Will Jerome Mathis start over Corey Bradford?

Rightnow

Waterboy
I think he will by the end of the season. He needs a little more time learning the routes since he is a rookie so I think the Texans will start Bradford.

I agree. Mathis could turn out to be the wr#2 we were looking for, but he really REALLY needs to work on his routes. Is he still #13?

Although Mathis has the speed, I'm still bothered by a play against the Raiders. He had a quick slant across the middle that he let the football bounce right off of his face mask.
Hopefully he can get his hands and route running to a crisp, and then you'll see him overtake Bradford.

Bradford is our solid 2nd right now and i beleive it will stay that way. However bradford will not be improving throughout his career anymore. I beleive he has hit his prime. Mathis will earn his position by next season and will most likely play the 2nd spot for a few games this season.

And what...Bradford catches everything thrown his way?

I think Mathis will be ahead of Carey by teh end of the season. He's just got that freakish type speed.

Thank kind of thing can happen to anyone... it's a timing thing that will get better with practice. What I have noticed about Mathis' preseason play is that CBs have had to maul him to keep him from making big plays on them. I guess they'd rather get a penalty than be shown up by a late round rookie everyone considered a long-shot-track-star-wanna-be-Wide-Receiver. This kid is going to be a star. He has more heart, hunger, talent and potential than Bradford and I hope by week 4 he's starting.

Bradford is beyond his prime if you ask me. He has missed, dropped, or not tryed for some passes that were catchable in the preseason and i'm disappointed that he wasn't in the first round of cuts.

Bradford doesnt run the best routs either. He had a couple of misques in Dallas and the drops from years past still stick w/ me. I think he gets cut next week, and I hope if we do go after Peter Warrik, we dont get carried away with big money cause hes not the impact player people think he is.

peter warrick just got released so i wonder if the texans will make a run at him
PW is hurt, he is not the same old Peter Werrick. The Bungles Bangals really didn't want to let him go if he was healthy.

Assuming the team is confident in Gaffney's health, I think Bradford will be cut next week. So, yes, Mathis will be ahead of Bradford. I think he'll be the #2 or #3 by week 4.

Not that I am a huge Bradford backer, but supposedly he is having his best camp ever. I would be highly shocked if he is cut. I just don't see that happening.

To me, I think they keep 6, and it will come down to Armstrong or Sloan Thomas. It's 50/50 to me on talent alone. Armstrong has hands of steel, good size, and lots of experience. Sloan is faster, younger, has had two great pre-season games, and has way more upside potential. I wish we could keep both, but one will be going. Sloan still has practice squad eligibility, so my guess is we keep AJ, Bradford, Gaffney, Mathis, Armstrong, and Swinton. Sloan to the practice squad.

The one thing I like about Bradford is blocking downfield. That is something I think Mathis doesn't have alot of experience at yet. We shall see what becomes of Bradford though as this team wishes to get younger.

Also, I think Bradford is good for cold December games.

right now bradford is our number 2 reciever...but the way sloan thomas has been playing i wouldn't be surprised if one thomas makes the team and 2 thomas climbs the depth chart if he continues to progress...mathis has the ability to be a #2 reciever in this league but not this year...it takes recievers two or three seasons to get comfortable in the nfl mathis is no different give him atleast a full year to develop

Like Porky said, he is having the best camp of his career. He isnt going anywhere.

And Bradford had something around 2 drops all of last year. The only big drop season he has had was when he had to be the number 1 WR.

Looking at each of the remaining Texans recievers ....

A.J. We know he is the #1 option in the passing game .... nuff said

As much as i would like to see Bradford get cut , I just dont think its gonna happen . His contract is relatively small I believe its right around $1 mill for only one year . He starts the season as the #2 again . But if he doesnt produce better than last years performance quickly he may find himself on the bench come mid season .

Mathis isnt ready to start , he will contribute at some point but he wont begin the season as the #2 WR . Yes he is as advertized one of the fastest players in the NFL and will be a difference maker on special teams .

Gaffeny IF healthy is probably the #3 again but that is yet to be shown .

Swinton has been a pleasant surprise as a reciever and very good in KR/PR and should be a lock to make the team .

Sloan Thomas has been the most reliable reciever on the roster this pre-season . He has a knack for getting open , has adequate hands and enough speed to make a defense pay . If he doesnt make the roster (which i think he should) I seriously doubt he clears wavers again for a second season on the practice squad . Someone WILL pick him up .

Armstrong has arguably the best hands on the team but has been dinged up during pre-season / training camp .

I'd like to see Dom keep them all but I just cant see him doing that w/ the style of play he prefers . I think it comes down to Armstrong and S.Thomas and the final pre-season game could decide their fate .

What I would like to see ..... A.J. , Gaffeny , Swinton , Mathis , Thomas , Armstrong .

What will probably happen .... A.J. , Bradford , Gaffeny , Mathis , Swinton and either Thomas or Armstrong .

i think mathis will start the season at no.3 or 4, then about midway through jump to the 2 or 3 spot. i think he's gonna be great.

I don't see Mathis like other WR. He has amazing speed. This is what seperates him from the pack of rookie WR's. I believe he will find himself wide open more often than many other rookie WR's. This should in turn accelerate his learning curve and boost his confidence as the year goes forward. The NFL has a way of letting the cream rise to the top quickly. If he has the ability he will be the #2 WR this year. Experience or not. If Reggie Williams could start in the NFL, then why not Mathis.

Mathis did have some missed play ops ala dropped balls...but hey, even Andre Johnson dropped balls Saturday.

In the second game, Mathis looked pretty solid to me, making catches on curls and such. There is no doubt he can burn some guys down field and I think that because he will get that seperation, he will make that catch cause there will be little defender to defend. If nothing else, his speed is gonna make CB's nervous and will draw huge pass interference penalties which are just as good in my mind. (It already happend in that second game)

I already like this guy better than Bradford.

I wouldn't be suprised if they release Swinton in the next round of cuts, because if he hadn't returned that one for a TD, he might have been released today. Mathis looked just as good as he has on returns.

PS I would've like to see Thomas run some with the first offense, just to see what he could do against #1's, (he has shown he can play against #2's & 3's).

idonno: I get the feeling ala the draft the rotation will be different than anybody thought by the end of the year. Who knows what will happen there are too many guys on the cusp of becoming a playmaker. Hopefully one or two will really step up.

we all know that Philly is weak on the WR corp. so what is the option that we might make a trade offer to them for maybe a trade in the draft or something else. we all know that C.C. likes to wheel and deal.
