Would you do this "what if"?

The higher round one drafts in, the better chance of success and Texans have not done overwhelmingly well in 2-4th rounds. As last year, there seems to be good players in top 32 spots and in positions we need. Here is scenario:

Texans draft #15 and QBs Mariota, Winston and Cook are gone but Hundley and Bryce Petty are available. All college players continue on pace they are now and we assume no serious injuries occur.

I suggest we trade down in first to pick up additional picks; then trade back into late first with our own 2, 3 and 4 and then again with picks from trade down. Hoped for results would be three picks in last ten or so of first round.

Or would you keep the #15 and go for one of the QBs available or someone else? Players that could be there at #15 CB Trae Waynes, OT Andrus Peat, OT Brandon Scherff, OLB Veasley, WR Jaelen Strong, WR/TE Fuchness and WR Kevin White.

I would just go with Peat, if he is gone Scherff. Keep building up the OL. XFL will hopefully be comfortable and improved in the system, Duane is still in his prime and Newton is having a great improved year.

If they don't trade up for one of the top QB prospects then that tells me they are rolling with Savage so we aren't seeing a QB in any of the top rounds if any.
 
I would try to trade away the first round pick for future consideration before thinking about anything else.

There are UFAs out there that are better than Fitzpatrick like Palmer, Flynn, Hoyer.
Heck, even old Matt Hasselbeck is better than Fitz, especially now that he has had two years on the bench (no wear and tear).
He can help the guys prepared for the Colts, too.
 
I have a late 2nd round grade on Petty and a 3rd round grade on Hundley and the more I see of each the lower those grades are going. So, no I wouldn't take them anywhere in the first round.

Trade down is probably for the best in that scenario though. Peat will go top five so he won't be there. Scherff may be there but the more I see of him the more he looks like a RG in the NFL, maybe a RT. I have 2nd round grades on Waynes and Beasley so I wouldn't take them at #15.

I think White will already be gone. People are missing on him right now. I think he'll be the first WR drafted when all is said and done. Funchess would be great value right there and I think he'd be a good pick. I think #15 is early for Strong but I wouldn't complain about it. We could probably trade back and still get him though.

All just my opinion, obviously.

I'd have liked to have had 3 ones in 2014 draft. :truck:

Generally not interested in overwhelming draft machinations... don't find them very realistic and it's not what I would do if I were a GM. If I were a "trader", I'd be trading down and adding more lottery tickets. I agree on White and Funchess, from what I've seen so far. I'm not a buyer on Hundley, and am looking forward to seeing what OB thinks about the not-front-page QBs.

11. Houston Texans: Kevin White, WR, West Virginia
The Texans have a good team, but quarterback play will probably keep them from the playoffs this year. Landing a quarterback prospect like Jameis Winston could immediately elevate Houston into being one of the AFC's elite. The problem is Houston probably won't be picking early enough to snag him. The Texans have to hope that Connor Cook proves worthy of their first-round pick and is available. If they miss out on a top quarterback, they could target a receiver to replace Andre Johnson or a running back who can follow Arian Foster.

After posting modest production as a junior, White has broken out as a senior. In 2014, he has been one of the best receivers in college football. White has 69 receptions or 1,020 yards and seven touchdowns. By the end of the third game, he had surpassed his 2013 totals of 35 receptions for 507 yards with five touchdowns.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound White has a unique combination with size and speed. He consistently gets separation and can make contested catches with the strength to outfight defensive backs for the ball.

At this juncture, today, I would draft Shane Carden, no questions asked. Come the draft next April I wouldn't be surprised to see Carden go as a Top 10 pick. Why? This is a QB driven league and until the Texans can address there lack of a QB, Andrew Luck will continue dominate and the Texans will be relegated to 2nd or 3rd fiddle. A repeat of there first 8 years in the league. It won't matter how many JJ Watts they have.

I am a fan of Peat but I'm thinking we need to upgrade Crick before OT. I will post new mock soon with Oakman probably.

Cannot see OBrien trading first away for 2016 picks. Most prime positions like QB, OT, CB, and prob OLB need a year so any future pick would contribute little before 2017. Could you explain your thoughts a bit more?

interesting and why I posted thread. Although rated top of second Trae Waynes is drafted top twenty by some and top 12-15 on another. I wish we could get him and Prewitt in second and still get a need in later first round. This seems to be the year for a trade down as #1 not involved.

Thanks for following my posts. I think most first rounds have enough talent and this team has always needed holes filled so yes I do want trades every draft bringing more talent.
 
O'Brien has his QB for the near future in Savage.
I like the idea of trading back myself but at 12-16 I don't see any likely partners. who do you see that would be interested and who would they be after??

I think we should address:
- More speed at safety (preferably someone that doesn't trip over chalk lines)
- More sure tackling and cover ability at ILB (someone to replace Cush)
- J-Jo replacement; which I think you have covered
- someone to challenge Crick at DE

Good to see your thoughts on Savage as I like him also. #15 bait : Hundley (some GM will risk it), Beasley and D G-B. I think Some team will reach for Gurley also.

ILB, Kendricks has been falling and I cannot see why.

What have you seen from Hundley that makes you think any GM would use #15 on him?

I do think Gurley will go in the first round and could be the perfect bait for a trade.

As for Kendricks, he's small for ILB. And while a good athlete, he's not a first round athlete at OLB.

To respond to badboy, I'm just tired of the QB carousel.

If Mariota had come out last year, he would have been my pick.

I had agreed to Manziel in the third due to the concern about his size, his game, and his behavior.
Some talked me into taking him in the second, but it's only due to the inflation of the position.

How would you feel about a 3rd for Foles if Mallett/Savage don't look good the rest of this season? I like him more than any QB in this draft not named Mariota/Winston.

I originally wanted Foles. I've been telling my friends since day 1 that he is not Chips guy. He was forced to keep him as starter because of last seasons numbers
 
I really don't see Obrien drafting a QB unless he feels one is light years ahead of Savage. Savage/ Foles/Brady/or Mallet will be the starter next year

I thought Foles was underrated by the draftnik community when he was coming out in the draft.

I had a 2nd round draft grade on him and I liked him a lot. People love Kirk Cousins for some reason but I thought Foles was better then and still better now. He obviously doesn't have elite physical tools but what is there to not like about the guy? He's certainly better than average in all physical measurables, in my opinion.

I don't think he's as good as he looked last year, but I think he's better than his stats indicate this year.

I would definitely be interested in getting him for a 3rd rounder.
