Who calls Denver's offensive plays?

Nighthawk

I understand that Kubiak has the OC title, but whoever said, in earlier threads, that he called the plays for the Broncs, didn't watch last week's game. Shanahan was calling the plays (see HBO's "Inside the NFL" this week), or are we imagining that K was in the booth and MS was just transferring them out to the field?

I've always heard that Shanahan calls the plays also. I think I've seen that somewhere on the Chronicle's page. An article came out during the coach interviews that said the fact that Shanahan calls the plays is one of the main drawbacks to hiring Kubiak.

How much would the Broncos miss Kubiak? Perhaps more than fans might think. The perception has been that Shanahan is "The Mastermind" behind the Broncos' prolific offense. Shanahan said Wednesday he gets too much credit.

"Gary calls the plays," Shanahan said. "Gary has run every offensive meeting since I've been here. Being a (former) quarterback, he's used to making quick decisions."

I've heard it is a joint effort .They sit down together come up with a game plan, and have their first 25 plays set .

I think that people are looking at Kubiak as a savior, give me a break who the offensive line coach, I believe they drafted Brian Griese, I'm not saying he's horrible but to think were going to go 12-4 in the few years is just not going to happen

I don't care what everyone says, I watched NFL Game of the week on the NFL network last night and watched Shanahan call the plays and tell Jake via the headphone system to go threw his progression. He specifically told him to watch the TE on a certain play right after Shanahan called it and Jake hit the TE for a 10 yard gain.

I understand that Shanahan says that Kubiak calls the plays but after watching that last night it kindof makes me worried. I am hoping that Kubiak can make this team work and I am behind him 100% but trust me people will be keeping a very close eye on this.

Does any one remeber the Panthers few years? Just like the Texans and they had to get rid of our past regime to rise. Kubiak is a mystery He'll probably screw up and set us back another 3-4 years

It has been said by Shan, Rod Smith, Plummer, etc. that Kubiak calls the plays and Shan relays them to Plummer.

I mean we can all believe what we want, but a fan watching an HBO show is hardly a better source than the head coach and the players.

Also....the guy whipping up the recipe on offense is Kubiak in that team:stirpot: . In tough situations....of course Shanahann will make the final decision. Going into the game however.....Kubiak needs to come to Shanahan...tell him what he's whipped up and Shanahan either agrees or disagrees and we see the result in the field.

Did you see Kubiack on the sideline? Nope, he was up in the booth. Calls the play into Shanahahan, who checks his sheet and relays them to Jake if he is in agreement. I am sure he will override if he doesn't.

On TV last weekend they were saying how everyone always thinks it's Shanahan calling the plays because he's always looking at those play cards in his hand, etc., but that it is definitely Kubiak who calls the offensive plays.

I don't think there is anything left to speculate after this post.

The HEAD COACH said Kubiak is calling the shots. What else do we need, a lie detector test?! idonno:

I'm stoked we're getting an offensive minded HC. I'd have no problem with a defensive mind, if that meant we were getting a dominant D in return. Obviously, Capers never had that in mind, because his defensive unit just got worse over time.

I'm ready to see our offense light it up and take over games. This chicken scratch offense we've watched the past four season has been quite the exorcise in futility.

McClain (I know everybody questions this already) specifically stated on SR610 that Kubiak calls all the plays except 4th down plays. The context of the question had to do with the horrible 4th-and-Goal from the 2 call from the divisional playoff game. The Broncs called a f'n fade pass which is a horrible call against an expected run blitz. You basically take your odds down to 1 in 4 unless you have TO (which the Broncs do not). So, McClain said he dug around with Denver personnel and lo-and-behold came up with a very homer answer: that Kubiak calls all plays except for 4th down plays :) and that Shanahan is basically looking through his playsheet to make sure he is keeping his head in the game and observing trends so that he's prepared to make the big calls. My bet is that Shanahan has authority to overrule any call by Kubiak and just gets aggressive with this on key plays. So the reference to the 4th down call actually sounds potentially legit.

I'm not sure if they drafted Griese or not, but I know Griese made the Pro Bowl while under Kubiak's tutelage.

Same thing I saw & why I started the thread. Shanahan was calling the plays in the game last week.

I tried to post earlier but I couldn't get on the board for some reason. I was going to start a post on the exact thing. I watched the game last night on NFL Network and thought the same thing. I remembered hearing McClain stating that Kubiak calls all the plays except 4th down but it didn't appear that way last night in the replay. I am hoping the other poster was right, that he was in the booth calling down the thunder.

I don't know about a savior, but maybe just something different. Last year stunk pretty bad, and it was the coaching more than anything else. Besides, by the posts I read, it sounds like Vince Young is supposed to be our savior...

I know that's how it looked, but players and the head coach have all been quoted as saying multiple times that Kubiak DOES in fact call the plays. He sends them to Shan and he sends them to Plummer.

Unless you know what was being said through the headset, you do not know this. Based on what Shanahan has stated, your comment is untrue.

You beat me to it! What something looks like and what's really taking place are two completely different things. What's the expression, "Looks can be deceiving".

As Texan fans I'm sure all of us want to believe that Gary Kubiak is the brains behind Denver's fine tuned offense. But here's the reality of it. It's is and always has been Mike Shanahan's offense! Gary runs the offensive meetings while Mike spreads his time around all areas of his team. Mike talks with Gary via a headset during the game as Gary acts as another set of eyes and watches closely for match-ups and trends they'd like to take advantage of. Gary will and does offer Mike certain plays but without question it's Mike's baby as to which play gets called. As a fan, if you need to feel Kubiak calls & runs the plays then you are certainly welcome to do so.....you would be wrong in doing so....but go ahead, knock yourself out!

Not that I care whether he calls the plays or not, but your opinion is in direct contrast with what the Broncos players and the coaching staff including the head coach have stated on record on multiple occassions. But I guess that if you, as a genius, need to feel like he DOESN'T call the plays, then you are certainly welcome to do so.

My sentiments exactly.

Lets just be happy our new HC's headset will actually be plugged into something. Unlike our previous check and his dumbfounded looked.
