Why aren't more teams looking at VY?

phan1

Rookie
I"m probably wrong here, but it doesn't look like other teams are looking at this guy who could easily land on their lap. A lot of people are projecting him to go to the Titans, but if he doesn't (which is what I think will happen), he easily slips off to the #7-#10 pick. The Texans sent the whole calvalry to watch VY's pro-day, but what about other teams? If I'm the Raiders, Lions, or the Cardinals, I'm going to want to be all over this guy.

But I haven't heard VY going to visit with any of the teams from the 7-10th pick. Possibly cause it's too early? He went and visited Tennessee, and then Miami of all places. Is the media just under-reporting this or what?

Don't forget that last year for awhile a ton of people predicted Derrick Johnson to go #3 overall to the Browns. We all know how that turned out. True it's a different situation, different position etc, but it wouldn't be the first or last time that fans and scouts rated a guy differently. Not to mention the Raiders have Brooks/Walter, Lions might not want to go with a rookie QB again, and who knows with the Cardinals.

I'm not sure if he's right for Houston though. I'm not sure he's looking to be drafted and sit on the bench.
Young will likely sit on the bench for at least a year. No matter who drafts him.

It is (1) underreporting, and (2) overvaluing the guy on the part of the Vince Young fan club here. Maybe this will help you to understand that the rest of the NFL is not as high on VY as people are here because either (a) everybody everywhere hates Longhorns, or (b) he just really isn't as much the man as people around here want him to be.

My understanding is everyone in the top 7 excluding the Saints and Niners are hot on Vince, including the Packers. You remember the glowing things Highsmith said about VY early on, and the fact that they may not be sold on Rodgers. ProFootballTalk recently projected the Ravens trading up to get him, and the interest there has been documented. The Raiders are said to covet him, as are the Cardinals. The Rams have heaped ridiculous praise on him, and the interest by the Dolphins seems to be genuine according to John McLain's conversations with Saban, as he said this morning. Haven't heard anything about the Lions, but he could be nice on turf, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them take the best QB available when they draft.

Of course, this all could be bluffing, but the interest by teams at the top of the draft seems pretty solid.

So the only team with a QB need whose interest hasn't been documented are the Browns, Bills, and Lions. Accordingly, there are 3 teams without a QB need that are reportedly "very interested" in Young.

As I said, partially underreporting. We just aren't going to here much about other teams who may or may not want Vince down here in Houston, at this point. I am sure there are other teams who are legitimately interested in taking the guy (I think the Raiders/Cards are the best candidates at this point), but I would not be too surprised if he fell into the mid first.

As far as your take, I suspect overreporting. You indicate a number of teams being hot on Vince, but are vague as to some of the originating source. If you have any additional quotes, I (and I am sure the rest of the class) would like to read.

I cannot particularly imagine the Packers, of all teams, looking to ride Rodgers out of town without giving him so much as a pro snap. In fact, the Packers news source I found (mind you, I am not saying this is the end-all truf, just the first seemingly credible source I came across) has the Texans as being much hotter on Young than the Pack, though Pack GM and other staff did attend Young's pro day.

Rams: Scott Linehan

"I don't have that dilemma of having to decide who to take with the No. 1 pick. But if I was sitting there with the first pick, it would be hard to pass up a guy who can affect the game in so many ways the way Vince Young can,"

"As good as Reggie Bush is, (Young) does a lot of things that make him special."

"This is a playmaker's league," Linehan says. "If you start with the No. 1 criteria, scoring points and affecting the game, there isn't a guy at that position who can affect a game more than Vince Young can.

From USA Today article on Young, 3/1

Linehan is said to be "in love" with Young... just google the two names.

Packers: Post-workout

Thompson, whose team drafted quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the first round last year, was asked if he'd be compelled to take Young at the Packers No. 5 spot.

"I go back to Sam Bowie and Michael Jordan," he said. "You don't pass up Michael Jordan."

Green Bay has the fifth pick. General manager Ted Thompson walked away from Young's workout shaking his head in amazement.

"That was a hell of a workout," Thompson said. "What impressed me the most was his velocity on all his throws. And he's just so smooth in everything he does."

Raiders:

Josh McCown's account: The quarterback told Sirius NFL Radio that he was scared off by the Raiders when the brass told him they were interested in drafting a QB (Vince Young) in the first round. Oakland should've never let him leave the complex.

Numerous pundits insist Al Davis is in love with Young, but I don't have any Davis quotes.

Cards:

Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Keith Rowen took Young out for dinner to an Austin steakhouse Tuesday night for an informal interview. The Cardinals have the 10th pick of the first round.

http://www.statesman.com/sports/content/sports/stories/longhorns/03/23texfoot.html

At a news conference the Cardinals held after Kurt Warner re-signed last month, vice president of football operations Rod Graves smiled when a reporter suggested Vince Young might still be available in the draft for Arizona.

“I’d pick him up at the airport,” Graves said, a nod to the Cards’ interest in the University of Texas quarterback.

And every single one of those teams can have him. He won't be able to run like he did in college with the greatly improved talent level, and he has never beaten a good team with just his arm. He is a slower but bigger Michael Vick.

