I think this guy is gonna shoot up the boards after the combines. Since we wont be getting Joe Thomas most likely I would love for this guy to fall into our laps at numero ocho.
 
I don't like taking him at #8, for that matter I don't like taking any OLineman that high (I'd be ok with taking Joe Thomas there if he falls) and I don't see the team taking an OLineman in the 1st.
 
First of all, has he declared. If he did so today, I'm sorry I missed it. I ve been drinking all night. If he declares, on basis of talent and potential...the list looks like this:
1. Gaither
2. Thomas






10. Everyone else.

I do not really know him and havent started my player research as of yet. I usually wait till the Season is over and the underclassmen declare.
 
OK, he has commited. So, does that mean there are now 2 top level LTs coming out? If so, we should be able to grab one at the 8 spot. I liked the look of Thomas's game a lot and havent seen Gaither's game. How do they compare?

This is all I know, this year Gaither did not even make honorable mention on the All ACC team. Gaither was moved back to ROT when Stephon Heyer returned from injury this year to claim LOT. Heyer did make Honorable Mention. I watched the bowl game and nothing Gaither did really stood out.

He is stupid for declaring because he isn't as well known or polished yet as some other OT's. He has tons of upside and has shut down some stud NFL DE's and OLB's, but he is only a soph this year who is 3 removed from HS. (Went to a military academy for a year first) One of the strongest OT's in years. Great footwork and huge frame. Locks his arms well. I've always been high on the guy. Marylands RB had a big day and most of that was behind Gaither to the right side. He sealed EVERYTHING and the QB was on his feet the whole game. Gaither needed another year to develop more which is scary, but he is a top 10 talent for sure. I think he is something like 6'7 330 and runs a 4.6/4.7 40. The guy can move, and he moves what ever is in his way. Everyone is so high on Mario...Gaither absolutely shut him down along with every other DE he faced.

There are now 2 elite talent OT's. Gaither will be a better pro than Thomas, but Thomas is a little more polished. I still take Gaither before Thomas because of where he should wind up when he develops more. He is worth a top 5, so I deffinatly take him at 8 and shore up that gaping, 5 year hole.
 
Now YTF, you don't know what this guys home situation is. You're talking multimillion dollar paydays. We don't know what the guys thought processes are or why he did this. You're propbably correct with your anaylisis.


But our big question this morning is...a guy this raw...this rough....where do you draft him bassed purly on potential ?

Thomas may indeed slip to the Texans if the other GMs feel the same way you do about his (Gaither) potential. along w/JaMarcus (need CJ too) coming out early a really, really good player will be pushed to the Texans selecting 8th.
 
I haven't seen the guy play myself and i think we'll probably go defense again this year's first. but man....the idea of shoring up our line even if Spencer comes back totally healthy........:drool:

Your right, I haven't heard much about Gaither here in Houston, and I put my Maryland tapes in the attic already for this year. I just assumed he was coming back to school.

Based purely on potential he is top 5 and ahead of Thomas. Based on where he is at now, who he has beaten, he is top 15 but should go top 10 after he dominates the combine.

Some GM will fall in love w/330 moving at 4.6 speed. Hopefully that is Smith and we take our franchise LT. If Spencer comes back, great, RT or RG. Gaither is a better prospect than D'brick or Thomas, but I have D'brick higher than Thomas.

I don't think he is declaring, but Gaither runs circles around him in thems of where he already is and then add on to that where he potential should take him and it just makes me laugh.
 
I don't think we are going to draft OL in the first round because Smith and Kubiak have said that we are looking for play makers and pass rush. Another thing is that we didn't even look at D'Brick last year which shows me that we aren't interested in spending high draft picks on OL, especially in the zone blocking system.
 
I keep hearing he is top 5, top 15, better than D'Brick, better than Thomas. If all this true why couldn't he even get mentioned as an honorable mention in the ACC? Much less All American.

He is a soph that was moved around because of his athleticsm to help get the best 5 on the field. He was suspended early in the year for breaking a team rule and I believe broke curfew and didn't start his bolw game.

I've looked a lot of different MB opinions on him. Very few people think as highly of him as I do, but almost everyone says 1st round. That is now, and he will rise. He apparently is 6'9 not 6'7 as I posted.

