Your thoughts on the 2008 NFL Draft

Ole Miss Texan

Hall of Fame
So what's everyone's thoughts on this upcoming draft and it's prospects? Favorite or least favorite prospect, most intruiging prospect, Can't-miss-gonna be a bust- Prospect, etc. Let's keep it fun and interesting!

I'll start...

1. The draft is too far away
2. Day 1 is only 2 rounds! blaaah
3. I think Calais Campbell and Kenny Phillips are the two most over-rated prospects that they are actually under-rated at this point.
4. I always like a good trade down- especially this year
5. At this point, I don't know what to expect and will genuinely be interested in whatever happens with our picks. I don't think I'll be upset with whoever we pick but will just be hanging on the the edge of my seat not knowing what we're going to do. This will be a lot of fun- it could go any way.

That's a good point.

A draft can be influenced by the previous season, or the teams that were successful. The Giants win the Super Bowl with a excellent d-line, so look for defensive linemen to be pushed up the board. Returners were huge in '07, and prospects with return ability should see their stock rise. 10 teams currently employ the 3-4 defense, and DE/OLB tweeners will become more desirable.

I like the fact that there are a lot of big play RBs in this draft. Most are the smaller, change-of-pace type backs. But, there's a place in the NFL for them.

I don't like the QBs in this draft. A lot of system QBs and long term projects. I didn't see very good QB play during the college season, and it shows in this draft.

this is the best quality draft that ive followed (which is only 3 yrs admittedly)

heres the list of guys id like the texans to take @ #18 in order:

1- leodis mcKelvin
2- cromartie
3- calais campbell
4- anthony collins
5- kenny phillips
6- mike jenkins
7- mendenhall/stewart

I don't feel this draft is as good as last year (07) & surely not as good as 06.

Texans 1st rd. pick should be a cb.

strength is in the 2nd rd. (Texans don't have a pick).

Texans will need some luck & good scouting to aquire immediate help with their 3rd & 4th rd. picks LT/RB.

5th/6th/7th bpa

The Miami players mentioned are premier talent, physically better than any other players @ their positions.

favorite player Jonathan Stewart

most intriguing prospect Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie

can't miss Secdric Ellis

player I'd most like the Texans to draft Leodis McKelvin

I'd like to trade down if we could get an extra second or third, but I don't expect that to happen. Probably I would go with db one and OL 3. Maybe Talib, Phillips or Porter.

the draft is what seperates the hardcore fans from the casual fans
waking up at 4 in the morning so I can watch it live on nfl.com make me hardcore? :doot:

On the draft, i really want Mendenhall, and just finished watching the Senior Bowl, and like everyone else was impressed with Cromartie - I like the way this guy tackles.

My thoughts on this Draft...

It's a strong Draft for CB's and OT's, but with the OT's you will get more value picking in the late 1st to 3rd rounds. There is no Thomas in this years Draft (NFL ready), but alot of good OT's that can be developed into solid players.

I would like the Texans to trade down to get more picks, but, if any of these are on the board, McKelvin, Cromartie, Stewart, or Mendenhall, take one! I just think any of these players would be too good to pass up at #18. It would be really tough if more than one of them were there at #18!

I wasn't as sold on this years crop of RB's as most everyone else seems to be. I think alot of them are too small (weight wise) for the pounding in the NFL. That's why I say we get Stewart or Mendenhall at #18 if they are still there. Forte or Boyd might be good picks in the 3rd or 4th.

Where and who we pick, as far as OT's and RB's, will depend on what Gibbs thinks he can do with the talent we already have and who we might get in FA. I know he likes to get OLinemen in the later rounds. Is the 3rd round too early? Will he want a Stewart or Mendenhall in the 1st, or just wait and pick up someone like Forte or Boyd later?

For the Texans in this Draft it seems like it's wide open. I have some ideas what they might do, but I don't have a clue which way they will actually go when the time comes to make that 1st pick. Should be interesting and alot of fun! :doot: JMHO!

