Would you consider?

Multiple trade downs if it meant stockpiling picks for the next 3 years?

What if the Jets were to give the Texans the #4 overall, their 2nd round pick this year, their 1st round pick in 2007, and their 3rd round pick in 2007 to grab Bush? That's a lot to turn down and they'd still be in great position at the 4th pick.

Then let's say the Saints take Leinart and the Titans go with Ferguson instead of Young. There are quite a few teams wanting a QB. They could possibly get something like the #16 overall, a 3rd round pick this year, a 2nd round pick in 2007, and then a 1st and maybe a 3rd in 2008 to drop down again.

That would give the Texans 7 picks in the first 97 this season. 7 picks in the first 4 rounds next season. 6 picks in the first 4 rounds in 2008.

If drafted well, that's some serious talent and depth that unfortunately after 4 years still isn't fully there. I'd love to see the talents and abilities of Bush or Young. They are both incredible players, but they are just 1, ok maybe the equivalent of 2 players. You can remake this team incredibly with multiple draft picks.

#1: IF VY was around at #4, it would be silly to pass up on him
#2: There comes a point when a team can simply have too many picks. Rookies need time to develop (almost always) and if you are constantly bringing in lots of new guys each year, your team will lack that cohesive chemistry from playing together.

So basically, picking up a few extra 1st rounders=good, but going crazy and stockpiling (a la Madden) isn't effective in the NFL

I agree with your 2nd point, too many rookies can be a bad thing. Our team has a ton of young players already so I'd look to substitute a couple veteran players in there and take out some of the picks, obviously the future 1st rounders would be useful, but I'd rather grab John Abraham from the Jets and take out one of those other picks and grab another veteran from our second trade down.

Sure thats some serious talent IF (remember who the Texans GM is)..... IF they draft well but you also have to take into consideration the salary cap in the future . They may get a handful of great players in those 20+ picks over 3 years picking in the top 1/3rd of the draft but could they afford to keep them .... probably not . They would be in cap hell in the 4th or 5th season and be right back on the bottom .:twocents:

Value of #1 = 3000pts
Value of #4 = 1800pts

Diffrence 1200pts =

'06
#36
#68

'07
1st round pick (= to '06 #49)

Texans trade Jets #1 for '06 #4, #36, #68, & '07 1st rounder

Texans trade #68 for '07 2nd rounder to intrested team

Texans picks:
'06 #4, #33, #36, #65, #66, #97

'07 (2) 1st round picks
(2) 2nd round picks

I like the idea of trading down twice this is something i would like to try to do.

Trade with Jets for their first round this year second round this year first next year and J Abraham. If we have to throw in a late round pick or somthing.

Next trade with the cardinals for their first round pick this year and next year and Adrian wilson. Give them our first round pick from the jets and a third round pick.

Now we have
Round1 pick 10 Would be a good spot to pick Kiwanuka, Huff, Vernon Davis
Round 2 pick 1 and 4 I would look for a LB (Parham or Hodges) and oline
Round 3 pick 1 Look for Oline

And we would still have three first round picks next year.

Not a bad plan other than your suggestion of maybe taking Vernon Davis at #10, we have way to many holes to take a TE in the 1st round, I don't want to see us take one until the 4th at earliest unless a really good one falls to the 3rd round and we've already addressed our OLine with two picks.

For me, it would depend on which teams were looking to trade. If a particular team has a chance of having a really bad record over the next few years, then I'd have to consider it.

The Jets had a slew of injuries this past year so it'd be pretty risky because they might bounce back and be in the playoffs which would push their traded pick down.

However, if it's the Raiders or Lions... :)

Raiders, Lions, or 49ers would all be prime candidates, although I don't think the 49ers will trade much off since they are trying to rebuild their team and having two consecutive #1 picks on their team would create some big-time salary cap problems, although Alex Smith and Reggie Bush would be a nice tandem to build an offense around, and they played together in high school. Depending on Brett Favre's decision regarding retirement, the Packers could also struggle a lot next year with a new coach and 2nd year QB starting for the first time.
