Who are you preaching to, Richard?

No news this week for Texans fans. I guess you can always play the Vince Young card if you want to stir the pot.

I've thought about this a little myself lately. Most Texans fans are in a pretty unique situation right now. We're pulling for our team while we're also fans of the hometown guy who's now a division rival.

I wonder if fans of other teams have been in similar circumstances.

It must be a really easy gig being a sports writer in Houston these days. "Hmm I cant think of anything useful to write, lets do another VY puff piece or slam the Texans on who they should have drafted 9 months ago."

Seriously these guys aren't even sports reporters anymore, they get paid to have opinions. Well hey, I have a few opinions myself, wheres my paycheck.

I'd give you my 2 cents but I am buying lunch today and need both.:bubble:

Excellent column today by Richard Justice if that is what is being referred to. Is anyone seriousely saying that VY winning the ROY award is not a newsworthy item in his hometown where he practically has hero status? :ok:

If that was the articles intention, to say that Young won the Rookie of the Year, then it was a terrible article. It only mentions it in a paragraph 3/4 of the way down. The rest is saying how VY is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Which is why he won ROY and was the point of the column.

That was a nice read to brighten my Friday morning. If Vince had behaved similar to Eli Manning in his choices of places to play, I would perhaps feel differently. But, the Texans had the first right of refusal and elected to do so, therefore I will never tire of those singing his praises. Sorry, but VY is my hometown hero and will hold that honor with me unless work ethics prove otherwise.

I dont feel that Vince Young was the best rookie last season. There are a few rookies I thought that performed better.

1. Demeco Ryans
2. Joseph Addai
3. Devin Hester
4. Vince Young

I would much rather a linebacker who made 150+ tackles, or a running back who put up over 1,200 yards (while splitting time), or the best return man of all time, then someone who threw 13 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.

He made one really good play this season (the touchdown run in overtime against us). Aside from that, his team turned things around... I really didn't see Vince Young carrying that team like people say he did.

Well, if I could be any of those rookies, I'd choose to be Addai over Young. He is playing in a Super Bowl and has a chance to be the Super Bowl MVP. A much better representation of the city of Houston this year IMO.

Wait, I thought VY was the only guy in the NFL from Houston?

[/sarcasm]

A disgusting article from start to finish. There is a not-so-fine line between sports reporting and furious leg humping, and Justice crossed it long ago. Even in the days of one of my all-time favorite athletes, Michael Jordan, this caliber of "reporting" about even MJ would nauseate me as well.

He's bored. Still got two weeks to kill before the pitchers and catchers report. Wait untill you get a look at their combine coverage.

I think Jones-Drew was the better candidate this year.
I don't think J-D or anybody else deserves the ROY award as much as VY does. Having said that though, it should not in anyway discount the tremendous rookie season J-D had.
And what's unfortunate is that he got so little credit for his year compared to the constant raves that another player at his position, Reggie Bush, got.
In all the serious, respected awards for rookies (as determined by groups like the AP writers, The Sporting News, Pro Football Weekly), J-D and Bush's teammate Marques Colston, received more votes than any other offensive
player after Young for ROY honors. And according to these experts, he was
the clear choice as the top rookie running back.
Quite frankly, for those who ask the Texans why did they take Mario instead of Reggie Bush, the more accurate question should be why did they draft Mario instead of Maurice Jones-Drew ?

He's at the SuperBowl and kickoff is 2+ days away and he writes a I-love-VY-Texans-suxors article? Man, must not be much going on over there in Miami....

I've read pretty much the same article spun slightly different about a 1/2 dozen times this year....

Or maybe the exact opposite. He's found the bird cage and has to use up the stored VY material because he hasn't got the time to post anything original. Real short trip from south beach to kissemee. I guess justice is just enjoying the ride.

I thought it was an odd article as well. Ok, so Vince wants to win a Super Bowl. I bet David Carr does too. And Matt Hasselback. And Phillip Rivers. And Eli Manning. And Peyton Manning. And Chad Pennington. What a piece of crap article. Piece of crap timing as well. Hmmm, if it smells like crud, if it looks like crud...well the author is probably crap as well.

furious leg humping......this totally gets post of the day IMO. lol

No. You missed the point of the column entirely. Intentionally, I might add.