I think it's a very rich draft for recievers. there are not any Calvin Johnson type prospects...but there are plenty of hands , WCO and tatar tot guys.

I think the Corners are all hit and miss. Guys like Bowman and Godfrey showed enough in their bowl games the scouts will give them a sniff. Those two guys are big Cbs who can play cover two. The Texans go Rb first...they may make into the third and fourth rounds.

My dark horse as I have posted many times is Oneil Cousins. ( I read this week end that he has 31" arms....that there thingy will make his living in the NFL on the inside). Hello King Dunlap.

I think there will be a lot of action in this draft. Two teams, Denver and Baltimore have critical needs at OLT and there aren't enough to go around. As many as ten teams could pass the RB/Wrs by opening day and bang those holes along the o-line.
Mocker the other day had eight go in the first two rounds....Just looking at the FAs available....that number could go up. After Flozell Adams there is a marked drop off in tallent of offensive tackles availble in free agency.

http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/features/teamneeds.html

The big question is will Faneca get an eighty million dollar deal? If he does....your beer prices just went up. The sixty million dollar gaurd is no longer an oddity...it's a reality. If the trend holds true...Samuels should command sixty to seventy million.

I think Mcfaddin is the class of the draft. My golden rule, don't over pay for RBs, goes out the window with him. He'll be worth the move up.

If Miami tries holding someone up for the #1....they will be in the same poition as the Texan's were in '06. Too many good players at the top to make the 3000 point deal.
Then there is St. Louiis. A team Rebuilding and needing multipul picks big time.
And the things they need are at the bottom of the first. Two to four good players for the price of one stud ?

St.Louis is the fulcrum....In that division, four quality players could catipult them to the top.

If Chirss Long falls past the first two picks...Oakland will move up.

.

I don't feel this draft is as good as last year (07) & surely not as good as 06. I regress. I feel this draft is quite good, and better than last years.

Texans 1st rd. pick should be a cb. yes, even if we address CB through FA, I still think we need a CB

strength is in the 2nd rd. (Texans don't have a pick). sad but true

The Miami players mentioned are premier talent, physically better than any other players @ their positions.I guarentee that Phillips and Campbell will be better pros than the others at their position. Phillips is clearly the class of S's. Campbell will move up the boards.

favorite player Jonathan Stewart this is where we hardcore disagree. I really don't like Stewart. I do not see him being anything in the NFL.

most intriguing prospect Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie Yes. I actually wouldn't mind drafting him.

can't miss Secdric Ellis scary good. Better than Dorsey who I don't like.

player I'd most like the Texans to draft Leodis McKelvin no thanks. I'm not as big on him as everyone else. I don't think he is as good as everyone makes him out to be, and I highly doubt that 90% of people have actually seen his tapes.

baltimore have jared gaither
denver has #11 pick and will pick a good one.. and this is a pretty good ot but the G's and C's seem to be so-so

We need to stay away from the small school prospects if we stay in teh 1st Round. McKelvin and Jenkins are both good prospects but I would rather go with players that have competed against top competition. Call me crazy, but I would rather have Cason than either of those guys. McKelvin did nothing to wow me and Jenkins is ok, but not 1st Round material imho.

That being said, I think they will all go in the 1st Round because its a pretty weak year for DB and you better get while the getting is good.

Personally, I would rather have Phillips or even Connor than any of the DB prospects out there...and I definitely don't want to draft RB in the 1st. There is value later in the draft at RB....unlike most other positions.

If we trade down to the 2nd Round, it would be nice to pick Tony Hills and/or Jamaal Charles in that round....but would then be forced to get some help at DB through FA.

I will be happy with whoever they pick as long as its not McKelvin, Jenkins or Clady the OT out of Boise State. Those guys have 'whiff' written all over them. We should have already learned our lesson about drafting guys from 2nd and 3rd tier schools in the 1st Round

I don't like Phillips & Rivers
Phillips is living off Taylor & Reed's REP
Rivers reminds me of Chris Claiborne Good but not a special LB
How did miami's defense give up so many points with Campbell, Gooden, & Phillips on it?

