ok so we started off with the "five year plan" hahahahhahahahaha, man that really crashed and burned. SO, when do u guys think well make it to the superbowl?

my guess is another 5 years and heres why.

defense- we have none, smith, walker, payne will all be gone by then. TJ didnt show me much this year. peek is too dhumb to be an impact guy. Babin still has something to show. earl is a middle of the pack safety at best.pbuc, ha.
so, we have robinson as a stud and babin as a work in progress, besides that, anything im missing?

now offense- weve got AJ, and dd, mathis is a huge work in progress at wr. no oline, only oline i see here in 5 years is MAYBE pitts, and hodgen. carr can still be around.

tier1-AJ DRob, our 1st pick this year
tier2-dd dc babin wont hurt us.
tier3-earl,hodgen,TJ
tier4-everyone else

id say were 2 more top 15 picks away, and at least 2 more SIGNIFICANT free agents away that actually PRODUCE from being a contender.

In today's NFL I don't think they are 2 more top 15 picks away. Unless you consider this season. A lot will depend on who they get and if they can get an impact free agent.

The main team needs that I see for this season:

2 young very good linemen. One high pick and 1 free agent would be great
An impact Strongside DE that can pressure the QB in a 4-3
2nd corner that can cover.
A passing game that utilizes the TE.
Free up cap space.

The line is only as good as the weakest man. Replacing McKinney and Wade with better players makes Pitts/Weigert/Hodgden if they start better. Bentley and Scott or Winston would be nice fits here.

John Abraham or Mario Williams or both would be wonderful in this spot.

Robinson can be wonderful, but all the team has to do is throw the other way. Joseph from S. Carolina would fit in nicely.

They don't necessarily need to draft a TE. I saw enough at the end of the year from Rivers to think he could be a good TE for the team if they utilize him. Have him run something other than outs and see what happens. Kubiak and Denver have always used their TEs well. I think just with him here it will help.

Get rid of Walker/Wade/McKinney/Payne now. They aren't going to get better and the team is putting a lot of money in them. It will be a big cap hit, but what better time than when the team is 2-14. That starts them out fresh next year.

I think with a few solid additions the team can be back to where they were in 2004. An 8-8 season isn't a stretch and we can all pretend that we didn't have this 2 year diversion. They draft in the middle of the pack and once again get booed because they don't take the best Longhorn on the map. The following season the team improves to 10-6 or 11-5 and gets a wildcard spot. Make it a 7 year plan to get to the playoffs. If the team builds a winning franchise like Denver has I don't mind this little bump.
 
I think Peek and Babin can be good pressure ends in the 4-3. They should thrive in this kind of defense. But O-line and TE are up there in priorities right now.

I don't think either can play LDE on 1st and 2nd downs. They are too small. I see Babin as our every down RDE and Peek as our pass-rushing LDE. We still will need someone to play LDE on rushing downs. Gary Walker might be able to do that until we find a more permanent solution.

Glad to see some topics on defense!!

What about Orr? Dude was a beast in pass rushing situations. How do you think he would do in the 4-3? Anyone think him and peek would share time?

Welcom to the boards as a poster.

Peek will likely become a DE and Orr will stay as OLB and probably start unless they bring in new, more talented LBs. Right now Wong (MLB) and Greenwood (OLB) are locks to start, as much because of their salaries as because of their talent, and Orr is likely the third starting LB for now unless we bring in a better OLB (would not be that wise of a decision) or a true MLB (bump Wong back to OLB, would be the better option of the two).
 
I think Orr is one of those talents like Foley. Not given the schemes, coaching, or time to allow him to play to his potential. :brickwall I think he could very likely become one of our best defensive players with the right coaching. Hopefully Richard Smith and company can get it going..
 
In my ever so humbled and optimistic opinion, I think the coaching staff we have employed will elevate the talent on this team.

David Carr. Kubiak has success with such QB's as Young, Elway, and Plummer.
David is more than servicable once he quits running out of bounds with the ball.(He needs to be told about the out of the tackle box rule) Oh and putting touch on the ball is just as important as throwing it as hard as you can.

AJ, Gaffney, Armstrong, Mathis. Armstrong's sure handedness gives the Texans a receiver that, given the opportunity, gets your clutch first downs and keep the chains moving. Gaffney is a solid #2, decent hands, decent speed. He needs to be coached to keep his head up and always be looking for the ball. Mathis, if he learns how to catch, is your burner. Like a Randy Moss, throw his hand up and get that touchdown. AJ, needs to keep his eye on the ball. Seems when he is wide open and the ball hits him right in the hands he drops it. He is able to make the circus ESPN high light catch.

O-Line should consist of Pitts(LT)McKinney(LG)Hodge(C)Wiegert(RG)Draft(RT)
Move McKinney to a spot he knows how to play and draft a new RT. Hodge looked pretty good at center, I feel the line could be decent.

Running Backs. Need I say it. If we draft Bush, speed, speed, and more speed. Bush, Davis, Morency. Wow.

TE. Draft one.

