What's your impression of Babin so far?

Babin has good feet and good hands to get passed defenders, but i think sometimes he gives up on the plays a little to early. Plus we have to remember he is playing a new position and it takes a little time to get all the techinques down to be affective ! But i will say from what i've seen he looks to be progrssing very good and i'm excited about him playing here for years to come. And i dont know about dropping out into coverage, he seems a little slow unless were playing zone to where he dont have to chase recievers around, but its something i have'nt really noticed !

I agree with TexansTrueFan. Babin is showing progress each week and since he is playing a new position, he still has alot to learn.

To me, it seems likes he's getting pushed out too easily by the stronger offensive linemen. Conditioning and technique improvement will make him a much better player.

Yeah when he's in there trying to spin of the O-line he gets nowhere (occasionally gets pressure) He needs to use his hands a little more and spin a little less, and it seems like he tries to run around the oline sometimes and you cant do that, unless you expect our secondary to cover the WR all day !

yes hes damn good and hes healthy...thats all i want right now, no injuries that might restrict him....GOOOO TEXANSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!1

He is a rook that hasn't been called for many mistakes. He is doing fine. He is one of those ascending players we have that Capers was talking about.

People look at sacks way too much as an indicator for competence. He has been money on the goal line and in stopping the running game. Have we given up a rushing TD this year to running backs? I don't remember too many. Most 3-4 OLB conversions take two solid years to blossom. Heck Wong has taken two and he converted from an inside linebacker.

I just looked up the rushing TD stat. We are fourth in the league by allowing only 3.

Team G Pts/G TDs Run Rec PR KR Int Fum BPnt BFG PAT FG SFTY 2-PT
Chicago 7 17.3 11 2 7 0 0 0 1 0 1 10 15 0 0
Arizona 7 20.3 14 2 8 1 1 1 0 1 0 10 14 0 3
Baltimore 7 14.3 9 3 6 0 0 0 0 0 0 7 13 0 0
Houston 7 20.4 18 3 14 0 1 0 0 0 0 17 6 0 0

Tomlinson has one: (9:55) 21-L.Tomlinson left guard (not Babin's side) for 1 yard, TOUCHDOWN
Zereoue has two: (7:17) 28-A.Zereoue left guard (not babin's side) for 55 yards, TOUCHDOWN
(:51) 28-A.Zereoue up the middle for 3 yards, TOUCHDOWN

Zeroues where flukes, but thats still not bad considering we have played agains Preist Holmes and Fred Taylor already this year.

Very true. You think about the one Zeroue got and man we are down to two in 7 games. Not bad. Let's hope we keep it that way this week also.

Im sure you have all been waiting on my answer. I just wanted to point out that many of my points from other posts have been reiterated (however maybe in a better way that is less controversial and more appropriate)

I think Babin has shown a lot of promise . He makes Very Few mistakes , no dumb penalties . He's been Outstanding against the run and has held his own in coverage , both were area's i had concern's about prior to seeing him play . He keeps outside containment very well and is probably the best open field tackler on the team . As far as rushing the passer , it hasnt been "Stellar" but he has been effective . I think getting stronger would help him there .... overall ..... not too bad for a rookie.

he had that 1 late hit out of bounce, LT i think it was. i kind of enjoyed that hit though. but overall, id say he is coming along just fine. has great speed and is strong and a good tackler.

Babin sucks peeks tha man ( YEAH RIGHT )
Why some people are stuck up peeks A** i dont understand
heres the facts get em straight
When its the rush peeks always late
looks stupid out there all alone
while the opposing teams RB's running to End Zone
Thank god we have babin to stop the run
cause if priest had scored 4 td on us it wouldnt be fun
So listen now and listen good
Peek is the back up is that understood ???

Funny how all this is said, and i have a feeling in my direction but a previous quote from this same person "Yeah when he's in there trying to spin of the O-line he gets nowhere (occasionally gets pressure) He needs to use his hands a little more and spin a little less, and it seems like he tries to run around the oline sometimes and you cant do that, unless you expect our secondary to cover the WR all day !" is exactly the points i have already made in the past. Interesting a little bit to me.

yeah i did say that all he does is spin and go nowhere but he's only played this position for what 7 games come on i think he is still doing very well !! And dont get me wrong i actually like peek and think that one day he might make a great player for some team, but problably not ours ! But babin just needs a little more experince and if i'm not mistaken our defense has played very well lately only allowing 3 rushing td's think babin might have something to do with that ?

He obviously doesn't have the raw athletic ability to be the pass rushing phenom he was advertised to be coming out of college - not at the NFL level,
so it's unfortunate that we paid what now appears to be an ill advised high premium for him. However, he may well turn out to be a reliable, competant linebacker for us.

That is just silly and ridiculous.

We gave up second day picks and ONE net first day pick. How is that such a high price? We gave up a net 3rd. The second rd pick was displaced with a first round pick. Instead of 3 first day picks we had 2. That is not a steep price for an NFL starter.

err.. i dont agree with that. Doesnt have the athletic ability? If anything.. what he has right now is pure athletic ability.. what he doesnt have is good technique.