Players I like are Cromartie, Forte, C. Williams & Thomas Brown
Cromartie Fast playmaker, good size, can play FS or CB
Forte Hard nosed RB, deceptive speed, one cut & go RB, good hands
C. Williams Smart LT great feet 2 time all SEC gave up 1 sack in jr. & sr. year
Thomas Brown Fast, hits the hole quick, good hands, runs hard, Dick Vermiel liked him alot, (Faulk, Holmes) played in SEC, Down side injury prone. Late round steal

McKelvin, "I'm not as big on him as everyone else. I don't think he is as good as everyone makes him out to be, and I highly doubt that 90% of people have actually seen his tapes".

I don't see Stewart being able to break any long runs. I don't view him as a HR threat. I know he has deceptive speed and could touch 4.4, but he doesn't run like that on the field. He is an inside runner. We have too many of those as it is, but I really don't think he is going to be that good at running inside in the NFL. Call it a gut feeling, but I've been calling this all year long and he has done nothing to change it, even the bowl game.

McKelvin is a good prospect. He is not at the level Daunta was coming out, and he is not that good. I honestly don't think Daunta is that good of an actual CB. I think he is great in run support, but, IMO, he really struggles with cushions and has just shown to me to be nothing more than a #2 CB in the NFL. McKelvin presents solid value because of his dual deminison at PR, but not solid value for the first round. He isn't a player I see being able to start day 1, and honestly, he is only riding a lot of hype right now. He played at Troy. Freaking Troy. With the possible exception of the Oklahoma State game early in the season, who has actually watched tape of him besides those of us who are dedicated to the draft. One or two people mention a name because he has done something well at an event, and everyone else just runs with that notion. I would put his PR skills slightly below Jones'. I compare him to a lesser developed physically and mentally Revis. Revis graded out higher. Similar playing styles, but difference in actual value. Revis was my choice last year actually, but I would be angry if we took McKelvin. I would actually be ok with Cromartie. Yes, it sounds hypocritical, but Cromartie has measurables off the charts while playing above everyone at any competition level. I'm not saying he is starter ready now, but I would take Cromartie before McKelvin. I grade McKelvin out to a mid-second rounder.

Phillips and the entire Miami team under-performed, but then you can equate that to our defense. How was our defense only what it was with a pro-bowl MLB, and 2 alternates. A defense isn't made up of only 2 or 3 players. That isn't fair to expect.

I think that Stewart will be an awesome RB just because he can do it all. Yes, he's an inside runner, but he also has the speed to take it to the outside, the elusiveness to avoid tackles, yet the power to get that extra yard or two.

And frankly, I don't know what the hype is with all these "home run" threats, just look how the ULTIMATE home run threat Reggie Bush turned out so far.

i don't know anything about McKelvin, i just know that every draft friend i speak to speaks wonders about him. 'nuff said.

I see Stewart being closer to a mix of Dayne and Dom Davis than a Campbell clone. I know Stewart has good speed for his size, but he doesn't have the quickness to get outside. He has good enough straight line speed, but I just have this gut feeling that he is going to disappoint whatever team drafts him.

I tend to agree with you re: Stewart. I see him as being somewhat of a Ron Dayne, Jr. We definitely do not need another RD. Of course, I admit that I could be wrong, but I hope we do not go that route. I would much rather have Mendenhall over Stewart, though I think we should go CB or maybe LT (Chris Williams only!) with our first pick.

We posted almost the exact same thing at the exact same time re: Stewart. Very interesting!

thanks for your response.

