Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

What makes Zach Wilson this hot commodity and future NFL gem? It seems like some key points applied in previous QB evals on here are being overlooked: consistent winner, performance in big games, level of competition, progression year to year, elevate those around him, offense played in, etc. Personally, I don't think 2020 is a very good measuring tool especially with the constraints of the pandemic on college football. No one has a crystal ball and I'm not saying he won't be good, I'm just curious. Let's just imagine that the Jets took him at 1.2, why would the outcome be any different than Sam Darnold?

Different strokes for different folks.

I bet Caserio will be looking for traits Tom Brady had, opposed to traits Pat Mahomes has.

Neither way is right, on its own, imo. Just have to have an organization that can maximize on those traits.

On 610 today it was mentioned again that Caserio when he was with New England had research Tua tagovailoa extensively knowing that the Patriots would need a quarterback. If DeShaun is traded Caserio"s opinion of Tua will shape that trade. I have also seen in the last couple weeks that Nick loves Tua FWIW.

You spot at BDubs drooling over Tua highlights?
Nah, the son of the manager of the Seabrook DQ informed that his second cousin's boyfriends ex stepmother heard it on the Grapevine.

Nicky was allegedly singing Soto voice "Tua would you be mine?"

But you know TK , believe half of what you see and nothing of what you hear.

Dang, I almost broke into a Temptations routine.

I like Zach Wilson as a prospect, but I just don’t see a whole lot from him that unequivocally sets him apart as the 2nd best qb in this draft much less worth the 2nd or 3rd overall pick. Competition he played against was suspect and he’s smallish. There’s at least 2 other guys that I think can turn out to be as good and at least 1 of them NOONE is talking about and that’s Kyle Trask. To me he’s a cross between Matt Ryan and Phillip Rivers.

The kid is deadly accurate and I think the talk of his arm strength being below average is way overblown. But even if it is a little below average, it’s not like that can’t be improved with an NFL offseason. He’ll be a steal for any team that picks him up after the top 2-3 guys scouts deem are better than him are selected.

Also this year’s overrated qb award goes to Trey Lance. I don’t see it at all with him..at least not with the tape that’s out there on him.

Yep, people are sleeping on Trask.

How do ypu compare Trask's footwork/movement skills within the pocket with Mac Jones skills in these departments? I consider Mac to have the best skils in manipulating the pocket to be the best in this yrs draft.

I imagine that Caserio thinks the Pats made Tom Brady.

My biggest concern with Mac is after watching 5 game videos you see that in the Alabama offense every throw Mac makes is predetermined before the snap is made.

Not that it really matters who he throws it to as he just has his pick of which fighter jet is flying by the 737 'covering' it..

Between the concepts and the talent the QB is basically playing madden on easy..

mac Jones imo is the better of the 2 just by virtue of being smaller and more nimble and overall a little bit better athlete...but it’s not by a lot. As a player, his comp to me on the high side is Brees just a bit taller on the low side I’ll go old school and say a Phil Simms with a little better arm. A guy that’s not exceptional at any 1 thing, but solid to good at everything and in the right system & situation could really excel in the league.

He’s also getting overlooked b/c like all other Bama qbs before Tua, folks aren’t sure what to make of him b/c of all the talent he had around him, but I think he can be a solid to very good qb in the league if he reaches his potential.

The thing that people overlook about nick Saban coached players coming out of Bama these days is that these guys are amongst the most mentally prepared players you’re going to find. He coaches them hard and the competition you have to face year in year out on your own team and in the SEC is 2nd to none.

you can say that about almost every qb coming tho...especially the guy who this thread is on. rarely seen him make tight window throws and he was also rarely under pressure. Aside from that, all these guys put up numbers in largely wide open systems these days. Jones shouldn’t be penalized anymore than these other guys for having a great set up.

Have to disagree. I may have been one of the first to get on board with Trask, about a month ago. Someone posted passing statistics a couple of days ago. Wilson pretty much was number one in most categories; but Trask was right up there not too far behind.

You must think Jones has an outstanding arm. Simms sported a rocket arm, one of the top 5 in the league during his heyday.

Some guys on the chiefs board that I visit from time to time call zw the Morman Mahomes, fwiw.

The QBs from this draft are out of reach for the Texans. Maybe someone should start a 2022 QB draft thread?

Mond only played 10 games in 2020 which included their victory over North Carolina in the Orange Bowl. Had he got those games against North Texas, Colorado, and Fresno State in the books.....he was on pace to have a really special 2020 season not to mention a probable 12-1 season.

Sorry, I do not believe Mond will make it in the NFL. If A&M had a better QB they had a legitimate shot at a national title.

Well, March 30 will be Mond's opportunity to shine and either he bumps his stock or he remains a RD4 or later developmental QB. I'm looking forward to see how he does.

I do not believe there is an outcome yet in regards to Sam Darnold. I think it is too soon to write Sam Darnold off. Perhaps I am wrong but I think it would be unfair to write him off just yet. I would like to see him get a fair chance through competition. Most likely if he does not do well, his chances to start will be much harder and he will be relegated to back up duties throughout his career. Of coarse some Qb's like Ryan Tannehill do better when they are moved to new teams. Then again Sam Darnold may not be on a new team this season. If he remains a Jet he will have a new coaching staff and that is almost like being on a new team. I hate to see a kid who is seen to have a lot of promise fail to live up to it!

I watched his pro day twice today. He's got a lot of natural talent, but he was off the mark often today. He may have be pressing .... he only had this year as a body of work to consider .... I know if I were he, I would be trying too hard. I believe a good QB Whisperer could mold him into an All Pro .... boy can "flick" it better than anyone I've ever seen !

I would have advised Zach Wilson not to do a Pro day.

I originally thought Zach Wilson was a RD4 or later QB with lots of upside. At that time, I could've never imagined the jump his stock took and the rate of speed in which it jumped.

It would be tough to see the Jets roll their #2 pick on him. I think Darnold could be salvaged if they would finally build an offense around him.

The GM and HC weren't with the team when Darnold was drafted. He's not their guy. They'll want to win or lose with their own guy.
That may be the case, but if I were the Jets, I’d roll with Darnold a little while longer. Personally I like Darnold’s skill set, even though I didn’t draft him & im not at all sold on Wilson.

But the "Jets" in this instance are two guys that don't want to tie their careers to the previous administration's decision. So they'll ride with their own decision. Just how it works.

We know how hard up FO & fans are for a star qb. I think they're holding #2 in the hopes someone will offer their 1st born to move up and take him...Perhaps Chicago is that team if the package they offered SEA for Wilson is rumored to be true...they might be amenable to offer something similar to move up and take Wilson. If not, i think they go ahead and take Wilson. The plan will be to roll with Darnold...but on a short leash.

I'm sitting here watching Bama Pro Day. I'm going to say it now, Mac Jones could very well turn out to be the best QB in the 2021 class. I love his arm. I now see why 49ers gave up so much to move up to #3. Makes sense now. I see shades of Tom Brady in Mac Jones today.

Sounds like a decision the two guys running the Jets might make.

I thought he moved around in the pocket very Brady like in the NC game and delivered the ball accurately and on time. He even run the ball a little before getting his leg dinged up on one of the runs for a 1st down. Everybody keeps talking about Feilds playing hurt in that game, but Jones played hurt in that game and finished the game.

Zach Wilson has a better appreciation for massage therapist this year than he he did last year.
