Encouraging Letters To Players

I know when things are 0-4, it's not looking so good.

But I think in some respects, this team at the present time is in a better situation than it was last year at the same time. They are relatively healthy and they have a Steve Slaton.

How about sending letters of support to the players? Or to Sage Rosenfels in particular? This is a young team and even if you want to get rid of everyone, most of these guys are going to be still around for a while. So we might as well give them as much as encouragement as we can.

It is also a good thing to do with your kids. A way of getting them writing and being supportive to people even when they make mistakes. Adversity building character and all that foof.

You've gotta be kidding. :spit:

I know I have been rough on Sage for the last couple of days but at least he showed heart. He is still a Texan and needs positive energy. I will be sending something soon.:texflag:

Why wouldn't you want Sage to be encouraged? How is that not a good thing for Texan fans?

I've even pondered starting him, but he shouldn't get babied verbally when he does boneheaded crap like Sunday. He can be encouraged when he earns it.

What he needs is a boatload of letters telling him that he'd be a starter if he wasn't so stupid on the field.

I'm fine with the encouragement for everybody else.

Deer Richard Smith,

Congratulations! You haven't sucked the last couple of games.

Dear Jacques Reeves,

Congratulations! You FINALLY learned to look for the ball late in this last game. Don't feel bad about that last TD. That was just a highlight reel catch by whatshisnumber.

I've got one that I'm about to print out to Mario... sent one to Kubes this time last week.

Dear Weaver

we love watching you on the sidelines. You should stay there more often. That is a really good place for you to be throughout the game on Sunday. I completely support you on the sidelines.
:texflag:

Dear Duane Brown,

Seth Wand told me it took a LT 5 years to become even adequate. What's your problem? Don't you know that? Show off rookies!

TC, I must respectively disagree with your suggestion of sending an encouraging letter to Sage Rosenfels. He does not need cuddling and comfort, he needs continued harsh criticism.

Dear Shaub

Sage really wants your job and many people think he is better. Show us that you are clearly the better guy for the job this week. We'll be rooting for you man.
:thisbig:

I have to agree with this - I didn't send a postcard to Sage - I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

I am all for this...the guys actually feel better when we support them. I will find some Kansas postcards to send them tomorrow!

Dear Mario,

You should sack and knock the crap out of Sage a few times in practice this week. I know Kubes will fine you for doing it, but it would be worth it.

Sincerely,

Well, obviously given the sarcastic letters listed in this thread, somebody shouldn't say anything that they don't mean.

Don't you think he is already ate up as it is? As mad as everyone here is about his actions, don't you think that he is even angrier at himself?

Dude plays 55 minutes of decent football, and then 5 minutes of being the worst object lesson of why you have to protect the freaking football.

Last Sunday's debacle might be his defining moment. He would have to have a great career for it not to be. I've always liked Sage, and it's a failure that will probably haunt the guy for a long time. I really hope that people don't send hate mail to him. He's still our backup QB, so just think of the team's best interest in not breaking him completely.

Rep you if I could, but must spread first.

I blame Sage 100% for the loss, and have said so in other posts. However, if you're interested in what's best for the Texans, I don't think it's berating, humiliating or "harshly criticizing" Sage for errors that he's already more than painfully aware of. If you just want your pee pee to stop hurting because your football team lost a game that was in the bag, well, I don't think anything they could do or say to Sage is going to help that either.

Oh dear, I certainly hope he doesn't get hate mail. Although, he should be glad he doesn't play in a less kinder, less classier place than Houston where his house would probably be surrounded by crazed fans.

Yup, even if he wins a Super Bowl, this game will still be in the highlight reels following him relentlessly as only the media can do. Sad, actually.

I realize he is probably more angry with himself than any of us are, and I don't want to overdo the humiliation, like DB is warning us not to. However, we have a guy here who's made a career of taking stupid risks on the field. He needs to be embarrassed enough to remember this when he gets that unwise, unopportune urge to be a hero.

I say this because I really am serious about what this guy could do if he only took his brain out onto the field with him. It's a shame what this guy could have done for his career and for the Texans if he had shown the wisdom to not make so many turnovers and taken David Carr's job a few years back, like say in the middle of that 2-14 season.

