Who helps us the most?

It would seem Branch would help Mario out and allow him to not be double teamed. Spending another 1st round pick on a d-lineman would be hard to swallow to most fans though (It's obvious Kubiak isn't here to win a popularity contest, which I applaud). I think it will depend on who we pick up in free agency. If we get a DT like Redding or Sands in FA then we might pick a corner or FS. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.
 
branch would be nice, just cause it would help mario out so much, but we need alot of help at DB, so ask that question about a month before the draft
 
Branch would be the bpa so thats the direction you take. all address needs (DT Branch, FS Landry, CB Revis).

they would make a good draft board for the Texans 1st pick in this order
  1. Branch
  2. Revis
  3. Landry
 
Contrary to what many here believe, Travis Johnson was playing well when he was injured. Last year, he was a rookie and playing in the 3-4, which he was not familiar. This year he was stepping up in the 4-3 when he got hurt. Yet people are ready to can him after only 8 games playing in the 4-3 and playing well. I am dumb founded when people say get rid of him under the circumstances. With Weaver and Johnson at DT Branch does not offer tremendous upgrade. When I say Lee Evans, Regis and Landry become huge. The 1st LE TD shame on the CB, the 2nd LE TD shame on the FS.
 
Im leaning to Nelson at FS over Landry.

I still say trade down and take an OT/OG

(of course if AP is on the board)

I see what I see. If Mario is being double teamed, where are TJ's nimbers ? I don't mind the guy being on the roster. I mind the guy being on the roster and being overpaid for what he brings to the table. There has been no appreciable drop off in the DT play since he went out. And don't tell me there's not a dimes bit of difference in tallent between Branch and TJ.

From what I saw, I thought Travis Johnson looked TERRIBLE! it seemed everytime i watch him, he just got pushed away like a child. After watching the street FA's come in and play (Maddox, etc...), I'd bet they cut Travis Johnson and just take the hit. If I'm not mistaken, I think he had like 7 tackles through 8-9 games or something like that - but it was REALLY bad. I thought TJ was going to be a player, and he may yet be, but I'm not sure if mentally, he's toughest jerky in the package.

You see what you see. I see that TJ never should have been drafted for a 3-4 tackle. He was out of position. He was getting bad press in camp and probably deserved it. As the season started and progressed TJ was playing well and getting recognition from Kubiak in his pressers. The 1st 3 games this year the D did not know what they were doing, giving up close to 500 yds each game. Smith got them turned around and it wasn't until the last 3 or 4 games that the D really started coming together. That might be why there was no apprecianble drop off. TJ was out by then. I would just like to see what he can do with a full year in the 4-3 before relagating him to the high paid bench backup. I think it is smart, fair and wise not tying up cap money in two top 10 drafted DTs.

I will stand by what I wrote, "With Weaver and Johnson at DT Branch does not offer tremendous upgrade." You would still end up with (2) Top 10 DTs with a BIG drain on your salary cap. I might add with no reflection on TJ, Maddox has certainly stepped up his game when he had the opportunity and this is just another reason adding another DT with the 1st pick would appear to be "off course."

if I'm not mistaken Weaver is going in for surgery next week, his timetable for a full recovery is 4-6 months. also he is best used as the strongside DE I doubt they will be able to use him inside after this injury. so that leaves the Texans with Payne who might be finished plus is more of a 3-4 NT, Travis Johnson as a the one gap DT (that does not require double teams) was drafted to play the 3-4 as a two gap tackle. then after that good serviceable jouneyman tackles. in summary the inside is soft so teams can game plan Mario with double teams & stunts. there is not a position on this team that requires more attention than solidifying the interior of the defensive line, otherwise the Texans are wasting the chance for their 1st pick & #1 overall pick of the NFL in 2006 to excell. right now I'm so sick & tired of Vince this Reggie that there is nothing I want more than to see Mario Williams shine:rant: just look @ the talent Mario had last year (NC State) it helps :lightbulb:

to answer the original question.

