Why not Vernon Davis instead of Bush?

bckey

All Pro
Just like the title says. Why not take Vernon Davis (if we can trade down) over Reggie Bush. Davis has 53 lbs and 4" on Bush and is a freak also. He would cause big time mismatches. My argument is if the Texans are concerned at all about Bush not being a between the tackles type of runner then Davis should be considered. When comparing the 2 as receivers I think Davis wins hands down. Davis is a workout warrior like Bush but in a bigger package and he can block and play more downs than Bush.

Let me say that I will be very happy with Bush if he is chosen and I do not want it to turn into a Bush bashing thread. I like Williams, D'Brick, Young and Hawk also so I know I will be happy on draft day with whoever the Texans choose. Anyway, how about posting some thoughts on this. I do realize that if the Texans stay at #1 they will not draft Davis.

Name: *Reggie Bush

While Davis is a freak as well and will create matchup problems, a TE that will hopefully get 5 cathes a game is much less important than a RB that will get 15-18 carries and 4-5 catches a game. RBs are far more important to an offense's overall efficiency than a TE. I like Vernon Davis a lot, I would definitely like him on our team, he is one of several rookies that I'll definitely be trading for on Madden 07 if I buy the game, but you need more of an impact player than a TE, and I'm not sure how much of an immediate impact he'll make, I think he needs to refine his game and be put in the right situation to utilize his talents, but he certainly does have a lot of potential.

One thing I'm surprised about that has never been mentioned by any of the pundits (Kiper and crew) is that although Davis posted an outlandish 40 time, he was at the bottom of the TE group for the shuttle and cone drills at the combine. Apparently he is quick enough, but I just found it odd.

Anyway, Putzier can get the TE receiving done, he's as good a blocker as Davis and a capable pass catcher...

Davis was 1st among TEs in all of the first four measured drills they did, from what I've heard it appears he slacked off a little on those last two since he had already made his statement. Not sure I like that as an excuse or not, but that was an explanation I've heard offered for it.

because davis is an average tight end. most of his success came as either an H-back or split out as receiver. he has good hands but is pretty poor when the ball is in the air. he gets roughed up at the line. he's not going to have the amazing rookie season everyone predicts, especially with alex smith chucking the ball 15 yards down the field at best.

If your "scouting report" of Vernon Davis is true then no way Davis goes top 10 or even 1st round.

I'm all for trading down and grabbing additional picks. If we did trade down and V. Davis was the highest rated player we had on the board at that time, I'd say grab him.

I'd buy this in a NY minute.

We could do that for Reggie Bush also one name...Domanick Davis

Many people have said that already.

Davis is a TE, I have trouble drafting a tight end in the Top 10, which is where I see us being even if we traded down. Its just not that important a position in the big scheme of things. Another thing is that we are going to be a run orientated team and VD isn't going to be a huge asset with 4.3 speed if he is doubling down on a DE.