Stewart is my favorite player in the draft because he's coming out of Oregon. just like your favorite player maybe Talib cause he's from Kansas. both awesome football players too, widely regarded as tops in their class @ their positions. However certainly not top 10 material, maybe top 20 & while I would not mind either player being drafted by the Texans (would actually give the nod to Talib because he could be an excellent, physical cover 2 cb which should fit Richard Smiths tweeked by Rhodes soft zone defense) but I'm more intersted in a press cover or franchise LT (like Collins, Kansas if we trade down).

Which leads me to Leodis McKelvin who is along with Mike Jenkins the best cover corner in this draft. Does not really matter the level of compeition faced in College its purely player specific, specificly the skill sets they represent, how they move in space & match up on the field next to one another, which you get real up close & personel look at in private workouts that each team hosts. the skill he represents so very well for his position is the backpeddle, this allows him to isolate in space & position his body where he has visual contact with his man & the QB. essential skill to survive in the NFL on an island ability to read & react. it doesn't hurt he likes to bang heads, plays a physical style (like Dunta) & is sound fundamentally. I beleive he grades out in the top 15, maybe top 10.

so we agree to disagree, no big deal thats what makes draft boards so different :)

i don't know anything about McKelvin, i just know that every draft friend i speak to speaks wonders about him. 'nuff said.

Well I'm no corner expert for sure. Quickest guy I've seen come down the pike in quite awhile. I think it's the feet. Guy moves his feet like he was Mercury. quickest break out of the pedel since..... ?

Phillips was a star sophomore, but failed to live up to expectations this season and was arguably hampered by a young and battered Hurricanes’ secondary. DeCoud flashes knockout power, but seems to whiff on as many tackles as he makes.

Jerry Rice!

He played at Troy. Freaking Troy. With the possible exception of the Oklahoma State game early in the season, who has actually watched tape of him besides those of us who are dedicated to the draft.

I guess you should call DeMarcus Ware & Osi "6 sacks in a game" Umenyiora so you can tell them that they were overrated coming out of college since they played at Troy.

My thoughts. We don't have the luxury of BPA. I've never agreed with that draft stance unless you've got good enough depth and talent on your team. The Texans aren't there yet.

What we should do is look at several need positions and then take who projects the best for what we're trying to do offensively of defensively.I think most of us agree at this point it's between LT and CB. You could make a fair argument for RB.

The giants put out late round guys and still managed a good run game this year. Continuity behind a solid oline should be considered on why they managed to do this. Also curious as to why some people think IF we go LT in the first we wouldn't start him immediately. They were ready to parade a 3rd rounder out of the gates two years ago almost now so I don't think there'd be any fear of doing that again if he's got the skill set.I'd also like to point out how the past two guys to break the 2000 yard mark weren't exactly game breakers with their speed. Also if you can't pick up the blitz as a RB don't expect to get drafted in the first on this team. Home run speed is nice to have but having vision and the ability to break the first tackle is vastly more important IMO.

Cason reminds me of Leon Hall guy is going to get picked apart by draftniks but pro teams know better. He'll be a first rounder. Cromartie is a physical freak and has tons of upside. Sounds familiar as to why someone got drafted last year.

Just Saying.

I wasn't bashing Troy. The only schools I will ever bash are Mizzu and K-State. I was simply saying that Troy is not a school that gets ESPN time, and therefore, very few on this board have actually gotten a chance to review his game film.

I agree with your post. Especially 2nd & 3rd paragraphs. It is good that Gibbs likes O line picked in later rounds and will develop them. Question is can we wait? I'm ok with Salaam but want hime to get some plays off. Stewart 5'11" 235 lbs and 4.48, whooee that is hauling a load quickly. He is my dream player that could be there. If we do not get a CB in FA, I think a corner becomes priority #1. Then, we got Bennett in 4th, maybe lightning will strike twice? If we could select Stewart in first, a solid LT in 3rd and a CB in 4th? Just do not see Texans allowing Bennett and a draft pick be starters.

You're right.

Fact is, most people have never seen him play and are just basing their opinions on what others have said about him.