It seemed to me that since VY won the ROY award yesterday, it was a complete natural for his local paper to assign a columnist to highlight his excellent rookie season. Maybe you should send me a tinfoil hat, as I am sure I am about to hear about some conspiracy by our local rag. :tinfoil:

Maybe. And maybe :pigfly:

:)

McClain says in his blog that Justice was sweating bullets about the winner until he clued him in VY had won. This is what - the Diet Pepsi ROY award? How's that any more impressive from say, the Ban Roll-ON ROY award or the Fabreze Fabric Softener ROY?

Never underestimate the power of VY man-love..... :bubble:

I am sure almost everyone wants to drive a Ferrari, but not everyone is really do the work to get it and apply the dedication to get there.

I feel pretty confident in saying that Vince wants to play in the Super Bowl more than probably 99% of the players in the NFL. He has made this statement on several occassions and presents it in way of an expectation. Carr talks about it, but I don't see the hunger. Like in Rocky, Burgess Meredith says "You got to eat lightning and crap thunder." Meaning you got to work your tail off to get there, most people don't want to put in the extra work to the be the best.

It seems strange that some of you are so bent out of shape over this article. I really don't see the big deal, particularly when the Texans have consistently shown the only thing they can do well is lose! What else are they going to write about anyone? Vince is a hometown hero and deserves the coverage!

Oh I dunno. There is a game called the Super Bowl this Sunday...

I wouldn't have a problem with this article if it were written during the offseason, but it's kind of dumb to write it the Friday before the Super Bowl. Especially since the official Rookie of the Year awards were handed out much earlier.

That's fine. But Richie wrote it in a tone that spites the Texans and their fans, like all of us true fans are hung up on the fact that Tenn-10 is a tack. I got over it April 29th, 2006. Justice is bush league and his journalistic style mirrors it.

I dont wear tack gear, dont pine over the fact he isnt here, and dont play all those what-if scenarios. I wish our newspaper spoke more of the fanbase than the ones who cant let it go.

I thought the Pepsi ROY award was only handed out like yesterday or the day before.

Wrong. The rookie of the year award was granted on Thursday, as in yesterday, as in the day the column was written. Why it's somehow newsworthy that Justice or another Chronicle columinst would write about it in his hometown is beyond me. There will be more than enough SB coverage to go around, until the point of overkill. Why something like this seems to evoke such stong negativity borders on the bizarre to me, but whatever floats each person's boat I guess. I always take the tact if I don't like or aren't interested in something in the paper or on TV I don't read or watch it. Seems pretty simple to me. :hmmm:

This thread doesn't belong in the Texans Discussion board. It belongs in the NFL boards. It has nothing to do with the Texans. It's just man love for VY, a Tennessee Titan.

I thought the Pepsi ROY award was only handed out like yesterday or the day before.

It was. It's the Diet Pepsi ROY voted on by the fans (I *think* at the Pepsi website).

The AP Offensive (Young) and Defensive (Ryans) ROY awards were announced about a month ago. This award is voted on by 50 journalists and broadcasters. It is recognized as the "official" award..

but do you have the insightfulness to come up with the 8,347th VY/ texans bashing article months after most of the other empty cans stopped...thats where he's really earning his money:ok:

Ooooo OKAY!

I was wondering about that. Good.

I thought the NFL was selling the naming rights to their awards now, just like the rather dubious selling of the word "Super Bowl". I just saw some church in the news that stopped calling their shindigs "Super Bowl" party out of fear of breaking the law.

I am usually all for anything a person can do to make a buck, but using marketing power to place a word in the public lexicon and then charging people to use it is a bit much.

As long as my copy and paste buttons are working, I think Im up to the challenge

yep, Im good

I want to see VY do good because he is a hometown guy, BUT he dosen't play for the Texans and that is my team and who I'm concerned about. If R. Justice, J. McClain and Rich Lord love VY they need to move to Nashville and cover the Titans. THIS IS TEXANS COUNTRY!!!!!!!!

Is this a trick question?

