This loss is possibly a blessing in disguise when it comes to next season

Hear me out. I hate that we lost today. I have been on such a high this week after beating the Titans last Sunday and now the crash sucks.

That being said, this loss should have been the nail in the coffin for the Dick Smith reign of error in Houston. If we had a half decent DC there is no way JaMarcus Russell and their no-name receiving corps would have torched us like they did in the first half. That was embarrassing and we were the ONLY team they lit up like that.

Dick proved that he does not have what it takes for the millionth time and I would hope McNair realizes this and will demand his firing now that a 6 game winning streak is out the window.

Shanahan is in over his head too and should get demoted. Those 3rd and 4th inches play calls in the 4th quarter were atrocious. I HATE our slow developing pass plays in the redzone.

Hire competent coordinators and we will make the playoffs next year. That is more important than a relatively meaningless win.

I don't see how the guy could keep his job. It just would not make any sense.

I'll tell you what this is not a blessing in disguise. Andre Johnson looked like he was ready to change teams. He has never had a good QB to throw to him. Matt Schaub is not even decent IMO. Makes stupid decision after stupid decision.

Disagree with you there. I think Schaub is a good QB and far above being "decent".

I think Andre Johnson was frustrated by the Raiders D.

wow, you know I usually wait a day before I post b/c I 'm usually to pissed to think level headed but come the hell on. This was a trap game from the beginning. Everyone knew this going into it and still didn't prepare. Mistakes, alot of mistakes were made today. It happens. It was rainy and piss poor tackling showed for it. The only blessing in disguise that I saw for this game is we will get a better draft pick than I'd origanlly hoped for. Other than that I saw nothing good from this game other than you got beat by a subpar team for not being prepared, take this as a lesson don't get big "dallas" heads and play with heart agains the bears and go out on a high note.

I think Aj was frustrated by the lack of faith in him by our QB, HC and OC.

Who cares if the CB lined up across from him is going to the ProBowl? Throw the damn bubble screen. Let AJ pound him. Instead we punk out and let the vaunted OAK D dicate that the best WR in the league will get 2 damn catches?

That's bunk!

No, this is a horrible loss for this franchise. Next week against the Bears is not a given - 7-9 after the Packers/Titans games would be terribly disappointing.

He won't. You'll know when McNair has had enough when he hires a consultant.
Shanahan is in over his head too and should get demoted.
He won't be. And why do the coordinators always get the blame, when every offensive and defensive call goes through Gary Kubiak's headphones?

I knew there was a reason I never come to the MB on game days. Holy over reaction responses Batman (directed generally, not specifically).

Ya think. Some folks must hit themselves in the chin with their knee every Sunday. Kind of funny sometimes to watch them spaz out.

All you've got to do is watch Weaver and Greenwood stumble and bumble around for a game. It ain't the coach. What it is is a whole lot of people highly over valuing the defensive talent on this football club. The Raiders ain't this good.

Same old problems....send five or six no one gets there. No one.

I don't care who you are, if you are the best cover corner in the game, you're going to change the way the opposing team plays. That dude basically shuts down half the field because he's that good.

THAT'S what it looks like to have a shutdown corner. They are few and far between, but they can and do shut down whoever they are covering. I would throw buckets of money at that guy.

It will only make minor differences there will only really realistically be a 2, perhaps 3 maximum change in places in the draft depending on the last two games.

No, the only blessing is that it was a later kickoff, thus midnight by the end of the game in England, and thus too late to have a depressed Texans drink, thus saving my liver any more pre-christmas abuse. And even then, a blessing? No...I'm just sober and dissappointed.

I was at the game today and even managed to sneak down to the 2nd row of seats right behind the Texans' bench.. there's another thread saying that the team was just flat today and that's exactly what the case was.

Point fingers all you want, truth is the Raider's defense actually stepped up today. AJ playing like he wanted to be on another team? Please. Nnamdi Aso..Asum..Ashoblahblah was like a blanket on him all day, he played terrific and Johnson just had one of those (rare) off days.

The last pick Schaub threw was an absolute gift, I swear to God I could see the red ribbon tied around it from where I was sitting as he handed it to Oakland, but that doesn't really matter because the game was over at the point and he was just trying to make something happen.

I really hope this rekindles all the Sage vs. Schaub psycho-babble that this forum has been missing during the four game win streak, because I really miss those good laughs provided by all of the people who really don't know what they're talking about.

The Texans got beat by a team that REALLY wanted to win today, and sometimes that just happens. I'd be pissed if we had something to play for other than a 9 win season, but in reality we don't. So let's just hope we beat the crap out of the Bears next week and have a safe, great game to close out the year!

Kubiak did mention he was not satisfied with practices all week. I think this one is more on the players. sorry :specnatz:

That is exactly what we saw here last week against the Titans.

Next week is a huge game for this team/franchise.

