Where Did It All Go Wrong?

Yes, its the question everyone wants to know. Where did this season all go wrong? Well, I have been researching this topic for the past couple of days and have come to this conclusion and 1 prime culprit. Here we go.

Expansion Draft: The Houton Texans select Tony Boselli with the 1st overall pick and Ryan Young with the 2nd. The Texans then say they have the most important peice of the franchise entact without ever having to go through free agency or a rookie draft: the tackles. Boselli never took a snap for the Texans, even though he is still counting on today's cap number, and Young only stayed for one season. He is currently retired. The Texans never got "insurance" even though they knew Boselli might never take a snap.

Supplemental Draft: Many NFL teams never use the once a year NFL supplemental draft. The Houston Texans seem to waste away vauable draft picks in this draft. Do Milford Brown and Tony Hollings ring any bells? While Milford Brown has become a half-way decent backup, he will never become a starter like the Texans hoped he would after wasting a 6th round 2003 draft pick when experts said he had 1st round potentinal coming out of Florida State. More noteably was Tony Hollings. A senior at Georiga Tech, Hollings had torn is ACL in his senior season after rushing for a whopping 628 yards in 4 games. The problems: Holling was a former Cornerback playing RB for the first time. The pick we used him at the time would have been #64. After the Raiders disapointing season after their Superbowl appereance, it would have been pick #33. Hollings has never rushed for over 50 yards in any game.

Draft Day Trades Gone Bad: After selecting David Carr and Andre Johnson the 1st two years in the 1st round, the Texans went defensive with in their 3rd year. They started with Duante Robinson, argubably one of the best defenders on the team today. Then, the Texans made a surprising trade with Tennesse when they came on the clock with pick #28. The Texans traded their 2nd, 2 3rds, and 4th round picks for 1 1st round pick to select Jason Babin. Babin was a DE who would play OLB in the pass rushing 3-4. Babin hasn't lived up to first round hype, and has lost his job to Shaunte Orr, a 7th round pick. He now is used only on pass rushing situations.

This offseason, the Texans traded their 2nd and 3rd round picks to Oakland for Phillip Buchanon. Although the Texans heard reports that he couldn't cover or hit, they still liked the guy who had 6 touchdowns in his career. The Texans where then left with only 2 picks on the the first day of the draft. Buchanon is currently on IR, most likely suffering for the bruises of the hits that he didn't make.

WTF Draft Picks: Bennie Joppru has never played a down for the Texans, even though he was a 2nd round draft pick. Seth Wand out of Divison III? That secret could have been kept until the 4th round. Has Vernad Morency even gotten any looks after being a 3rd rounder?

Free Agency Gone Wild: The Texans have never made any big offseason signings, sticking with the saying "Drafts build teams" which is true. But when you don't have good drafts........... Steve McKinney was signed in the Texans first offseason....He lost his job to a rookie 4th round center. Todd Wade was a big signing to help the offensive line at the RT spot, he is so slow my grandma could get around him. Morlon Greenwood was supposed to help the run defense up the middle, thats were its been the weakest this season, and Robaire Smith only looks like a Pro Bowler if we play Tennesse. And has anybody heard where Stacey Mack and Charile Clemons have disapeared to? Or Eric Brown or even Matt Stevens?

Players Let Go: Jamie Sharper was supposed to be too slow and too old. After he left I guess thats why our run defense got worse. Aaron Glenn was cut loose after the Buchanon trade. He is now covering receivers for Dallas in the middle of a playoff hunt, while we have Jason Bell covering receivers opposite Robinson.

Man behind the problem: Charlie Casserly. You look back over the years and he has made some of the dumbest moves imaginable. The ones that stick out in my mind the most are Tony Hollings, Jason Babin, and Philip Buchanon. Those guys are easily to blame for our 1-10 record. The draft picks we wasted to get those 3 busts was 7. Yes we wasted 7 draft picks for those guys. That in itself is the reason Casserly should be shown the door. Wasting draft picks, not fixing a terrible offensive line, not giving Dominak Davis and this running game a power back, are just some of the blunders he has made. He has done some great things here, but the mistakes weigh heavier. If I was Bob McNair, I know what move at the end of the season I would make.
 
