What to do @ 8

I think any of the following picks at the 8 spot COULD be there and would help our team:

  1. QB - JaMarcus Russell, Brady Quinn - We need someone longterm.
  2. RB - Adrian Peterson - Kubiak said we need playmakers.
  3. OL - Levi Brown - A reach here, but Thomas is gone.
  4. DL - Alan Branch, Gaines Adams - We need to get to the QB.
  5. LB - Patrick Willis - Stud in the form of DeMeco.
  6. CB - Leon Hall, Darrelle Revis - This is a weakess on the team.
  7. S - LaRon Landry, Reggie Nelson - see above

Not in any particular order.

I really think we're in a great spot at 8. With a bunch of top underclassmen declaring it leads me to believe we'll landa good prospect at 8. Nowwhat we decedie to do at that point is up to the FO. I think best case scenario is good prospect falls to us at 8 and someone wants to move up 4-5 picks and we can manage a 3rd rounder out of the deal. Then at that spot we have a good place to improve our secondary with Nelson or Landry(assuming we don't adresss this in FA), CB(i really don't think we'll push hard for Samuels or Nate Clemens)or my best hope go OL. Gaither should be available and no matter if Spencer comes back healthy we'll have bookend Tackles no matter what finally. Maybe move Winston inside or we have a good swing backup tackle.

Don't be surprised to see Glenn Dorsey or Jamaal Anderson go in that spot.

I know Kubiak said we still need to get after the QB but why do some people think this means we'll use our 1st rounder on another DE?

It's not going to happen!!! We would be stupid to tie that much money into our D-line.Especially when we already have too much money tied into our D-Line. Maybe the 2nd round we go that direction or maybeif we can trade down, but paying another rookie DE top 10 money would be dumb. When Kubiak said what he said I think that he meant at the DT position, not DE.JMHO

I wouldnt mind us getting Allan Branch at 8 and then someone like Aaron Ross or Rufus Alexander in the second round. My only hope is that we dont go after a running back when we have shown that we can have an effective running game with the players we already have on the roster. Please fix the offensive and defensive lines and the defensive backfiled before going for skill positions.

Alan branch will not last to us. No way. 300 lb lineman that can pressure the Qb and stop the run are in high demand.

Should be a relatively easy pick. We have needs at virtually EVERY position. So when it gets to us at #8, you take the highest player on your board that is still available.

The Texans should be in a better position this year since they will have less options and thus less opportunity to screw this one up....

Now my opinion... IF and it's a huge IF Adrian Peterson is still on the board I dont' see how you could pass him up. He's probably a better pro style RB prospect than Reggie Bush was last year.

If he's gone, which I assume he will be, I would say best defensive player available. There won't be an OL worth the #8 pick once Joe Thomas is gone. So I'd go with either DL, CB, or possibly S (Nelson or Landry), but I really don't like picking a safety that high...

Kubiak also mentioned a play maker which leads me to believe thats what we will do in the first round and then take care of the trenches in the 2nd and 3rd.

Especially if we trade down you might see us go OL and DL in the 2nd because I think we can get an extra 2nd out of that pick.

I agree, I think if Peterson is there, Kubiak grabs him. Then I believe it's CB, then D-line.

No to Russel. Quinn yes if he is available.
Yes to Adrian Peterson.
BIG NO to Levi Brown, he is a decent player, too much of a reach even though I really would love to build the offensive line this draft.
Alan Branch YES... wow what a freak of nature...huge.
Gaines Adams No... Defensive Ends we were fine, we just need to build interior
Patrick Willis Maybe... he is a good player do not get me wrong... but I think Rufus Alexander in the second round would be a lot better. This kid is a player and I think he would be a great complement to Demeco Ryans at Linebacker. And Willis is more of a reach... I see him more of a mid level 1st round talent.
Leon Hall. YES.
Revis, no... reach.
Landry yes nelson no

So that leaves me with:
Quinn, Adrian Peterson, Alan Branch, Patrick Willis, Leon Hall, Laron Landry

My rankins to who I would want:
1: Adrian Peterson
2: Brady Quinn
3. Alan Branch
4. Leon Hall
5 . Laron Landry
6. Patrick Willis

Or a trade with the patriots and we could pickup Revis and Nelson and we would no longer have worries in the secondarys.

HUGE NOOOO to Brady Quinn...overrated and continuously chokes in the big game...cant handle pressure nor upper echelon college teams...what makes you think he can handle NFL players week in and week out???

I'm hoping for Branch at 8 but i doubt he will be there. I wouldn't mind Peterson at 8 but no Quinn or Willis. Quinn is extremely overrated and we have more pressing needs than LB. I'm even optimistic that we might trade down a few spots and grab an extra pick. Either way it turns out, I trust our new FO to make the right decisions. If we have another draft like last year this team can pick up a few more wins this time around. Not saying playoffs, but a push twords a wildcard spot isnt too far away (maybe 2008). :shades:

I think your list is screwed up a good deal.

Quinn is not worth a top 10 pick based on his play, talent, and NFL projection. Adams would be a good pick because he is a pure pass rushing DE as opposed to a complete Mario. Hall isn't a top 10 talent and never was. Revis is however a top 10 talent. Landry is not enough of a game-changer to be top 10, and two FS's won't go top 10. Nelson is the better pro prospect. He is worth our pick, not Landry. No LB in this draft is worth our pick, it is that simple.

we will go with the player that will step in and provide right away. mario, demeco, spencer, daniels...all stepped up coming out of camp. levi brown won't be our pick. we will not reach for a player at 8. we're in a position where we won't price ourselves out of a trade like we did last year, but there will be an elite prospect available that we or someone else will want and be willing to trade for. i doubt russell falls to 8, but quinn might. however, we will try to save face and pass on quinn, and if we are hellbent on taking a QB, we will wait til the 2nd and take kolb. much better value there, especially since either qb would sit a year and waste cap space. we could go with branch, but he just doesnt do a whole lot. he's not great at rushing the passer, and if we needed a big body to plug in there, we could get one later. if gaines adams is there, i dont think we'd take him either. we need more help at other positions, and while adams is a good pass rusher, he's not great against the run. we won't take a 1 trick pony.

peterson, landry, and nelson are at the top of my board in that order if we stick at 8. peterson, landry, and nelson all can step in right away. landry is the most well rounded defender, but he won't help us out as much as peterson will. nelson can play the pass as well as landry can play the run, but landry plays the pass better than nelson plays the run. thats my rationalization on why landry is ahead of nelson at this point.

i like alot of players, just not at 8. we can be pretty flexible as far as trades go with the 8th pick. with atlanta behind us at 10 waiting to pounce on one of the safeties, i think we go that route unless peterson falls by some act of God.

got a chance for sure to address the pass rushing DE position (Gaines Adams & Jammal Anderson) or best cb/fs available. I would be really pissed if the Texans take offensive playmaker except Adrian Peterson (JaMarcus/Calvin gone) :shades:

actually, think about ginn. maybe not at 8, but he could really wreak havoc with his speed on those little short passes. just look what bush did as a receiver. however, we do have mathis. if he can come back healthy, we should use him this way as a receiver in the slot.