I was kind of waiting for that, every game is the biggest game of the franchise.

Disagree with you there. I think Schaub is a good QB and far above being "decent".

I think Andre Johnson was frustrated by the Raiders D.

Schaub's only talent is that he has Andre Johnson to throw to

Walters' only talnted because he shares the field with Andre Johnson

This game proved that we need a real No. 2 WR.

It will only make minor differences there will only really realistically be a 2, perhaps 3 maximum change in places in the draft depending on the last two games.

You got that right. I was trying to be nice and not post my "Obligatory Bright Side Thread", but I just have to weigh in on this one.

I'd rather have wins than the good fortune of picking a few slots higher due to losing, even once the team is out of the play-off hunt. I don't think picking a little higher helps all that much anyway, since the players never pan out in their "as picked" order. Earlier picks always cost a little more though, so the Texans will have that going for them. :)

I was just watching the play-off picture stuff during half time of the Sunday night game. Two of last year's lousy teams - Dolphins and Falcons - are 10-5 and have clinched play-offs berths. I'd trade the Texans "building the right way" for those teams' mad dashes to success right now.

Spinning another 8-8 record or a decline to 7-9 as incremental improvement doesn't have the cachet as would the team winning and being in the play-offs, at least to me.

We needed to sign Michael Turner. Since that ship sailed...well, we have a lot of cap space and the Giants can't really justify paying Brandon Jacobs when they have Ward and Bradshaw.

Also, AJ said he's going to try his best to recruit Nnamdi Asomugha. Did I spell it right?

However you spell it, I hope he makes it happen. He was more than impressive today.

If you think about it...he was a big reason we lost. He shut down AJ and that made our whole offense look mediocre...

But that is normal. If you shut down Peterson, LT, if you stop Peyton...all those Offenses stop clicking.

AJ is the guy we need clicking. It's obvious him having just a average game opens up all the other weapons.

Schaub's only talent is that he has Andre Johnson to throw to

Walters' only talented because he shares the field with Andre Johnson

This game proved that we need a real No. 2 WR.

Well then, why did he show how good he was last season when AJ was hurt?

Kevin Walter has proven to me that he is a legitimate No. 2 WR, over and over and over. I don't know what more you could ask of a No. 2 WR, in my opinion. WR is an absolute strength of the team, and they don't need to be spending any draft picks, or FA money on that position. They are set.

Other positions are not.

it's valuable energy, not to be wasted. I actually heat my water on this stuff. It hasn't been as hot since GP started to knit....take it fwiw.

I have to disagree with this. I too was a Walter skeptic at the beginning of the season. But he has bent over back wards to prove me wrong this year. It even took Reggie Wayne 3 years to turn into the receiver that he is today.

As far as Schaub goes, I don't know what was wrong with him today. There were plenty of opportunities to hit AJ and he hesitated and continued to pull a Carr. He was even getting angry and lost his cool on a number of occasions. He was even pacing the sideline at the end of the game looking like he was wanting to fight someone.

This was an odd day.

The sunshine from the board after wins is also a valuable source of alternate lighting. Those over reactions don't have to be wasted either.

NFL defenses will make good QB's look like that from time to time...that's kinda why you need good running games, and good defensive teams to win in this league. Take something you do best away from another team and force teams to beat you with what they do second best. Our team defense and second best trait wasn't good enough today...plus we are soft as the sta-puff marshmellow mans hiney...but that's another story in itself.

I knew there was a reason I never come to the MB on game days. Holy over reaction responses Batman (directed generally, not specifically).

I tend to give myself time to calm down after a loss before I post. Plus I wasn't too surprised about this one.
(a) "Crash" after the "High" of a big win is sorta to be expected. "Big wins" are new territory for these younguns.
(b) AJ going up against the best CB in the NFL.
(c) They (Oakland) knows how to effectively combat our ZBS since their HC learned it at the feet of Sensi Gibbs himself. (d) they put up a 30-burger on the Texans-North (Denver), who, like us, has a good offense but a suspect defense.

I just hope we aren't becoming a team that plays to the level of our opponent

I have to agree withthe above post ...

I watched the game a second time and noticed several instances where AJ had created more than enough space ....

I just don't know how I can agree with you and the poster you quoted when AJ has been leading the league in receptions and receiving yards. Why was this game so much different? IMO, the blocking sucked, plus we just never got into a rhythm. I think we seriously underestimate how much that onside kick towards the beginning of the game hurt us. It really took the momentum away from the great scoring drive our offense had just had.

The Texans got beat by a team that REALLY wanted to win today, and sometimes that just happens. I'd be pissed if we had something to play for other than a 9 win season, but in reality we don't.

Exactly ! If we were competing for a spot in the playoffs and that effort in Oakland yesterday was the best we could do then that would be something to get upset about. But I don't really think an NFL team can get pumped-up about a game at the end of the year when the biggest goal to winning is taking a better W-L percentage into the offseason ?
And its not like the Raiders aren't talented. Any team which has a backfield which includes Jamarcus Russel & Darren McFadden has excellent talent.