YTF you are reminding me more and more of Mel Kiper and your similar abilities to lock on to a player...I guess saying you are like Mel Kiper could be a compliment for some.
 
I'm not saying he hasn't got a chance to be a monster, because he does. But to take the guy now with a day one pick...is just pure speculation at this point in time. Freidgen put the wing man with him for a reason this season. Heyer was the OLT at Maryland far a reason this season. At his point in time I have him rated as the third best right tackle in the group...behind the Arkansas guy. That doesn't mean he won't be drafted higher than that. You would hope the report came back from the draft advisory comitee was positive and he made his decision to come out based on that report. I dunno just a guess. But he is not without his warts. He's young and there'll be a patience factor with him. He's not plug and play.

Mario had four sacks against Maryland in 2005, when did Gaither shut him down?

On the Maryland front, DT Dre Moore will make the wise decision to return to school, while OT Jared Gaither reportedly has made up his mind to enter the draft. A third-year sophomore, Gaither has limited experience, and his technique is extremely raw. He also has some character baggage due to a one-game suspension for disciplinary reasons in this year's opener. Despite his flaws, though, Gaither has the size (6-foot-9, 330) and athletic ability to be molded into a starting left tackle within two years of entering the league, which is why I expect him to be gone by the end of the second round.

No way Gaither runs a 4.6. Even if he did, who cares? Unless we are going to line him up at RB, the most he is going to run is a few yards for a sweep play.

I agree that I don't see a 6'8" 330 lb. man running a 4.6, maybe he did at one point in time back when he weighed a lot less. For that matter I also doubt Joe Staley runs in the 4.7 range at the combine. I recall Eric Winston last year being reported that he can run a 4.7 something because he had in the past, but that was back when he was a TE, and he ended up running a 4.94, which is still impressive for an OLineman. Running that fast would be indicative of his explosiveness and mobility, although you're right he never will be sprinting 40 yards during a game.

Not necessarily for footwork, it shows how quickly they can move their body laterally which obviously involves your feet but footwork technique is a different matter. Some guys are just more used to these drills anyways and train more for them so you can't put too much weight in them, but they definitely help compare the athletic ability of different prospects, one reason why they film the drills so coaches can go back and watch them again to somewhat gauge whether relatively bad times are a matter of inferior athletic ability or just poorer job of running drills.
 
Just as a reference point, what was Charles Spencer's 40 last year? I recall Winston having a 4.7 and he's fit pretty well in our system.

Gaither didn't give up a single sack that year. Not a single one. He was lined up on Lawson mostly, but Mario shifted and was kept off Gaither because he couldn't beat him. Not one person beat him that year. In the past 2 seasons, this "raw, developmental" talent has allowed 1 sack.

Everyone locks on to a player. I've been high on Gaither since before last year's draft. I will be a much better looking Mel Kiper soon enough. That is the job I am going to have.

He was considred more polished because he had more time at the DI level. Gaither has played two years of DI ball and has allowed 1 sack over two combined years. McNeil did the same sort of thing at AUB...look how that one turned out.
 
I always knew McNeil would have an impact his rookie year, but he exceeded my expectations.

If you ever find tape on Gaither, I'd appreciate it if you share. I don't like how I expect the draft to be at 7-15, so I wouldn't mind taking someone like Gaither at 8.

Well, I have tape, but it is actual tape. I don't have it online in a sendable form. I will try to dig some up tommorow.

The draft morons are saying he is a 2nd rounder and that is pure BS. He will be the 2nd OT off the board and go top 20. Has talent of top 10 at least. Will not be a reach at 8 by draft day.

If what you are saying is true and if his draft stock stays the same, maybe he'll last until our 2nd round pick! Never know in the NFL. Looking back at it, Demeco has top 10 talent as well.
 
Mostly because I have school in 5 hours or so and I'm going to go to bed now, this is all I could find on the first 3 links of a google search.

Before entering Maryland, the 6'8 330lb Gaither clocked a 4.75 fourty.

The only video youtube has is the weight lifting one w/VD and some other Maryland guys. Gaither gets his props, but no actual game tape in the video. Just saying that he is a freak of nature.