Defense. Walker and Smith are our DT's. Babin and Peek our DE's and Polk, Orr, Wong,(should draft an OLB) on passing downs, then go back with TJ Payne as your DT's and Smith and Walker as your DEs with Babin, Peek, Wong, as you LBs during running situation. Didnt someone say Tank Williams was a FA? I am less then impressed with our safties so either draft some or pick some up in free agency. Maybe if the Texans say they are sorry McCree would want to come back and play for us. Robinson needs to be more consistant and not give up as many big plays like he did last year and PBuc needs to pull his head out of his butt. All that talent just sitting there going to waste. Faggins is solid as your #3 CB. Need to add Depth across the board.

Thats how I see it. This year should still be better than last. Go Texans!:redtowel:

Ouch! Does that mean Wade is a lock to start too? This sounds like something the old regime would do instead of admitting they may have selected the wrong people to build the team around.

I hope the new coaching staff has the guts to make these "starters" high priced back-ups if there are better players on the team.

However, I like your thoughts if these players are the best we have on the team.

Yeah...looke for Wade to start. I know it doesn't sound good, but I think that Kubiak will help the entire o-line.

I have no problem with that if he's the best available according to the coaches' evaluation of performance.

I certainly hope he does start, but at guard. He's proved he just doesn't have the athleticism to protect the edge at tackle on passing plays. But
we've got so much invested in him, maybe we can recoup some of that huge
investment if he can play guard. He can run block, who knows maybe he might be an above average guard ?

How can u say to get rid of those guys and just take a hit. Look what happened last off season when we letter our veterans go. Everyone is quick to blame Carr and the offense for what happened but I believe it had to do with losing Glenn and Sharper. McKinney should stay if he can restructure his deal and play backup guard but payne and walker are servicable and our the veterans of this team.

Well then who's going to start at RT? Cause, if I'm thinking straight, here's how you got it going:
LT - Pitts
LG - McKinney, or whoever
C - Hodgdon, or whoever
RG - Wade
RT - ?
 
well the linebackers are hardly set...wong might not be ready by the time the season starts...if i remember correctly he suffered a complete acl tear...and we all know that injury takes really a full year to recover from...especially at the middle linebacker position...our best option might be to look to the draft for new faster linebacker to put in the middle...or to go with terry pierce who is on the roster right now...he was one heck of a college LB at kansas state but never really got a chance in denver due to al wilson...as for peek and orr...honestly i don't see them fitting into the new defensive scheme...i think both will be playing for another team next year...walker or payne will mostly be traded due to our over crowded DT talent...babin will play the weakside DE...greenwood will have one of the OLB positions...we have a lot of wholes on defense right now...by my calculations we need atleast 2 or 3 DE's...1 or 2 LB's...a starting CB and maybe another safty

as for offense...kubiak needs to quickly decide if pitts is a LT, LG, RG, or RT...the draft accordingly...i believe mckinney will be released as well as weigert due to their age, injuries, and salary...wade will stay probably at the RT position...he's just too tall for guard...with a new o-line coach maybe we'll be able to get his career back on track...carr is set at QB...runningback by committee is probably the best way for us to go no matter what we do in the draft...a #2 reciever has to be aquired via FA...and this draft is way too deep in talent at the TE position not to pick a guy up on the first day

personally although this is not a popular choice i think our best choice in the draft is to trade down with either the jets or packers and select either ferguson, mario williams, or hawk
 
On Defense I think you let go either Payne or Walker, but not both. They provide veteran roles. However between the two I think I would let Payne go he is cheaper to cut, and Walker does provide some leadership qualities. Smith and Johnson are still young and I think can develop to handle the Tackle position.

I think Babin and Peek can do a decent job at handling the DE position, however I would like to see them bring in one or two more DE's and have them compete for the spot and may the best man win. My ideal situation would be Babin everydown DE on strong side a rookie on weak side and Peek situational rusher. Unless they get a superb DE then Babin would move to the weak side and Peek would still be situational.

Linebackers, I would like to see Orr and Wong on the outside. Like many people on here I think Orr has shown he could be a beast (I'm not really to high on Greenwood) They should bring in a true MLB or draft somebody with the second round pick like Jackson if he falls that far or Hodge.

The safeties are I think fine, and should really come to the forefront this yr. However it never hurts to get solid depth. The position I would like to see addressed in the secondary is a CB because Robinson can't do it alone and so far no other CB on our roster has really stepped up. If at all possible maybe get Jonathan Joseph (he kind of reminds me of Robinson) and if not Cedric Griffith in the later rounds. (Yes, its the homer in me speaking for this guy, but you gotta admit he does have potential.) Speaking of potential one guy I think could really make it is Darrel Hunter (Or is it Darryl) He's fast, tall and has experience with man coverage, however he played for a small school so you never know how he would handle WR on a pro level. Well thems my :twocents:

They are serviceable, but very costly. At that price they should be great players. With a change to a 4-3 that gives them Walker, Smith, Johnson, and Payne that are all set to play DT. You're looking at $16 million next year for those 4 players. Who gets the time? I'd rather see the younger Johnson and Smith so they can get better. Walker and Payne both sitting is costly and they are signed through 2009 and 2008 respectively. I can see holding on to one, but at their age can the team afford it? Losing Sharper and Glenn off that defense did hurt because of the lost leadership. It might hurt to lose Walker and Payne, but there is no way the team can pay them for 3 and 4 more years.

I too liked Wong as OLB more than ILB, and I want to give Greenwood a chance under the new coaching staff before dismissing him. Wade on the other hand......

Also, did Greenwood play MLB or OLB for Miami?
