Wolf6151 2016 Texans mock #2

Wolf6151

All Pro
This was harder than expected with only 6 draft picks and so many needs, priorities and tough choices will have to made, but we need a lot of help on offense. I used CBS current rankings and my own judgment.

1. Carson Wentz-QB, I know Texian believes that he'll go higher but he's currently ranked in our range at pick #22. It will be a big jump from FCS to the NFL but this guy has all the tools you look for. I really like his quick release, arm strength, accuracy, and athleticism. I've seen limited film but I really liked what I saw. He needs work on staring down his WR's though, but that's fixable. I think he sits for half of 2016 behind Hoyer and then gets some playing time after the bye week depending on how Hoyer is playing at the time.

2. Alex Collins-RB, I'm a strong believer that good RB's can be found in later rounds but this pick will be a starter. Foster will not be back and Blue, Grimes, Polk, or Hilliard are not the answer. Collins runs with authority, quick moves, and good burst of speed.

3. Kyle Murphy-OT, Duane Brown might not be back for the start of next season so between re-signing Chris Clark, who I thought played very well against Jacksonville and KC, and drafting Murphy we should have a starter at LT. Murphy might also compete for the starting spot at RT, maybe move Newton to LG. At the very least he offers high quality depth where we desperately need it.

4. Bralon Addison-WR, not the biggest guy, listed at 5'10", but he's got good hands, moves, and speeeeeeeed. We need team speeeeeeed. He can also handle PR/KR duties. This pick might take a little luck as he's listed as early 4th round though.

5. Dadi Nicolas-OLB, good size/length, speed, and quickness for the position but needs to add a little weight, currently listed at 236 lbs.. He's played DE and OLB at Va. Tech. and plays with his head up, good awareness and reactions.

5b. D.J. Reader-NT, Wilfork might be gone and Nix was a bust. Reader has good positional size, good athleticism for such a big man, decent quickness, and strength.

I would have liked to have picked a Safety and a C/OG, but with limited picks....

I like every single one of those guys. No complaints here.

Huge fan of Reader. Insanely underrated.

1. Another one added to the Wentz bandwagon! Proud to say I was the first member on this board to mock him to Texans, glad to have you on board.

2. Is it a certainty Arian won't return? I'm hoping Texans can restructure his contract, based off his production or lack there of because of injury. If gone, we could see a RB added to the mix early but that doesn't seem very O'Brian.

3. Defiantly must get a tackle 2nd day. Have no issue at all taking Murphy, but I really like Wentz LT @ North Dakota State more (Haeg).

4. Addison is a great pick, adds speed, return ability, wide receiver & running skills. Long as he doesn't clock a sub 4.35 forty @ Combine should still be available.

5. OLB here as BPA but can't help think Clowney is gone when his rookie contract expires which was a big problem taking him first to begin with, but people back then told me not to worry about that, lol

6. Great value/steal in 6th!

Exceptionally well done :barman:

1. Goff and Lynch will be gone by the time we pick, and although I still like Cook, I like Wentz quick release better. So yes add me to the bandwagon now that I've had the chance to watch some game film on him.
2. I think it's a certainty that Arian is gone, it just doesn't make sense health and money wise to keep him. Although O'Brien comes from the Belichick tree of late round RB's, I think he wants a run first team and realizes this is our 2nd biggest team need. O'Brien realizes he doesn't have a Tom Brady on the roster so he has to develop a strong run game to help his limited QB's.
3. I haven't reasearched Haeg yet.
4. We're thinking alike. Fingers crossed.
5. I agree on Clowney being gone depending on his next 2 yrs. of productivity and health. I see Nicolas as taking Simon's roster spot, quicker and faster quality depth. Possible starter in a couple years depending on Clowney's productivity. His speed and 3 cone drill times might move him up after the Combine.
6. Currently ranked as a late round prospect, but could move up to late 3rd-early 4th round with a good Combine. I used current rankings for this pick, and fingers crossed for luck.
Thanks for the beer.

Thanks, your opinion means alot on this board and I've noticed that we do seem to like alot of the same players each year. With Readers size and athleticism, and performance in the National Championship Game, with a strong Combine he could move up to the mid to late 3rd round range. At NT he just doesn't generate the wow stats, like most NT's, but once folks really start watching him individually he could move up. Athletic big men are a sought after commodity.

I like this mock and would be happy if it fell this way. But, unfortunately I have to agree with Texian about Wentz. Unless he has a meltdown at the Combine he's gone way before we pick, and the way things are going he could be the 1st QB taken. I'm trying to start to wrap my mind around having Cook, Hackenberg, and Coker there waiting for the Texans at #22 and who will BOB/Smith take if that's the case. Not a pretty picture is it? Myself, I think I would go with Coker and take my chances. As for trading up, I think the Texans have too many holes and too few draft picks to move up too much. But, if Wentz were somehow still there at say #14, they may be able to make a trade with Oakland and not give up too much.

No it's not a pretty picture, by the very nature of the position and the desperation that most teams have, those guys will get over drafted.

I agree with this, but Smith and O'Brien will have to back up what McNair said publicly about a new QB or it will make McNair look stupid if they don't. Thus McNair gets to sell more jersey's and hope to the sheep. I think the Texans will most likely trade up to about #10 ish and then trade up for whichever of the top 3 QB's is still available.

#10 sounds about right if you want to have a chance at the top 3 QB's (Goff, Wentz, and Lynch). They have to get ahead of the Rams (#15) and maybe even the Eagles (#13). The question is what do you think they'll have to give up to get to #10, and do you think the Giants will go for a trade? I'd say they're a good candidate because they have a lot of holes to fill!

#12 New Orleans looks like the best trade partner. Got their QB and have lots of holes to fill whole being seriously cap strapped, i.e. multiple draft picks should be tempting. Gets them in front of Jets, Eagles and Rams.

Yeah, Saint's would be a good trade partner too. I just wonder if the Rams, being desperate for a QB like the Texans, aren't thinking about moving up too. They know the Texans may be thinking about moving up, but what they don't know is will the Eagles or Jets take a QB in the 1st, and if so, who will they take and are they willing to move up also. This could be one of those drafts like the one a few years ago when the Jets moved way up to draft "Dirty Sanchez." We could see a lot of movement from several teams. Maybe even the Texans!

I have doubts that moving to #12 is far enough, to many teams in the top 15 picks need QB's (Eagles, Rams, Jets, Browns, possibly the 49rs, Bears, and Cowboys) and not enough good QB's to go around. Thus we may have to move up to around 7-8 to get ahead of others and it gets really expensive. I heard a few days ago on 610am that the Texans are looking to trade picks and Clowney in a package deal to move up. I know it's just rumor, but it makes sense. Scenario, #22 and Clowney, how far up does that get us? I get a feeling this year the Texans are willing to overpay to move up and fulfill McNairs suggestions of a future QB. McNair is desperate to bring new energy to this team and pacify the sheep. You could drive yourself crazy trying to play out all the trade scenarios in your head.

Anyone know when FA starts? With a decent amount of money to spend this year, and the ability to cut players and make more, I think we fill at least a couple positions with decent talent level players thus freeing us up to spend more liberally in the draft for our future QB. It's times like this that I'm glad I'm not in Rick Smiths seat, I'd be eating TUMS like candy.

We'll take a $7M hit if we trade Clowney. I don't see the Texans even thinking about trading him this off season.

yea, maybe next offseason when they have a better handle on the situation. Texans would look pretty lame, with mud all over face this off season if they tried to move the former #1 overall pick for peanuts.
