Will O'Brien Use Patriot Model of Trading 1st Round Draft Picks?

Lord Bills

Destruction
How much say will Obrien have in draft picks? Is it gonnna be the same situation where Rick Smith gets punked and is told which players to draft like during the Kubiak regime?

If he does, how do you guys feel about Obrien using the patriot belicheck model of always trading 1st round picks? Patriots have missed out on a lot of primo 1st round talent because of this philosophy.

What do you guys say?

Based on comments Texans FO leaked to NFLN, coaches having their say in draft are days gone by. Look for the McNair and Smith show going forward.

Nothing in this team's history would suggest that will be the case. Nothing at all can back that theory up. Kubiak had a ton of control when it came to the draft. Wade had more control and influence than anyone did for this team in his first off season with the team when we needed to turn the defense around. Bob has given a ton of respect to his coaching staff in the past in believing what their vision was for the team and if an owner and GM both do that, they have to give the HC some say so on what players they need to implement their strategies.

As far as O'Brien goes, I can guarantee you that he will have a ton of influence and guidance into who we pick. He is the new HC that needs to bring in his own staff and build the team around his systems. He won't be doing the draft himself, but he'll be telling the owner and GM who he wants and telling them exactly why just like every HC does. It would be silly not to give a brand new HC like this a lot of influence if you expect him to be successful in the formula in which he plans on utilizing to win games.

Yeah, because one anonymous comment from someone connected to the FO is gospel for a drastic change in policy.

You've been overplaying that report since it came out.

Hopefully his draft input results in more productive drafting than Belichick's drafts. Great coach, good in season GM, not so great drafter imo.

Ditto there. BB may be a great coach, but he damn sure hasn't been a great GM for the Patriots. People ignore this a lot miss it, because they win so many games every year, but BB collected a ton of picks over the years and really didn't do that well in the guys he drafted when you look back at a lot of them.

He does miss on a lot, but always seems to hit on one or two, and does a great job picking up a vet or two that others have given up on, such as Aquib (sp)

O'Brien will likely pick a QB with the first pick and look to mould the team around his guy.

So are you saying that the front office didn't say that coaching staff had to much say in the draft process. Ian Rapoport is a liar? Rapoport would use comments from a secreatry as an unamed source. Come on sorcerer everyone wants to know.

Maybe, just maybe, it is exactly as Rapoport reported, the front office thinks that the coaching staff had to much say in the draft process. Excuse me Sorcerer the credibility goes to Rapoport on this one.

Yeah, screw you Bill, I'm picking these players without your input.

Go sit in your corner and let me do my job.

I gotta agree w/ Texian here. I think the simple answer is shown in the fact that Rick Smith still has a job.

Why did Rick get to keep his job? My theory is that he pushed all the blame on Kubiak for all failures (that includes players on this team that aren't worth a roster spot). Then Bob said that fine, if you want to stay, now you have control of the ship and with it comes the blame if the ship crashes.

Obviously every coach will have input in the draft, but I think Rick is gonna have final say, and much more of a voice from this point forward.

if we trade back and get any one of TB, JF, bortles i would be happy.
Anyone one of these QBs will be excellent to have and if we get them in a trade down then bonus

And this is the difference between the 2 franchises. The Texans would never even consider making a trade for Talib or the NT the Pats traded for in season. They're not deemed Texan worthy. Hopefully this philosopy changes under BO'B. I've got my doubts.
