Who gets dumped cap-free at the end of the year?

mrm17

Practice Squad
Let's make a list of who we can drop at the end of the year:

1. Seth Wand
2. Corey Bradford (nobody else even CALLED him last year when he was available)
3. Not Todd Wade (nope, we're stuck with his contract against the cap, even if we do dump him)
4. Weigert? (*might be nice if he practiced more than 3 times per season)
5. McKinney (dare we drop an Aggie, even if he's SO overrated it's comical?)
6. Milford Brown (waste of a supplemental pick)
7. Buchannon (can we have the draft picks back?)
8. Walker (talks a great game, has played exactly two great games since '02)
9. Babin (nope, he signed at least a 3-year deal, right?)

What other names can anyone else come up with?

I would completely agree with you about Carr, and saving the $8M bonus, but I have a question:

Who do we have currently, or could we lure, that would be better? Or more importantly, give us a better chance to win? Please don't say Banks - with our line, he'd fumble 8 times per game. Cheaper yes, better chance to win: NO.

With Carr as our QB we can consentrate on the lines not having to worry about the QB. BTW the pass from Carr to Bradford was perfect....

That's true, it was perfectly thrown. But to our worst receiver.

I like Carr overall, but would move him if it made business sense. And right now it doesn't make sense.

How many more guaranteed years are on Walker's deal? Again, he was another one we resigned when no one else was even calling about him.

Walker is one of the few Texans that could start on most any NFL team. AJ and Dunta are the other two.

what about Coleman? he is soft, the Texans are constantly exploited down the middle, he does not hit like a Safety with a 3 million tag & he's signed thru 2007.

Then let WAlker go to another team. His medical bills aren't worth it to me. Draft and play more young guys.

ccdude I think you are right. Those guys will likely be back. We might want to think about moving Wade to RG if we have a chance. I know Wand is terrible at LT, but at RT he would be functional. Then again if we grab a elite LT he will be there anyway. Our next coaching staff will be smart and start the rookie Winston at RT for some games maybe even the season. Look for Pitts, McKinney, Hodg or Rookie, Weigert/Wade, Winston/rookie/Wand. We will cut guys like chamberlain, hollings(who looked really slow in his return), and Riley. These guys are all likely to be gone.

Walker is signed through '09. Cut him prior to then and he counts $1.8 million per year in dead money against the cap. Example: even if he plays next year and is cut after the 2006 season, he will count ($1.8 million x 3 =) $5.4 million against the cap when he's cut for not playing in '07, '08, and '09. Between this and Todd Wade's deal, we have some serious future cap money tied up.

If, god willing *prays*, we replace our coaches next season.. we will be surprised at who goes..and who stays.

Any time there is a big "changing of the guard"..certain players who we feel are "sure things" will be cut....and others that we feel are "a waste of space".. will become starters.

Personally...Id like to see Seth Wand at RT.. and id like to see Wells getting more carries.

thats pathetic. no wonder we s###. maybe payne, pitts and carr could start for some teams as well. there are only a couple of other teams that the rest of these guys could start for.(if that)

Banks for one has he not proven he can win when he has started for us? so yes he does give us a better chance to win understand we have a mediocre QB that no way in the world deserves 8 million. i rather give those 8 million to our kicker brown that has deserved it more than our great Qb Carr.

Carr might start for another team like the Jets but only becuase Vinny isnt 100% 65 year old Vinny T is 100 times better than D Carr.

See the stick? See the stick? Go get it!! Go get it!! (Throws stick over to another teams message board)

My list so far:

Bradford
Coleman
Wade

Those who have until the end of the season:

Babin
Walker
Buchanon

bradford, colmen, fagins, mckinny, hollings, sanders, wade, riley

until the end of the season:
babin, simmons, peek, greenwood, walker, payne, bennie,

thats a lot of starters...

ugh.. some of the selections here just make me sick. People have such a short memory.. someone blows one play and suddenly they need to be fired.

Faggins is an awesome nickle corner, and we drafted him. He needs to stay for as long as we can keep him.

