Why did we ever draft Drew Henson?

phan1

Rookie
Well, it looks like we drafted just so we could have traded him, but we bought him for a much higher price than what we sold him for. Why did we ever bother with him?

I'm not sure what you mean exactly. We didn't "buy" him at all. We never signed him to a contract until the trade with Dallas was setup. We drafted him for a 6th rounder, and traded him for a 3rd. I don't know about you, but where I come from doubling your investment is a pretty good deal.

It would take more than two 6th rounders to get 3rd. You could barely get a low 5th rounder for that.

I think he's a bust anyway...milking an NFL and an MLB team for millions.

What did Parcells see (or not see) that would make him bench him and play worn out, used up Testeverde instead? I mean, those last games were completely meaningless for the Cowboys, and it seems like a good time to evaluate talent for next year's season. But they bench Henson as a third string QB!

Honestly, dallas did not want to play him this year, but Quincy forced Henson/romo number 2 combination. also, most of the scouting things that I read last year with the Henson trade junk stated that he was at least 2 if not 3 year from being a contributing NFL QB, and maybe a couple of more before becoming a star.

That's cool, AT, I haven't read any of that stuff.

Kind of a different philosophy that I'm used to, I guess, seeing as our rookie QB was just thrown in the fire!

So, if I understand you correctly, you are saying we MORE than doubled our initial investment. That is probably true from a value standpoint, but I was going strictly by reverse math - 3 is double 6. I guess the same could be said in many things though I think your point is very valid.

From the little bit I've seen of Henson this year he looks like he will be fine. He just needs some playing time and more book study. He throws a nice ball.

Any other coach would have played Henson, Parcells was more concrened with his personal win lost recored

There are 2 schools of thought in the NFL. Both are supported well.

1. You dont play rookie QB's unless you have too. Throwing them in and making them look bad can ruin a career.

2. You throw a rookie in and let him burn. Best way to learn.

Parcells is a number 1 kinda guy. Jones wanted Henson to play so he did. Then Parcells went back to what he wanted.

The rumors here in DFW that Henson has shown nothing, and I mean nothing, to inspire any confidence that he will be the 'Boys QB of the future. In fact there are some in Dallas saying that they may need to draft another QB this year.

Excellent. Now if only that 3rd round pick turns into a Pro Bowler... :bguitar:

The Drew draft might give us a really functional WR next year.

I just hope Casserley wont trade our picks this year once again.

It's too early to tell after just one year, but I think Babin was worth the trade. The Texans ultimately lost 2 picks for the rights to draft him, but did move up so that offsets it a little. I realize there are many different opinions regarding Babin, but I didn't see anything tremendous from the players Tennessee picked up to say they would have been worlds better.

Henson trade was a great move. period. Not only is it a 3rd round pick, but its the 10th pick.

That gives the Texans the 13th, 45th, 74th, and 77th picks I think. That's could turn into something good.

Are you trying to say that the lord is a Cowboys fan?
 Really if he was a Cowboys fan I think they would have made the playoffs again....lol j/k