Ive seen faster OLBs.. but none of them were his size. The guy is fast, he is strong.. and despite what yall keep saying about him "quitting" on plays.. he HAS a nonstop motor on him... its one of the reasons we drafted him. if he seemed to "quit" on certain plays during the jags game.. there is probably a reason for it.

Also, I havent really seen him get burned on many plays since the beggining of the season. Early on I saw him mess up on some coverage.. but other than that.. I dont see passes coming his way that often.

As far as the run goes.. I havent seen alot of guys going to the outside either.. and I havent seen babin miss many tackles when they did come his way.

Maybe im not looking hard enough? It seems to me the biggest complaint im seeing is that he isnt getting enough penetration... give him some damn time! hes a freakin rookie.. from a sub par division in college.. he hasnt seen competition like this, and obviously he is going to need some time to LEARN.

bleh.. ok.. ill give you this much.. he isnt going to be rookie of the year.. he isnt leading the league in sacks..and he is not allowing us to put 10 DBs on the field while he holds the line.. with that in mind, i can understand why so many see him as a bust. :P

babin is no bust he is a play maker who needs a lil more play time at his position i see a lot of potential in his ability

The guy is leading the team on QB hurries--27 so far. JMO but if that and the 2 sacks is disappointing, maybe the expectation is too high rather than his athleticism being too low.

How can everyone not be thrilled with both 1st round picks so far?... and our 4th (Earl) for that matter.

Robinson and Babin are already starting players on the defense and both are strengths of this team- and they've only played 7 games. Babin isn't going to have 12 sacks this year, but he is creating pressure and he's doing it without shirking his run and containment responsibilities all while learning a new position. Just watch. If Denver tries to take advantage of him on play-action rollouts, Plummer will be turning right into two heavily tatooed arms.

KUDOS to Casserly and the scouting department for excellent draft picks and free agent signings- we've got quite a talented, enjoyable, and young team to watch for the next few years.

If it were on LT that was his first game in the NFL , i dont remember the hit myself but if thats the only penalty we can remember collectively called against Babin then im not complaining . Some of those late hits out of bounds are good calls and some are kinda iffy . Pretty hard to stop on a dime when you are goin full steam ahead and the ball carrier just stepped off the field half a step away . Especially when ya weigh in at 260 . We could do a lot worse in that department .... i wont mention any names (Antwan Peek might sound familiar ? :hehe: )

ANd speaking of that why isnt Earl back out there when he played against KC he looked very good,,,but brown also looked good back out there last week ! Might be scared of losing his job to the rookie ! Yeah and that was L.T Babin had that late hit on !

robinson, babin, and earl have all done what was expected of them...if you were thinking that babin was gonna come in and perform just like suggs did you were crazy...there was a big reason suggs when in the top ten in last years draft and babin went 27th in this years...way different ability...i thought 5 sacks for babin was gonna be a good season...and give him a break he is still learning the position...granted it didn't take suggs that long but suggs also played at a better football school than babin and went up against better competition

Another thing about that play, Babin had come from the opposite side of the field & was running down both the runner & tackler. He just got there a step too late. I thought that play gave us a good indicator of the kind of player we had.

At the begining of training camp , Earl was not expected to see the field at all this season . He's made the most of his opportunities to say the least .

Dunta i think he only had one sub par game , against the Vikes he got beat twice within 3 plays with the same move (in OT , the dropped ball and then the TD ) Other than that He's been better than advertised .

That pretty much sums up my opinion of Babin . He's an all around silid player , good in coverage good with his contain responsibilities , gets good pressure on passing plays and is a sure tackler .(remember the tackle he made on LT in the flat for a loss?) What more could you ask for from a rookie much less one from a small school (huge jump in competition) making a position change.

All three are doin just fine , lets hope they keep it up for the next decade or so.

Some people expect to have an All Pro at every position . Well i got news for ya This isnt Madden , you dont control all 32 teams .So ya cant trade a 7th round pick for a superstar . The salary cap cant be turned off either . Capers and Casserly have done a fantastic job putting this team together ...... Enjoy it .

People complain about the draft and how we supposedly traded away our draft or paid a "high price" for Babin but the bottom line on this draft is 7 players made the team from this draft and we didn't trade any future picks. If we really paid a high price we would have Babin and little else.

#10 - Dunta Robinson - CB South Carolina
#27 - Jason Babin - OLB Western Michigan
#122 - Earl Glenn- SS Notre Dame
#175 - Jammal Lord - FS Nebraska
#200 - Charlie Anderson - OLB Ole Miss
#211 - Sloan Thomas - WR Texas
#248 - B.J. Symons - QB Texas Tech

Bold mine

Exactly right.

Posters who want to attack the Texans, probably because they have been so successful, would love to see this pick (or Joppru, or Hollings) fail. EVery team will have picks that don't work out. It happens ... it just happens less to the Texans.

The Texans get it. Don't worry about other teams drafting good players. It happens. Just pick the players you are comfortable with ... that fit your philosophy and try to develop them as best you can.

Imagine that the Texans draft 20th next year. They will have 1 pick out of the first 51 (32+19) and that pick will be after 20 players have already been selected. You can't worry about what other teams get. They will also get some good players. Get over it.