I am not a huge fan of VY mainly because yeah we see Mike Vick and he is so exciting and fun to watch but he has never made it to the Super Bowl with one of the best running games in football. Young is a good talent but if I was the Texans I would not take him. Yeah he is home grown but it shouldn't matter anything about building the best team possible. I think we should trade down to 3 or 4 and take D'Brick and get the Jets other first round pick possibly and take a solid defensive back or S. All I got to say is go Texans and let's draft smart:redtowel:

Thanks for the intel. In and of themselves, these quotes do praise Young, but in the context of each of these teams and their needs (unless Rogers somehow fell out w/ the Pack FO, I can't fathom a 4-12 team spending back-to-back first rounders on a QB) ... I have to think some of it is grandstanding (ala, the same thing Kubes and the Texans FO did in going to Austin), or posturing for a possible trade.

I am not in the ballpark of saying Young isn't good, or that none of these teams are seriously considering him - IMO, he's a great fit on both the Raiders and Cards - but I suspect some of this is angling, nothing more.

Either way, appreciate the research.

Since someone decided to go with the played out Young=Vick loop, allow me to give the standard, accepted rebuttal. Young is/was nothing like Vick at the college level. Vick was a pure option QB and never developed the pocket presence or passing efficiency that Young did in college. As a passer, Vick was much more raw, and much more of a project QB than Young is, and he has still managed to lead that team deep into the playoffs. Yes, Vick is faster and has a more powerful arm (one of the strongest in the NFL) than Young, but again, the touch and pocket awareness Young has is far superior than Vick at the college level, and unless you assume he will simply not get any better at the next level, then why would you not see him as a top prospect. Like his game or not, please compare and contrast him to someone more suitable, Randall Cunningham, Big Ben even, but stop with the Michael Vick reference (especially as if its a negative thing).

There's no way to tell in all this. My gut tells me that Linehan is earnest and they don't have a QB of the future like he may want. If GB took Rodgers because there was Favre uncertainty and he just fell right into their lap, they might write off the pick, but the VY thing could very well be a smokescreen. The Raiders thing is interesting, especially if that report that McCown was told they wanted VY is true... didn't hear the interview. But that could be a potential trade scenario for NO or us if Casserly's really good. Ray Ratto previously said OAK would take Cutler if they moved up to #2, Leinart at #5, or VY at #7.

The one thing that comes to my mind is that every single one of the sources in that excellent and informative post has a vested interest (ranging from great to small) in seeing the Texans use that #1 pick on Vince Young. If we take Young then Bush and everyone else who follows him is available one spot lower.

Even if I didn't think Young was anything special I'd be saying that. Considering the very loud roar coming from all of the Houston natives, Longhorn lovers, and locals with the big man-love on for Vince I'd add to the fire. If it gets hot enough Houston just might take him and that means I get a shot at someone I might not otherwise get to see.

I agree that the VY=MV is not particularly an accurate comparison. Completely different college careers, and everything we have seen of VY to this point indicates a completely different maturity/dedication to the game.

I still point to VY as being Cunningham esque.

I am never one for grand conspiracy theories, but you have to appreciate the simple truth in this possibility. For sure, some of these teams that claim to be very interested in Young are probably just that: very interested. Others, I feel are talking up the prospect, playing to the cameras a little, and hoping to further a private agenda. Recall if you will that very few teams in any position in the draft will clearly air their cards too far in advance of the big show, holding them close even up until the moment of the draft. Just the way it works.

Say what you will, but he can't sit in the pocket and win whe nthe run isn't there. The fact he is a treat to run is what makes him dangerous. In the NFL, that threat will be minimal due to better athletes in the LB and secondary so he will have to become a more conventional QB. So if that's the case, I would rather have the more proven conventional QB on Leinart. Those that think he can do the same in the NFL are delusional. Dante Culpepper is bigger and just as fast and he has stopped running as often as he had because he gets clobbered.:twocents:

Maybe other teams aren't interested in him because they know he isnt worthy of a 1st round selection.

The kid has bust written all over him......:stirpot:

I will say what i want. He can suceed in the pocket....thats why things like his passing accuracy and yards are very high. He is ALSO a playmaker when the pocket breaks down, which in houston of all places should be seen as very valuable. David Carr runs backwards out of bounds, vince young runs forward for big yards.

Is Mike Vick a conventional QB? You dont put players and put them into molds, you let them be themselves. Daunte Culpepper might be as big, but he is nowhere near as elusive as young. Quarterbacks can run for 1000 yards in the nfl.....see cunningham, randall. If the ball gets into the endzone, do you really care who has it?

Absolutely correct. I notice he dropped to 7th from 3rd in the Scouts Inc. ranking after his workout. Somebody is going to get burned when they pick him. I just hope the Titans are stupid enough to take him at No. 3.

I was an Aggie fan my whole life and I have been a Longhorn fan for about 10 years now. I am starting to see why people talk so much crap about the Aggies. If a player is great, why does it matter what school he went to?If you guys can't see that he is the kind player we have been dreaming about, I feel sorry for you.Let's just draft Mcneil:pigfly: I bet you guys would call him the second coming of Christ. The truth is that Vince is better than anyone else on that draft board and I think David could learn a thing or two from him(and vice versa).Hey maybe we can get a high draft pick for Carr Bomb.I think David will be great for another team a d to pass up that kind of talent (Vince)is just stupid.