Babin was injured early in the season.. and this is only his second year. He deserves ALOT more time.

Walker has been playing great since he got over his injury. He IS getting old.. and if anything, that is why we should consider the possibility of letting him go.. but his production has been good.

Simmons has played VERY good for us as a backup, and is a great special teamer. he is quality depth and needs to stay.

Payne is one of the best NTs in the league and letting him go would be a big mistake. Lets try not to pin the lack of defensive production on a handful of starters.. the talent is there, the drive and playcalling isnt. Only a FEW of our defensive players need to fear for their job.

Greenwood could still turn out to be a good ILB.. he hasnt looked terrible.. he just hasnt been a playmaker. You dont need a playmaker at every position.

Here is my list.

Need to go:

Capers
Fangio
Pendry
Casserly

Thats it.. we dont have a Matt Stevens on this team. There is no one who OBVIOUSLY should not be playing in the NFL. Even our players which dont look like they should be starting can be turned into good depth.

Players that have until the end of the season to prove that they deserve a starting job:

Buchanan
Coleman
Bradford
Faggins
Greenwood
Mckinney
Riley
Peek
Any TE
Carr
Hodgedon

oh..and there is ONE Matt Stevens on this team.. Hollings.. hes taking up a roster spot.

We would be in worse shape releasing some of those players due to the cap hit that we would take.

I still don't understand all the Walker haters. He's the only one playing with emotion and fire from our defense.

Capers, Fangio, Casserly, the rest of the coaches, janitor, grounds keepers, roof opener upper, reliant energy guy, mascot, ect. Clean out the whole bunch. Our players deserve better. :deadhorse
Take if from one who has witnessed it, good coaching can make a world of difference. Sorry coaching looses games, real coaches know how to win.
Thats just my two cents worth, and my worthless opinion.

I'd like to see some Tony Hollings in the game this year and if I don't see "it" at this point then I agree with you and Tony needs to go.

I mean I want to see him with 20 carries in a game running behind our first string line (to the extent that we are able to field a first string line taking injuries into account) and then whatever happens, happens.

I agree completely. Before we throw out the whole group and have to start completely over, let's see what some good coaching can do. By this time next year if the John McClain's of the world are still saying we can be beaten by a team wearing potato sacks - then lets get rid of the whole group save two or three.

He was in as a returner during the Jaguars game and was flattened by Wimbush.

I was down on Gary Walker for all of this year and most of last, but he has looked good in the last 2 games.

Changes for LBs, DTs and DE's may be determined by who is our coach and if we are playing 3-4 or 4-3.

Which is nice to see but doesn't give me the information I want. 20 carries, no less. I want him to be the Texans running game in at least one game this season. It won't happen but that's ok too. He's done at the end of this year I think no matter what happens.

Watch him sign in the offseason with Denver and go on to gain 1600 yards next year. I'd be sick but not shocked.

And either way he will go down as a huge strike for Casserly and Capers. We all have varying opinions of Wells, but one thing we know is what our opinion of him is. Casserly's lame "we don't know what we have in Hollings because we haven't played him" statement is pathetic. Hey, Cass, find out what you have. Morency is going to be here for a while. When DD goes down find out what you have in Hollings--let him demonstrate he is either worth keeping or not. Where is aj's avatar when I need it?

Yep, it's another wonderful example of the lack of ability to evaluate or develop players. I'm fairly certain that every time Hollings was put in a game in the preseason, it was with our second team o-line versus their first team defense. Of course he sucks in that situation. Not that I think Hollings is anything special, but at least give him a fair chance.
Along the same lines, it's like putting Ragone in for the last two minutes of every preseason game, while Banks gets two quarters. We know what we have in Banks, let Ragone get some freaking playing time.

although i agree to an extent, the door swings both ways. you'd be surprised at how bad 'good' coaches look with marginal/sub-par talent, ie: JoePa in the 21st century and the change in 2005, due in large part to bluechip freshman on the team. it has also been argued that mack brown's texas teams have consistently underachieved due to sub-par coaching, with a mature vince young being the difference maker this year. a pro example is the elway/shannahan(sp?) playoffs situation, genius or talent based success? as the saying (or one of the many sayings) goes: "you can't coach speed" /implications