Tony Hollings getting a 2 wasted on him I can see complaining about. Even taking into account the time period when it was done and how hard up for a good running back we were I think a 2 was, in hindsight a bit much. Still, I'm here to tell you that there were a significant number of people on this board (or whichever one of it's forerunners we were using at that time) that thought it was worth the 2 and who were very excited about Tony Hollings. The truth was we just didn't know enough about the guy. Honestly, we still don't know enough about him. Domanick Davis emerging when he did put an end to any chance we had of seeing Hollings produce (if he even can).

Milford Brown I cannot see getting bent out of shape over. We "wasted" a 6? Big deal. First of all a 6 is not a particularly valuable pick. Second Milford Brown may very well become our starting LG once the offensive line gets an NFL caliber offensive line coach.

I know it sounds conspiracy theory but I sometimes wonder if Joe Pendry didn't tank the line to get Palmer fired and take his job. I know how unlikely it is but I think something stinks here.

I was excited about getting Hollings. I will admit it. I thought having a blazer back there would work out well to keep defenses focused on the RB. Unfortunately that seems to be all that Tony does...between the tackles is not his forte and RB don't seem to last long if they can't find a way up the gut now and then whether through quickness, power, whatever.

As for the Pendry theory, it would not surprise me but it does seem a little outlandish. However for Pendry to really pull it off he would need some sort of idea that the team would improve dramatically after Palmer's firing to keep the job himself. Looks like his plan ultimately failed.

Boselli has no affect on the cap this year and had none last year.
 
I think we had good intentions with the Bosseli and Young picks. SHould we have at least gotten some competent insurance for both of them. Yes espeically Boss.

Please let us NOT forget the 1st round pick this past year of Travis Johnson. Now this is NOT a knock on TJ as much as it is on cass. We need a playmaking LB. D. Johnson falls in our lap and what do we do....trade back b/c he played in a 4-3 supposedly only to take a DT who ....u guessed it played in a 4-3.

Now if that doesn't make any sense I'm not sure what does.
I think Cass just put to many investments in HIGH RISK PROJECTS and if they had paid off....cass is a genius....if they don't.....well you see most of us asking for his job.

Its just like stock investing. Yes you put some of your money in high risk b/c they have the chance for the highest return but you have to have a balance of steady sure picks or less risky. He has fumbled that greatly.
 
i think part of the problem this season was that one we didn't fire palmer before training camp like we should have...and capers and company went nuts with the whole offense...just because of the cleveland game they paniced...and when your coaching staff panics the team panics...the coaching staff should have shown more confidence that it was just one bad game and left it at that...then it wouldn't have been in everyones head...the problem with these players is that they still have that game in their heads...and they think that they are in quick sand or something that no matter what they do they are gonna fail...if you think that you are going to fail and that's exactly what they've done
 
I actually think that the incompetence of the GM started with the non selection of Portis. Almost everyone was kicking and screaming to pick him and that's what the fans wanted. But Casserly and crew are so oblivious to fact that maybe picking a popular player with the fans is good for business as well. (ie..DJ). It's pretty arrogant to think that fans do not know what they would like to see in this team and it's not any different than feedback any other company recieves from thier customers. For me it stated here and the pompus comment from Casserly that he doesn't listen to fans.
 
:texflag: One of the big problems is the team always did a little better each year . The problem with this is ... we stayed the course and never addressed our biggest issues . Instead we sent two team leaders packing on defense and that was'nt broke to begin with .

The 1,000,000 dollar question is why has the OL stunk . Fred Weary was the #1 center in the 2002 draft and he can't even get a sniff . I think our OL stinks but its not because we have 240 lb linemen who are slow . We spent a #1 overall pick on a QB and a #3 overall pick on a WR and we can't block . That should get Dom and CC fired right there .

Herv...interesting last line on this take! And yes, though it does reek of conspiracy theory, if does warrant some merit. How many of us, in our careers, have worked for someone that we thought wasn't doing the job that we could do with the same set of circumstances?! That does creep in and whether we want to admit or not, some may not put the effort into making that person successful, in the hopes of gaining that spot.