You can project that he wanted to be a hero. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't.

I know in my own minor sports history, once in a while I tried to do things in an instant that were outside my ability. And you didn't know it while it was happening, but only after you did something and well, it ended stupidly. It happens sometimes with competitive people. Some of those people are not gifted (me) and some of those people are insanely gifted (Brett Favre, for instance).

And sometimes you are so in a zone, you feel like you are invincable. I once played a golf game where I couldn't miss a shot. I hit an approach shot through a small opening in some trees and hit the pin. One of the people I was playing with asked if I had played in college. Really hard course, but I couldn't miss anything. It was weird. Until I got to the last hole, and got a triple bogey.

Being in a zone you are just doing and not so much thinking of doing. You just know what you are supposed to do. But the scaring thing about the zone is that you usually have no notice when that zone is going to go away. It just happens. And when you fall out of it abruptly, you have to make sure you don't lose your head.

Anyway, I have tons of empathy for the guy. Yeah, he is a professional, and he should be able to deal with the pressure and what his responsibilities are for protecting the ball. But it truly was a pretty great performance for most the game considering that he didn't get first team snaps during the week.

Rosenfels didn't become a Texan until Kubiak came on board after the 2-14 season. It is my belief that Rosenfels would have become the starter in 2006 had he not broke his hand in the most flukey special team injury of all time. (Another try hard moment that went painfully wrong for him).

The Texans couldn't just rely on Rosenfels in 2007 because 1. he was coming off a hand injury; 2. he hadn't shown a ton of good stuff; 3. concerns with being a turnover machine in his limited playing time.

Really, it must drive him a little nuts.

One thing I will say is that I don't believe he should be ridiculed for this for years to come. I just think that he has a really hard time kno
wing when to calm down, much like what you are talking about. Sometimes tough love is the best medicine.

I started a thread asking if we should actually start this guy yesterday, but I asked it under the assumption that he would be told, "Don't screw it up!"

Thanx for clarifying about his tenure here. I was under the impression he had been with us longer than that.

I gotta say that this type of attitude is a big part of this mess. If this game was an isolated incident or the team just couldn't get over the hump (i.e., the Oilers losing to the Steelers in the AFC Championship game 2 years in a row), then I would all on board for this.

Bottom line is, for a multitude of reasons, some being just bad luck, THE TEXANS ORGANIZATION IS A BUNCH OF LOSERS WHEN IT COMES TO THE W COLUMN! IMO, until the Texans players really embrace and understand that, I don't think this is going to change anytime soon.

Maybe it's just me and how I deal with things (meaning buckle up your chin strap, stop the crying and saying your working all hours of the night). These players are grown men - regardless of Kubiak's comments that they are kids - that make a lot of money playing a VIOLENT game that a lot of guys dream of doing.

TC, I understand what you want to do and foster, but certain things, at certain times, are not the right thing to do. At this time, I don't think this is the right thing to do.

I can certainly see and understand your point of view.

I look at this team as if they were my family in general or my kids specifically. If Sage were my kid - after I jumped all over him like a duck on a june bug - I certainly wouldn't abandon him. Now, I'm not sending Sage anything - but I really think that if we could mount some kind of Go Texan post card blitz, it might help Kubiak get these incredibly wealthy "kids"-for kids they are no matter what their profession or income- to be as intense for the Dophin game as they were for the Colts.

I don't know if it is right or wrong - but I think it is necessary.. for this team to know that there are folks out there who still support them, still like them, still think they can win a few games and the season isn't lost - whether it is or isn't, you do or don't, doesn't really matter right now. What matters is that we don't lose any more games for awhile. If sending a few post cards can help - I'm all for it. If it doesn't - well, we tried and I'll even say, "You were right, HT."

If someone could please send a note to Bryan Pittman on my behalf, I'd appreciate it.

Yeah what's his deal lately? He used to be automatic and now he can't get a snap right!

I was watching him practicing on the sidelines WHILE THE GAME WAS GOING ON working with Turk, and he snapped one right over Turk's head! Turk's reaction was kinda funny, he just sorta stared at Pittman like WTF?

It's like he has the shanks or something...

At the end of the day the players are still people. Even though they make a lot of money playing a game many dream of playing, they are still humans.

