What players have been cut?

Per the front page's story line, no news yet as of Sunday evening.

TEXANS roster status

I just wonder if there's gonna be a "I can't beleive they cut (name)" thread in the near future.

Casserly just said on Inside The Game that they have until Tuesday in the afternoon to make cuts, and that they might just wait until then to do it.

The Front Page has a link to the list:
HOUSTON - The Houston Texans waived the following players, it was announced today:

Strong safety Curry Burns, running back KaRon Coleman, guard Curry Dawson, cornerback Vontez Duff, guard Brandon Evans, cornerback Rober’ Freeman, tight end John Frieser, wide receiver Albert Johnson, tackle Brad Lekkerkerker, wide receiver Jermaine Lewis, center Andrew Martin, linebacker Raheem Orr, defensive end D.J. Renteria, kicker Todd Sievers, wide receiver Andrae Thurman and defensive end Bryce Wyatt.

The Texans currently have 70 players on their roster, including five roster exemptions. The reason Houston has 70 rather than the league mandated 65, is because of roster exemptions for players who participated in the NFL Europe League. The following players are the NFL Europe exemptions: C Luke Butkus, P Steve Cheek, LB Antonio Rodriguez, FB Ed Stansbury and WR Chris Taylor. The NFL Europe exemptions will not expire until 3 p.m. CT, on Sunday, September 5, when a 53-player Active List will become effective.
Duff is the biggest surprise....

Raheem Orr????

The one game i saw him play (NE i believe), this LB had a nose for the ball.

Raheem Orr is a rookie. You may be thinking of Shantee Orr.... (they are not related)

I believe you are thinking of Shantee Orr, in the NE game. He is a LB from Michigan. Raheem Orr is the player we drafted from Rutgers this year. I think.

I think Duff was going to be cut inevitably. He was injured and that limited what he could show. If he makes it through waivers he might get a spot on the practice squad. I'm confused about the NFL Europe exemptions. What are the requirements that make a player exempt? Didn't Freeman and Johnson both play in NFL Europe as well? I remember hearing that the Saints had 7 players that were exempt so I guess there isn't a standard number of exemptions. Hopefully someone can shed the light on the exemptions for me.

Kinda suprised that Brad L. was cut this time around. I thought he might make it to the last set and get placed on the practice squad cause that can't be filled out until the day after final cuts. Only surprised because he recieved one of the highest signing bonuses of any undrafted FAs.

I knew Moses was a lock! There is no way this guy gets cut no. Thats the reason they drafted Duff, as a potential two way help player! Now that he is gone, Moses is all but a lock! :headbang:

Duff wasn't a surprise to me. I look at him and I see a RB -- a smaller, slower version of Lo White who obviously wasn't a viable option as a backup DB. The injury didn't help but there's probably more to it than what we see.

Moses' isn't a lock and his competition hasn't been Duff for about two weeks now. (Starling)

Agreed. Starling bumped Duff as a returner last week. The competition's now down to Starling and Moses. They could keep Moses, put Starling on the practice squad, and still change them out later. A returner's job is never secure.

But I sure wish they'd try Moses as a receiver, for just one game. That way, nobody gets hurt...

No need to put Moses as receiver. They already know what he can do there.

Starling makes the 53 unless he has a big time setback on Thursday night. The Texans really like him. There is a scenario where they could keep both but I don't see that happening.

I was a bit surprised by Brad L. too. I didn't see him get much time this year though, so it shouldn't have been a big surprise I guess. Since he was pursued by several teams, I wonder if someone else will sign him for their practice squad?
Maybe since we cut him so early, no one else will claim him and we can put him on our practice squad.

If Duff wasn't injured and was released, that would've been a little more surprising. Out of that list, Renteria kinda surprised me... I guess it's due to his showing in the Dallas pre-season game.

Wish all those guys good luck in finding another team.

If Starling continues to impress on Thursday, he is the one who is a lock.
He has got their collective attention and per Dom Capers .. plans are to test him a lot against the Bucs.

I was shock or suprised by DJ Renteria on the list also.

I'm sort of hoping they lock Starling as well....a reciever, gunner, returner. While Moses has held his own on his duties, I think Starling is roster friendly and is more flexible around the team. I like what Moses has done but I think Starlings abilities help the Texans more than it hurts them return wise......then again...we do need a good returner for field position. It's a hard choice....I'm confident the management crew and coaching staff will do what benefits the team the most.

No shocks about any of the cuts, except that some of them came this week and not next week. I am a little surprised that some of the players cut had NFL Europe exemptions. I guess the staff figured they wouldn't make the roster anyway and so it was better for the players to get cut early and try to hook on with another team.

Sievers should definitely get a job with team that needs a kicker.

It looks like other than Robinson and Babin, our draft was rather mediocre. We've already released 2 and 2 others havn't played in a preseason game.

Dunno about that. If your draft lands you two starters, that's generally pretty good. As to whether or not they are GOOD starters, well...check back in a few months, right?

I would disagree. I believe that the Texans were hoping to get two 1st round starters and so far (although it's very early), they have. They drafted Glen Earl with full knowledge of his injury with the expectation that he would progress like Hollings (limited particpation in camp, followed by a roster spot, but likely sometimes deactivated on game day (I believe)). I believe Glen Earl is scheduled to play against the Bucs. I believe that Symons is headed for the PUP list, as they anticipated.

In regards to the rest of the draft, the Texans traded down hoping to increase the numbers of 6th round and 7th round available for the practice squad. They weren't expecting that any would make the team roster, athough it's great when somebody does.

On a normal NFL team, it is surprising when 6th and 7th round picks make the squad.
Get used to it because the Texans are beginning to get as deep as average NFL teams.