If you don't get that one by now, it's really time to move on ...
Well, I'm glad that some got the real point of this thread, but as always, there are a few that are slower than most, and has to have it spelled out for them on a flashing neon sign that Justice was taking another opportunity to rub the Texans' noses in it.

The ones who plead ignorance to it are liars. They just revel in the nose-rubbing.

sad thing is if Bush won..he be doing the same thing

geeze DD won it (what he was called then)

Houstonprofootball.com had it right last season..no matter what the Texans do, won't matter because they will get slammed

difference is VY will...............he needs pieces..............and he did pretty good with garbage this yr

I'm wondering if there isn't some sort of animosity between these two (Texans & Chronicle). For example, suppose the Chronicle feels snubbed that perhaps the Texan organization doesn't respect them, doesn't cooperate with them on articles and doesn't give them "breaking news" like they would like (see Mario #1 draft pick in 2006). These guys (writers) make their living on "inside info". Seems like the Texan organization could care less about the press (and even the public/fans at times) as they go about their business and the growing pains that come with trying to build a winner. So, the writers feel ignored and start this kind of pot-stirring :stirpot: uh, stuff just to rile up everyone against the Texans. McClain will sometimes say what he thinks they will do on a particular issue, but I get the feeling he has no sources at all - just like the rest of us...

None of this is fact - just a hunch.... :hmmm:

Houston for being the 4th largest city in america, has the crappiest sports writers in america. I don't blame the Texans at all for giving them the cold shoulder. Its been almost a year and their still getting their nose rubbed in it. The problem is that Justice has ties to ESPN since I see him on there all the time.

Justice and McLame try to become the story, instead a just reporting it. Todays sports reporting is a joke, ever since ESPN put a monopoly on almost all sports coverage, its their buisness to have sports news and if they don't, they create it. They have turned sports into a freaking soap opera.

Justice and McLame need to move on to Tennessee so we can actually get some talented writers in this city. I lived up in Dallas for a couple of years and I must say, Houstonians are getting ripped off on their subscriptions. I'm not joking anybody that pays for this paper is a sucker, seriously. Losing the Post killed all accountability and professionalism in Houston's newspaper.

The best thing that we can do, anybody that has a subscription to the "Crapnicle", cancel you subscription.

There are so many young talented writers out there, I really don't understand why these guys have a job in this city.

.... Losing the Post killed all accountability and professionalism in Houston's newspaper.....

That crossed my mind, too... :) Having only the one paper in town, the Chronicle can write any crap they want. There's not another rag that can call them out when they are "spewing"....

Imagine this: Bob McNair taking a poke at Richard Justice and having to be pulled off of him. (Bud Adams actually got into a fistfight with Post writer Jack Gallagher back in the day. A young Al Davis and Bill's owner Ralph Wilson had to pull them apart)

Or this: Rick Smith taking a punch at Jerome Solomon in a posh restaurant (Oiler GM Ladd Herzeg vs. Post writer Fran Blinebury).

Or this: David Carr, getting psyched for the playoffs, tangles up with a Chronicle writer and slaps him around a bit. (Oiler QB Dante Pastorini vs. Dale Robertson)

:heh: Those were the days.....

Seriously, if you want the newest Texans news, go to ABC 13 and listen to Bob Allen. It seems like he has the best relationship with Kubiak and the most insight as to what's going on with the team. John McClain is the Texans beat writer and constantly talks bad about them. But, is it really undeserving? Do you blame the Texans for being upset with the Chronicle?

You can hate him all that you want, and you can be as irrational about it as you want to as well, but at least try not to create fictional stats to support your dislike. He threw 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. His rookie stats compare favorably to most of the great QB's in the history of the NFL in their first year if not better. If you then add in his rushing TDs, he produced more points than most of them, with fewer interceptions than most of them, and in less games than many of them.

I loved the article.

fictional stats, what the heck are you talking about.

Young had a good rookie year, but others had better. MJD should of been the OROY easily. The rookie of the year award is not most valuable rookie, Jones Drew is the real rookie of the year. Yes Young had numbers comparable to great QBs, but so does every bust out there, David Carr had numbers like Aikman.
