What's going on with the Redskins at Safety ?

Sean Taylor is regarded as the prototype NFL free safety, blessed with the quickness of a cover cornerback and the size of a strong-side linebacker. He has a rare combination of size, speed, strength and agility and is a hard hitter who also displays solid skills in coverage and in run support. He was named to his first Pro Bowl following the 2006 season.

LaRon Landry was coveted by a lot of Texans fans, and I'm sure many wanted him more than the guy we drafted but he went off the Board when the Redskins took him at #6. And in 2004 there was also a lot of Texans fans who wanted Sean Taylor, who was also taken by the 'Skins but even higher by at #5.
Safetys usually don't go that high, but to have one team take 2
in a period of 4 years is really unusual ? And what's also very curious is Landry was a FS in college at LSU, just as Taylors been in the NFL.

I'll tell you whats going on...

What's going on is that they pretty much have THE best safety combination in the leauge...Better to be Great somewhere than Mediocre everywhere...
 
Safety is an extremely important position when you have the right guys there.

It can make your CBs look much better.
It can make your Dl look much better.

Safeties can play back or up at the LOS if they've got the ability. They are probably the most versatile position on the D, and thats what I think the skins were going for
 
That's a lot of money to invest at one position though. Two top six picks will command a great deal of money.

There both combo safeties which is going to make their D really flexible. Either one can play center field and either one can come up in run support. both are fast and both are hitters.

I have a feeling receivers in the NFC east will be aching a little bit more then others :pirate:
 
they may be hard hitters but man i wanna see Ted Ginn (or any other speed guy) stretch em deep. that'll be ugly for them.
 
They also brought Fred Smoot Back at Cb. Not sure who the other CB is but it will make a formidable secondary next year. Definately should be another interesting year in D.C.

Looks good on paper once again but....we'll see if they can bring it all together. Defense should be killer though. I still have some gut feeling that tells me they'll make another splash and maybe go after Briggs somehow.

Well yeah they are heavy hitters, but they're not exactly Roy William and can't cover anybody, either. They're both pretty fast guys and cover a lot of ground in the defensive backfield. I'm not saying either one of them could cover Ginn (or someone comparable) one on one, but I don't see how that's any different from any other safety tandem. In fact, I'd think they have a better chance of containing someone like Ginn than most safeties would.

Is Ginn gonna play this year? I thought he'd limp through, miss training camp, come back too quickly and get hurt again.
 
Thanks. I just keep hearing "The foot injury" and it sounded like it might be a broken foot.

Sprained ankle should be okay.
 
there's all kinds of wild speculation, but that's just people throwing things hoping they stick to the wall. he sprained his ankle, and managed to run a 4.38 at his pro day with that sprained ankle. he'll be fine.
 
I have to say, a 4.38 is entirely credible, depending on what kind of sprain it was.

Cutting and planting and all that is a different kettle of fish. Still, it shows that he trusts his ankle and that's positive.