I don't see anything wrong with sending a few words of encouragement someones way after they have failed...

At the end of the day it's just a game...a game that often affects players physically and emotionally well after they are done playing...

I know that if I were a player I'd like to look back at positive letters I had gotten when I was done playing.

Whether or not this is the right thing to do as far as reinforcing their on-field performance is debatable. But I don't see how you can argue that this isn't a good thing as far as real life is concerned.

It's a bad spell. He's usually the NFL's best

I am really referring to season tickets holders that have a financial interest on the product displayed on the field.

It amazes me how there are places in our economy we can continue throw good money after bad, forgive any bad results, while hanging other people out to dry.

Like I said, these are all grown men that make a lot money. The last thing they should need, much less expect, is a pat on the back or a pick me up in situations such as this.

To demonstrate what I mean, do you remember the tough love Apollo Creed showed to Rocky in "Rocky III"? His point was, THERE IS NO TOMORROW, THERE IS NO TOMORROW, THERE IS NO TOMORROW!!!!

I have an idea... why not have the Texans players and coaches write cards to the fans, apologizing for putting 7 years of crap on the field?

Sorry, but their hefty paycheck after each game should be encouraging enough.

I've been a season ticket holder for all 7 seasons. I feel that I got good entertainment value for my money every season but 2005. That season I booed and stopped attending because it was a dispicable lack of effort and poor product.

I can't really complain about the game I attended on Sunday not being worth $35.. It was a great game. The Texans gave great effort.

Nobody is suggesting that the team won't try if you don't send them a letter. Some of us want to continue to be a part of a community of fans and the team. That community element has been lost in modern sports but still is somewhat present in the NFL. Myself, Texan Chick, and others want to build relationships with the team and the players. For those of you who prefer to be bitter about how much money they make and yell at them everytime something doesn't go their way, just ignore TC's suggestion. For me, cynicism is too present in the world already. I don't want to spend my time, particularly my free time, adding to the cynicism. I'm more interested in hope, kindness, faith, joy, excitement, appreciation, respect, etc...

For a fan to quit going because the team is losing makes said fan a fairweather fan.

I have attended every home game and the superbowl in reliant stadium. I have never left the feild untill the last player walks off the feild. I stand and yell keep your heads up, we will get them next week. I do not think I am very good at writing letters but I did go on 610 with Eric Winston and told him to tell Sage to pick his head up, we got a redhot team coming in here and we need to put a cork in the dolphins blow hole.

It is a game, A football game and we win some but we lose more right now.
Suck it up Houston, We got an NFL team and we should be grateful.

How are you connecting dots that because I don't want to send letters to the Houston Texans makes me bitter? How are you connecting that I yell at them because I don't send them letters? How does my post ignore TC's suggestion? Actually, I don't think I ignored it, I responded to it.

Do want you want, it really doesn't matter to me. I was just throwing my idea in the ring. You seem a little too sensitive to me.

I will point out, IMO, that you guys sending these letters is more about you guys feeling better about yourself than really helping these players. The last sentence in your post makes that very clear.

My suggestion to you, don't make too many assumptions about someone just because they don't agree with you. By the way, that should make you a lot happier considering the last sentence in your post. Is it unreasonable for you to afford the same care and kindness to a fellow fan as you do the Texans players? Practice what you preach?

Not too much hope and kindness was extended to me in your post.

I'm not sure why you respond as if I've made a personal attack. My only assumption is that some fans are cynical. Well, not really an assumption since I've dealt with them all my life.

And you certainly called me out... I do things for others because it reflects on me, including my own assessment of myself. Guilty of that. I'm not sure the ratio but I will acknowledge that I'm not Jesus so I do fall into that trap.

I'm not sure where you get that I'm sensitive. That's something that I'm not often accused of.

Just responding to the words as I read them on my screen.

Message boards are great for providing different perspectives but it really doesn't provide anything regards to the poster. Meaning, if you met the poster, probably what you imagined the person would be, would be very different.

My point was really to provide a different perspective to what you posted in a very direct manner.

This might come as a suprise but I guess I went from an Texans Untimate Fan to a Fairweather Fan. I sold the rest of my season tickets and parking pass. Yes it's for their poor play and for other financial reasons. My family has priority.
