Will Payne be retained?

Seth Payne is a free agent. he is also recovering from injury & on the downhill side of 30. that being said in the Texans 3-4 there are limited options to replace his roster spot. my question for all of you is this, he is projected to earn around $4,500,000 per season with a $6,500,000 signing bonus, would you do it?

I don't think he will command that type of money on the open market. Keep him a reasonable price otherwise thank him and move on.

I think CC would want to be loyal, but may let Seth price himself on the open market. When the market is hopefully cold, we can sign him for a reduced price, if his rehab is going well.

Where did you see that projection? My bet is on a Coleman type contract--somewhere between $2.5 to $3 mil per year.

i agree that sounds a lot more reasonable. And if for some reason he was suppose to make that much i would let him go, he has not been any good since the 2002 season, and it seems he is getting very injury prone at this point in his career !

IMO 2 off season in row for whatever reason. I like the guy but didn't he get paid pretty well those 2 injured years? I would ask him to do what Boselli did his last year and offer the team a discount on the next contract with plumping at end of the new contract based on stats such as games started, perhaps.

I very much hope that Payne comes back to play for us next season. He came back hard from that knee injury last season and was just starting to look like the Seth Payne we saw in 2002 towards the end of the year. I see no reason to not expect the same kind of determined comeback from his current leg injury and it's not like there are a bunch of replacements for him getting in line to sign with the Texans. Seth has a few more very good years left in him I think. He won't make what he would have made if he'd made it through the year healthy of course and I don't think the Texans should pay him an astronomical amount of money but he's well worth what he's going to cost. I expect Payne to come on strong next season in the second half and I hope to see Walker playing tough all year long as well.

I would love to have Payne back because he is very good in run stopping. He wouldnt cost too much to resign and not resigning him would almost force us to draft a DT in the 1st round, though that wouldnt be a bad idea, Id rather go with the BPA than be forced into choosing a DL.
