I was at the game yesterday and screamed myself hoarse. Without a doubt that game was the most exciting sporting event I have ever been to. The Texans played their guts out, but the loss still hurts. As a fan it was bothering me some today, so the players have to be down some. I know they are pros and claim to put it behind them, but they are people too and I bet it hurts. The game was something like Rocky, with the Texans making a comeback and taking it to the fifteenth round. In the end the game was a loss on the scoreboard, but a good showing for a team still looking for its identity.

The Bad: The Texans can’t stop the run. The Texans really can’t stop the run, and it is killing them. Some people blame it on the 3-4, I think the jury is still out on the 3-4 for the Texans. The Texans did well our first season on defense with the 3-4, and Capers did fantastic with it in Pittsburgh. Any defense can be bad if you don’t have good personnel. The Texans do not have the right personnel for stopping the run with the 3-4 or the 4-3 right now and it is a problem.

The Texans are having very good or very bad days in the secondary. I believe that Coleman will make a great safety by the end of this year into next, but he is inconsistent with play calling right now. Miscommunication is what gave Moss that big TD.

The running game is inconsistent. DD is a good running back, and so are Wells and Hollings. The Texans haven’t figured out the best way to use them all yet.

Slow starts. How many more games will the Texans have little or no scores in the first quarter? I don’t know how to make a football team come out hot, but Capers and Palmer need to figure it out.

Suspect play calling. DD getting the ball six times in a row? I don’t know if it is Palmer or Carr’s fault, but it stops right now. If Carr can’t help himself from throwing the check-down and not be patient to let something develop, then DD stays to block until he learns how. If Palmer is telling Carr to keep feeding DD the ball, then he needs to stop. Also, DD is not an outside runner and it didn’t work either time the Texans tried it. Perhaps the Texans should use the pass to set up the run rather than the run to set up the pass.

The Good: AJ = enough said. Carr = enough said.

Armstrong should be a starter. He is clutch, and never lets the team down.

Heart. This team has a lot of heart, and as clichéd as it sounds it is important. The Texans fought harder than they ever fought before in a game. I think the team played as well as the win over the Cowboys.

The offense is incredible when it gets going. At this rate the Texans will be nigh unstoppable over the next couple of years.

The conclusion: The loss hurts but the future looks bright. We have a good team here in Houston. With great management, good coaching and a desire to win. The defense needs work, but the offense can be as potent as anyone’s in the NFL. As long as the Texans keep fighting, the close ones will eventually go our way. It is just a matter of time. :thumbup

good hands , good speed , goes across the middle and just plain finds a way to get open , what more could a QB ask for in a #2 reciever ?
 
I also think that Bradford and maybe Marcus Coleman will not be resigned this summer. Payne will have to earn his contract.

Armstrong has been the biggest surprise of the year. With every game he gets better and getting out from under Bradford's big contract looks better and makes more sense.

Coleman will have a big decision to make this summer, i dont know if he thinks he can still play corner or not in the NFL. If he plays corner somewhere he will almost definately make more than we will pay him to play saftey.

I also agree that we as of yet have the personel to generate a pass rush in the 3-4. Call me naive but most teams i have seen successfully run the 3-4 have a massive 2 gap nose tackle in the middle stuffing the run like Ted Washington. I feel like Payne is better suited to playing end in our scheme. Vince Wilfork would have been a great pick up, or longer term project Issac Sopoaga from last years draft.

I dont think we should scrap the 3-4 for the 4-3 because we have already found most of the pieces and changing it up again will just set us back further, we would have WAY too many linebackers, and trading a player when you have to is alot harder to get good value. I think we are better off trying to fix the defensinve line in the offseason. i would prefer both free agency and the draft.

Great post. I agree with everything except the good coaching part.

I agree with you about stopping the run. The main problem with the 3-4 is that your D-line has to be great, every game. They just haven't seemed to gell, yet. Perhaps Payne's and Walker's injuries are bothering them more than they will admit.

The secondary doesn't bother me as much. I mean, it is hard to get down on them too much when playing the Vikings (who have the no. 1 offense in the league right now). Coleman is still learning the safety position, but his 102-yard interception/TD should give us a little faith in him. Robinson looks like he'll mature into a great player, but it'll take some time.

I think the main problem our defense has right now is pass rushing. We are giving the QB too much time to make his reads, and this puts too much pressure on our pass coverage. Opposing QB's should never have 5-6 seconds to make reads and they read again.

I'm on the fence about playcalling, tho'. I mean, the players have to execute! It doesn't matter what plays are called if the players make mental mistakes and don't block right or run the right routes or whatever.

You are right on the money about the good in our team.
