Even though guys like Steve Smith are killing folks, almost every team in the finals has a great or very solid defense.

While I love VY for his talent, charisma and Texas roots; I also like RB's explosiveness and versatility, but darn it, wouldn't it be nice to have a Greg Bingham like presence on the field--an AJ Hawk or maybe a devastating pass rusher like Mario Williams and extra picks?

I mean our offensive has potential. We definitely need a couple of more OL and a all-around TE, but with say three solid folks we could be very competitive offensively.

What superstar potential do we have on defense? Dunta and ??? Ok, so back to the point maybe we need to focus on defensive talent in the draft and FA. Yes, we could still draft VY or RB and then focus on defense and maybe we try and address a bit of each. I'd truly would love to pry Hutchinson from SEA, but maybe we can pick up some talented OL in 3-4 rds...other teams do.

I love VY and wouldn't mind RB, but reality is telling me I need to be more open minded...its just not as fun though!
 
Its just easier to project offensive players as oppossed to defensive players at this point because the direction of the coaching (Gary Kubiak) and lack of success our starters (David Carr being the most visable) over the first four years. We all presumed the Texans where drafting & projecting players who fit best to play in the 3-4 so what direction do they take now? continue with a different version of the 3-4, the same version or a completly new scheme like a 4-3? this is why at this point at least to me it makes it very hard to imagine going defense with the Texans first, even second draft pick not to mention what happens in free agency :spy:

I have heard that too, although he is being considered for a couple head coaching jobs so I"m sure he'd take any of those over our defensive coordinator spot. I wouldn't have a problem with him coming here, almost anyone would be better than Fangio and the Buccaneers have had solid defenses for several years and the highlight of their defense is usually their DL, however I hope he doesn't try to run a cover 2 defense like the Bucs do. They have had a phenomenal DL for years that can put pressure on the QB while the other seven guys drop into coverage, but at this moment we don't have that caliber of players on our team that we can form into a similar dominating 4-3 DL, so we'd need to bring in a couple players on the DL if we're going to switch to a 4-3, especially one based on a cover 2 defense.

Cover 2 defenses can be run effectively (Tampa Bay has used one for a while and has won a Super Bowl with it and the Colts generally run it with varying success, at the same time the Rams run it and generally their defense gets killed) but it heavily depends on the pressure your front 4 guys can get on the opposing QB. If those four can get a lot of pressure on their own and allow your LBs and DBs to drop back into coverage, then you can have success at it, and you can still throw in some blitzes and everything else in there too. However if your front four can't get pressure, the opposing QB will have all day to find holes in your zone on passing plays and move the all at will. In the case of Fangio's defense, he basically tried to run a cover 2 out of a 3-4 for most of the last few years, and the DL in a 3-4 defense is not meant to create pressure on QBs, it's mainly meant to stop the run and occupy blockers to allow blitzing LBs to come thru and get at the QB (like Pittsburgh and New England do quite effectively) and is usually much harder for a QB to tell where the blitzing pressure is going to come from. 3-4 defenses are also generally much better at stopping outside running plays while a 4-3 would generally be better at stopping runs up the middle, although that all depends on your personnel and playcalling.
 
I want to see how some of our existing players translate into the 4-3 before we start making assumptions on what all we need. We might discover that several of our players play significantly better or worse in their new positions and with the new scheme. I almost hope the coaches error on the side of caution (with respect to getting rid of potential talent) before just discarding everyone. Sure guys like Bradford and Coleman are "no brainers", but we might have a guy that has been in the wrong situation with the wrong coach that we cut prematurely (see previous examples of this like Foley and McCree).

They won't have much time before the draft to be able to evaluate our guys in a different defensive system that what we've been running. I think a lot of them may end up playing better, although we don't have a true MLB other than Polk and we would almost for sure need another DE, and we definitely need a CB/S, so we could look for a DE in the draft (maybe Mario Williams in the 1st round after trading down) and a DB, but other than that I agree with you that I think they will look to fix up the offense the rest of the way since we are resigning Carr to his extension, we're bringing in Kubiak and his offensive-minded brain, and it will be easier to evaluate our current offensive talent on tape than it would be to watch our defense in a 3-4 and try to figure out which of those guys would translate well to a 4-3. I think they will mainly be looking to fix the offense and give Kubiak and Carr the tools they need to succeed on that side of the ball and add a minimal number of defensive players and see how our current guys can handle the switch to a 4-3 defense for a year, and by doing that at least by the end of next year we should have one of the better offenses in the league and have a good idea of what defensive personnel changes we need to make to fix that up too.

heh, the Tampa D seems to do Okay with Cover2. Don't forget that Dallas also had a LOT of success running Cover 2 with inferior defensive talent.

I don't believe that any one specific defense is the answer. I think flexibility is the answer - See Bill Billichick......

4-3, 3-4, 2-5-4.....and god knows what other monstrocities he has dreamed up to fit various scenarios.