Rep.

Perhaps the boards should be locked to all you kool-aid drinkers who think Kubiak and Schaub walk on water ............ who excuse the poor coaching and poor play after each loss ........... who excuse the team's on-going "plan" for eternal mediocrity by only signing cast-off and over-the-hill free agents.

A No. 2 is suposed to step it up when the No. 1 gets taken away. Walters seems to be only successful when AJ is putting up massive yards next to him. Owens Daniels was the only guy that stood up yesterday.

So the defense reverts back to its garbage self.....& some take the time out to blame the Qb for not throwing it to AJ or our #2 WR who's been outstanding for us this year... I really question some of u guys' knowledge of the game sometimes.

During the game they showed a list of Pro bowl WR's that Nmandi has shut down over the season so why any of u expected AJ to put up his usual is beyond me. Nmandi is a stud...period.

Other than that, they looked like us last week & we came out flat off of our big win last week. should've been expected truthfully given the fact that they play our sister team the broncos twice every year.

Agreed. Walter has proven himself to be incredibly valuable...more productive than I ever imagined.

Yesterday was just a bad day all around...

I don't care how good the secondary is, you do not let them take away your passing game. Ashamasomthingoranother isn't God's gift to man. He isn't Deon, Rod Woodson and Champ Bailey rolled into one. You think the 49ers ever let Rice just disappear out of game? How many times did Irving become a cheerleader on the field? None - because their team got the ball in their hands someway or another.

Is Ashamasomthingoranother a stud? Yeah no one is doubting it.
Is AJ a stud? Absolutely.
Throw a deep ball and let AJ do what he does - fight for it. Who cares if it's incomplete or maybe even picked off deep.

Your comparisons aren't valid. Those teams had a defense to rely on & had all-time greats all up & down the roster & sidelines. They also had balance....all things we don't have.

& You say that, but if those passes are picked off, then everybody rips into schaub/kubes for trying to force it to AJ instead of going to someone else...which they tried to do numerous times. We run the same offense & have the same team dynamics as Denver & they beat them once this year too. You don't think that that had something to do with why our offense stalled alot?

Kubiak did mention he was not satisfied with practices all week. I think this one is more on the players. sorry :specnatz:

Which is a clear indicator that Kubiak doesn't know how to get this team consistently focused. He may have complained, but they clearly didn't listen or respond. You guys can keep bringing up SMith and Shanahan, but Kubiak is the head coach and he is the one that needs to go. At best the Texans will go 8-8 this year and it will be once again another season where they don't go over 500. There have been several teams now that have had winning seasons since Kubiak has been here and the same ole "Wait until next year" song remains intact. I've got no confidence in this guy's abilities to lead this team to a SB. He'll eventually get them to a first round playoff debut since Mcnair will give him an eternity to coach this team, but he doesn't have what it takes to be a great head coach in the NFL. He is a stop gap coach that is average at best.

if this isn't the nail in the coffin for richard smith's firing, i don't know what is. this indeed may have been a blessing in disguise.

Agreed. I just wish they'd use them more aggressively. More 3-WR and 4-WR sets. I think Andre Davis has pretty much gone to waste this season. JJ hasn't seen enough reps at WR for him to have developed AT ALL.

...sigh... such a waste

Your comparisons aren't valid. Those teams had a defense to rely on & had all-time greats all up & down the roster & sidelines. They also had balance....all things we don't have.

And we didn't have balance coming into this game? D was playing the best it EVER has. Slaton was setting the league on fire, AJ was unstoppable and both lines were knocking fools on their there rear. All of it disappears this week?

There is a difference between letting your guy make a play and being stupid. We all know Matt is going to through at least one pick again; most everyone would prefer that pick to come off a 50 yard bomb to AJ than the 3 yard MLB pick.

Saying Denver lost to them is a loser's mentality. The Browns beat the Giants earlier this year...AND?

Excellent point, rep following.

I haven't read the entire thread so apologies if this has been covered already, but to build on TF's post... any independent watcher of the Texans should conclude that this loss ought to confirm Richard Smith's departure. Here's the logic:

At the beginning of the season when we had something to play for we stuck with that pitiful prevent defense and it got us in a dreadful mess.

Once we'd screwed it up royally and had nothing to play for the DC took risks - played aggressively, got results and we looked like we had a serviceable D. In fact, we did so well that the improbable happened -we beat the titans meaning a winning season was possible. So we're back at stage one with something to play for (an historic first winning season).

So, what happens? What lessons are learned? None - it's back to the lame vanilla D. All we've got to do is prevent big plays and wait for Jamarcus Rusell to screw up, right? Wrong! We gave him the confidence he needed to put in a good performance and we got beaten. Bad.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over expecting different results.