OT:

i'm still in strong support of the five year plan. the "win now/what have you done for me lately" ideal gets tired quick, and it doesn't mesh with the game of football at it's core. it is a shallow/superficial view that reduces winning to an empty statistic, rather than an achievement culminated by a body of work. hard work, overcoming setbacks/obstacles and dedication are intertwined in the essence of 'the game'. not saying never change or adapt, but stick to your guns and be a person of character and integrity. if mcnair said the current regime has five years and then it's time to evaluate, then they should get five years. having said that....:tomato:

Who was recruiting JoPa's players all those years he was doing so badly?
Who's fault was it then that they couldn't win games?

Your Denver reference is the main reason I am not a big fan of the Texans bringing in Kubiak.

Don't wish to discuss the horns, it would only make you mad.
You can tell me you told me so after the USC game. :thud:
:)

As for the second paragraph of your reply, I think I get the subtle drift of it.
Sometimes five years is two years too many.

you know i honestly doubt there will be nearly as many players let go as some of ya'll think...even with the new coaching staff...the reason being is in order to focus your attention to the o-line you can't have that many other positions to fill...you don't want to start a new regime with a huge cap hit due to letting people go...we'll keep walker, weigert, wade, and carr for sure...coleman might be out the door...because even i can admitt the guy isn't being the ball hawk he should be...everyone knew he wasn't a hard hitter but he should atleast have a pick or two by now...the people who are safe as of right now are:
pitts
k. brown
every draft pick of this past year
peek
stanley
d-rob
faggins
sanders
gaffney
armstrong
smith
greenwood (future 4-3 OLB)

Gaffney is an unrestricted free agent after this season and there hasn't been a peep on a new deal for him. Drew R is his agent. Don't be so sure that he'll be back.

Just so everyone knows, we have already made a new deal with Walker so that he is secured until 2009. We cannot cut him for at least another year or two, or his cap hit would be more than his salary

Cutting Payne is just stupid. He is the one Carr quoted as being th eleader of the team. If we get rid of any more defensive vets, we will sink and sink fast.

apparentl you can't say *****ic lol. they say that in G movies....

JoPa was not getting the recruits of the glory days (no one can argue people/teams/groups/countries don't ever have slumps or down time...it happens), which was a country-wide opinion (which doesn't guarantee truth, but it applies in this instance well i think), therefore penn state suffered. but landing those two or three bluechips turned him into 9-1 and in lead for the big 10 title the next year. the one year turn around not only speaks for the quality of talent, but that it was also utilized effectively through good coaching. professional example: the bolts in san diego.

what indicated that i would i get mad about talking UT football? your telling me the texas teams, under mack, HAVEN'T underachieved? how many big XII title's has he earned texas compared to the numbder of top ten finishes? seem a little imbalanced? i am in no way shape or form a pac 10/USC fan, but until proven otherwise, they are the best team in college football. not that i think texas can't beat them, or that it's even in USC's favor when/if they play, but the track record shows a HUGE difference when it comes to 'the big game':embarrass

regardless of this regime's ability and effectiveness, the understanding was a five year building process. barring any extreme incompetence (ie: TO antics, joaquin phoenix "frog delusions", etc) capers and co. deserve their five year shot for all the reasons i stated above.

so everyone figures that a major overhaul will happen this offseason, so i started this thread to see opinions on who will be gone this year...and yes, feel free to throw in coaches and GM.

Coleman

I think these 3 will happen.

I got to disagree about the Horns. Mack and the Horns WILL get their share of Big XII Championships, it will start this year and be capped off with a National Championship. I wouldn't call what they have done the last few years underacheiving, they did got to a BCS bowl game last year and were a top ten team. Anyway my point is after last year's Rose Bowl win, things have been different, they win the big games, they thirst for them. They can't wait to play USC. USC does have a remarkable record, but it will come to an end on Jan. 1st. I just don't think they blow the big games anymore, I think that's true about Choklahoma!!
