of the Franchise for all 32 teams.

Did anyone really expect much coverage (and respect) for a franchise that has never broken .500? Seriously, it is unrealistic to think that anyone outside of Houston Texans fans think of us as anything more than a dog team.

The stuff on Schaub was a bit weak, but dude still has yet to finish a complete season. Obviously there are reasons for his injuries, but on paper, it just looks like he is 'injury prone'. While I looked forward to this SotF, I went into it knowing that they'd gloss over any depth and run with the generalizations about the Texans. I got exactly what I expected in that regard.

But please, NFLN, PLEASE tell us more about Cutler and the missing T.O. in Buffalo! I can't wait for the next installment off all that crap. [/sarcasm]