1. Revis
2. Landry
3. Branch

1. Revis is the best DB in the draft and doubles as a top PR man. Good size and speed. Underclassmen who will be a great one.

2. Landry is as solid as they come at a position of HUGE need. Would help our secondary the most, but is not BPA.

3. Contrary to what beerlover said, Branch is not BPA. Revis would be BPA in this case. Branch takes too many plays off and has yet to show that he warrents where he is projected to be picked. No doubt he will be a solid player, but I woulnd't spend top 20 on him. I don't think he would help as much as advertised. I also can't advocate spending another 1st rounder on a d-linemen. Branch does not have a top motor but does have top size. I would take Okoye in the 2nd or Mebane in the 3rd/4th instead of Branch top 10.
 
nice post beerlover. Yeah what he said. Well all I'll say is you've got Reevis rated higher than I do. I want to over pay to shore up the rush defense. And you want to over pay for a smurf corner who'll have trouble with bigger recievers...and also happens to return punts. I can get that in Ross in the second or third a whole lot cheaper. Just me. I like my reach better. Bust factor is lower.
 
Of those three, I like Landry.

Branch does not penetrate. If we get a DT, we need one that will get penetration.

Revis isn't my favorite CB, but I think we need a CB more than a DT or FS.
 
I would like to overpay Nate Clements in FA so that leaves that out of the question as our #1 pick. Then we could pick up the best FS as #1 and the best DT in the 2nd/3rd round.

I think that would have the most immediate impact for our D and hopefully would also be a good young long term answer for us.

I would also like it if we took a LB.

1. Landry
2. Blades

Assuming either of Okoye or Blades is around in the second round.

I also like Griffin as a Safety but Landry has the better coverage ability which we lack.

Revis isn't undersized. What are you talking about pete? He has very good speed and is VERY quick. He he shifty with top hands. Ross has proven to be trash this year. For all his measurables he has sucked it up on the field. If you think the drop off of Revis to Ross is equal to Branch to Okoye/Dorsey then I will just stop and say it is difference of opinion. Revis has very little bust factor IMO. Cason is the other CB who will battle Revis for first taken, but both are better talents than when D-rob was entering IMO.

My question to you is why has the DT position looked better after he got hurt if he is the better player? My answer is he has not been cut and seen the checks stop like the other guys have. That will get a motor going.

And give me Maddox, and draft Branch. Now that makes a our line better.

The whole defense was in disarray trying to find their way from a 3-4 to a 4-3. The first 3 games was the worst display of defense ever. Since then they have gradually gotten better. During this time TJ was a leader and one of the better performers. But since he spent his rookie year out of position (DE) and was in a new system this year that is enough reason to get rid of him.

To fix the problem we want to spend another 1st RD pick on another DT, talk about a cap hit on 1 position? Add to the pot that Branch is a proto-typical Nose Guard and plays in a 3-4. Branch does not play in a 3 technique. But Hey, straight from the Casserly & Capers School of Drafting, let's draft a guy who will be out of position in our system, aka Travis Johnson, Jason Babin, plug him into our 4-3 and wonder why he turns out average and ordinary. No Thank You very much.

Sorry, but according to the Wolverines team web site they run a base 4-3, sometimes they go into a 3-4, but Branch is a DT in a 4-3. When they ran a 3-4 last year when Gabe Watson was there Branch played DE, not NG.

And yes I do not care what round Babin and Johnson are, they were drafted by another staff to play in another defense, and are just here until they can be replaced. Also I don't care if I have 4 1st round picks playing on the DL, in fact I prefer it.

Draft DL and DB in the 1st, everyone else is drafted later and developed. That is how most teams find success to build their core team.
 
Then you should be ecstatic if the Texans take Jabba the Hut and his 20 tackles and 1 sack this year. Because of Branch's lack of pass rushing abilities teams would continue to double/triple Mario in passing situations.
