With 20-20 hindsight, would you have taken Sean Taylor or D-Rob

There's been a lot of hype about the Cowboy's big safety from Oklahoma,
Roy Williams. Then when another supersized safety, Sean Taylor from
Miami, came into the draft last spring, the hype continued about big safetys
and how Taylor might be even better than Williams and then Taylor went faster in the draft than any safety ever had - 5th overall ! And a lot of Texans' fans had wanted the team to move up in the draft to get Taylor. OK, a year later and knowing what we know, if both D-Rob and Taylor had been on the board when we picked @ 10, what's your choice ?
 
d-rob is the clear chooice for me. He has been one of the best if not the best corners this year. While taylor has been good but not great and can shut down half of the feild like D-rod did a times this year
 
D-rob, definitely. Taylor has not lived up to the hype and already has had run ins with his coach and quite a few off feild incidents. D-rob seems very hungry and determined and had a exceptional year when you look at his stats and from the standpoint that this was the hardest year to play db in recent memory due to the enforcement of the chuck rule. Plus I was very pleased by the play of Glenn Earl.

Eric Turner went 2nd overall in 1991 and Bennie Blades went third overall in 1988.

I remember watching the draft and being kinda dissapointed when the Texans drafted Dunta. Shows you what I know. Here's to CC and the scouting department. :party:

Great point about the enforcement of the chuck rule, Carr Bomb. That Dunta had to come in and produce as a rookie in those circumstances is rare & exceptional.

Before the draft, I had never seen Dunta play (other than highlight clips). Then in the 1st fan attended practice, I saw him lay out Matt Murphy, the 260 lb.TE. I said to myself, "Now I get it". Forget about Dunta's size, his 40 yard dash, blah-blah...the guy is just a football player. And look how much he improved over the course of the year, Dunta's extremely coachable. In hindsight, I can't be more excited about the selection of Dunta and his future with the Texans.
 
I would easily, easily take Dunta now... but in April 2004, if both Taylor and Dunta were on the board at #10, I would have taken Taylor because I had seen him play then and I had seen next to nothing on Dunta. I think the grand majority of the board would have done the same... :whew
 
you can't say sean taylor didn't play up to the hype...he only played the second half of the season...he ended with 76 tackles 1 sack 4 ints 9 passes defensed and 2 forced fumbles

d-rob ended with 87 tackles 3 sacks 6ints 13 passses defensed and 3 forced fumbles

d-rob was the better choice for our team right now but i wouldn't turn down sean taylor ever...he's a great young player
 
UHH this ones hard, I know ST is great but DR has played better, I still think in the long run ST would be the better choice, but because Duntas grown on me I would have to go with him.
 
after watching the the season and seeing both play, I'd have to say D-Rob was the best choice. He performed slightly better than Taylor but the big thing is the off the field actions. As far as I know D-Rob had no off the field problems but Taylor was arrested for DWI and refused to have his blood tested whiched land him in jail and was asked by Gibbs to sit out a week so he wouldn't destract the team.
 
I'll admit, when I was sitting at 10, heres all the players I wanted ahead of Robinson

Jonathon Vilma
Tommie Harris
Will Smith
Vince Wilfork
Chris Gamble
D.J. Williams
Kenechi Udeze
Marcus Tubbs

That's how little I thought of him at the time. All of those guys are capable of being all pro one day, but so is Robinson. His rise up the draft board is probably one of the weirdest ones I've ever seen (shot up from a 3rd rounder to top 15 pick in a month and a half)

Very true, I still remember Taylor dominating games while at Miami. I said a few months before the draft that he should be a Texan. I think DRob did great this season and he is a for sure furture pro bowler.
 
its hard to say because at the time we needed both of them. i wouldn't mind having sean becasue he is a future probowler as well but i think dunta was the better pick for this team. with sean we would only upgrade at one position but with dunta we were able to do so at two spots. i was happy with the pick because of what i saw from dunta the few games i saw. both will be stars of years to come.
 
at the time i woulda chosen ST, but knowing what i know now i would of chosen D-Rob, he's a play maker and has all the tools to be a "shut down: corner, well as close as they get !
 
If we would have traded up to get Sean Taylor.. we would have had to trade our draft.. Basicly.. getting Sean Taylor would mean us giving up Babin, and Earl.

So no.. i dont think a free saftey, the most easily filled position on the defense, is worth giving up 3 starters... no matter how good he may be in the future. Ill take my starters and the best rookie CB since Champ Bailey.
 
When looking in hindsight, you must consider other teams as well. If everyone knew what we know now, then Drob doesn't get to us at #10. Instead we would probably have Reggie Williams. I believe Taylor and Drob would have been picked before us. That being said. The Texans got quite a steal at #10 IMO.
 
Apparently the asking price was too high for that spot, even for us. Considering what we spent to get Babin, I could only imagine what the asking price was.

Im more than satisfied with D-Rob. I mean come on, he's not even 6' or 200lbs and he's a better tackler than Jamie Sharper. His technique will only improve in the years to come, which is already decent for a rook.

D-Rob. Sean Taylor is good to but when you think hind sight like the thread says, Just drafting a Safety would've left a gaping hole for CB in the future with Coleman and Glenn getting up there in age. With D-Rob living up to his expectations, we now have a CB for the future, a veteran in Marcus Coleman playing safety who started to come along towards the end of the season and should have a better season this coming year, and maybe a CB whose age shows occasionally but still has the ability to play for a couple more years.

D-Rob helped our D in more ways than one.

Now on the other hand, if the Skins want to move Taylor, I think the Texans would make every effort to get him. Charlie wanted him. :howdy:

haha yeah that is also very true. we only seem to choose guys with a lot of character, and seem to have no real selfish "look at me" players ! thats one thing i love about our team !
 
number one - i'mglad to have dunta and thanks to capers for another good draft decision. to answer the original question i would take sean taylor. he was hurt this year so we still don't know his capabilities. robinson has proven he will be a good to great cb but i think chances are taylor will be a better safety then dunta is cb. hope i'm wrong. also we haven't seen the benefits yet but i think sloan thomas might have been best steal of the draft if he has half the skills i believe him to.
 
I say draft another topshelf corner and replace foreman with DRob
then, never give him an assignment for any particular play other than:
Dunta, find the ball carrier, then break him

halfway through next season the media would be saying: "rayray who?"
 
D-rob is the man, cause he not only brings skill to his position at such a young age, but he brings excitement and make the big play when you need it to the whole secondary. Also I kinda think of him the way I did Bill Bates of the Cowboys. He was the guy who wasn't fast and wasn't the strongest, but played with heart and determination, and IMO that is a hell of a player. I myself was always the underdog, but D-rob has the one thing ST doesnt. They never saw him comming.
