What is Laremy Tunsil's worth in a trade?

Please, please, please..keep it to the topic and not moan about what we gave for him. Everyone knows that and like the deal or not I just do not care; picks are gone. My question is if he stands on the $20 million avg per year do we pay or try to work a deal? Several teams were interested in him pre 2019 and despite some good LTs (I am not so high on those) being mocked round one could we make a move good for Houston and use that $20 m elsewhere? I realize we'd need a LT replacement but here are some deals I would be interested in that the other teams should agree to. If you are going to disagree, give reasons other than "they won't do it".

Note my preference is to extend Tunsil for a reasonable deal six years rather than 4 or 5 with $55 million GTD and that extra year to spread a huge signing bonus over to assist keeping his cap as low as possible. I also would rather pay 26 YOA Tunsil than TWill 32 but the latter can start for the entire contract plus bring much needed help in a trade.

First some comparisons: Lane Johnson Eagles RT Nov of 2019 signed 4 year extension $72 m with GTD $54.59 m and was 29 YOA. In July 2018 27 YOA Taylor Lewan extended for 5 years $80m with 50 GTD and he is a LT.

Option #1 Washington 1.2 plus Trent Williams. I have Tua going here but there is just as much reason they stick with second year QB first pick Dwayne Haskins. If so, Washington needs a left tack in worst way and TWill continues to want out and more money. They want a first for him but I say not happening. Getting Tunsil solves both a both blind side protector and moves TWill saving face for Snyder. Most have DE/OLB Chase Young to Washington but they've got to have LT and those are more rare than QBs. Benefit to Houston is a 7 straight year pro-bowler who turns 32 July this year. Having off 2019 could benefit him. Yes many would rather pay Tunsil but 1.2 gets you Chase filling another high need or trading down for more picks. For example Miami 5 & 18 brings you priority players and maybe Ruiz RG/center at 18 or a very good WR.

Option #2 Giants many thought race for Chase was done deal until they let Washington beat them to #2. Nate Solder needs to go to RT as he was less than 65 PFF not earning his paycheck. Similar options here including trade down from 1.4 and getting 2.36 for another guy and offering 2.57 for Twill. Benefits Houston with more picks and still getting a LT in draft or at 2.57.

Option 3 I see Chargers going with QB Tyrod Taylor or a FA or possibly using 3.71 on Jalen Hurts who many seem to have forgotten. Houston uses 1.4 for massive but smooth LT Mekhi Becton my favorite and 2.37 for another priority player. I would with this draft consider sending 2.57 to Washington for TWill and using 1.4 elsewhere perhaps a trade down as QBs remain on board there.

So Washington swaps a franchise LT who wants more money for a franchise LT who wants more money, but they have to part with #2 overall to make it happen?

Absolutely asinine.
apparently you're not following the information on T will as he is not returning to the Redskins. They have no starting left tackle. They would be trading a 32 year-old left tackle who (again) does not want to play for them for a 26 year old just starting his prime. There is not one other player available in free agency or in the draft who compares to Tunsil. Yeah, that's worth 1.2.

Not for the Skins who also need a Splash at QB and this is possibly another draft like 17 was, with Watson and Mahomes, in Burrow and Tua as being no truly clear number 1 QB. They need a LT its true but they need a QB worth protecting more.

Tell me what's the difference between D. Brown and Trent Williams.

D-Brown = Older, disgruntled pro bowl left tackle who wanted more money
T-Will = Older, disgruntled pro bowl left tackle who wants more money

All of your options assume that T-Will wants to play for us. Being an older player, he may want to play for a team he sees as a for sure contender and with our defense right now, we're anything but. I also think you're overplaying your hand a bit in thinking that 1 year off is going to be anything but a hinderance for an older player like T-Will. He'd more than likely spend the 1st quarter of next year just trying to knock off the rust before we really see what we'd have in him....Again, that's if he would want to play for us. If he didn't, we'd actually be worse off than we are now. At least we've got Tunsil for the next 2-3 years.

Option 1, i just don't see washington giving up 1.2 for Tunsil..not with their needs on defense. Sure they'd shore up their LT position, but they could also do that with Peters as well seeing as Philly is letting him test the market.

Option 2, not sure i follow what you're saying here..

Option 3, If we're trading Tunsil and going after T-will anyway, why would we draft Beckton with so many more needs on defense?

As you know I have posited that Washington takes Tua Tag at #2 but as I stated in my original post see option 2 there is strong likelihood they keep Dwayne Haskins as their starter and build around him. If we were 'skins we would be defending Watson (Haskins) as having no LT as Twill did not play last year. With Tunsil there is very reasonable argument that alone will vastly improve Haskins and most NFL players make significant improvement in second season.

1. Well your comparison of DB and Twill using only those "older, disgruntled wanting more money" leaves much out. Rather like comparing a Mexican fighting bull that has triumphed for 7 straight years against "Ol Bossy" who leads the cows to hay in the evenings. DB was good but he is no TWill.
2. You assume that OBrien sits this offseason and makes no moves to improve defense & you might be correct but he was very aggressive fixing our OTs regardless of what he paid. I think that indicates he will be as aggressive now but we shall see.

3. If TWill is convinced that Houston is improving team and that is what all teams do when wining and dining free agents plus he gets his money; no reason he will not sign here. Wasn't that long ago another Trent did exactly that with the then Oakland Raiders. Not only that but he agreed to switch from LT to RT.

4. Rusty? Maybe but a 10 year vet last 7 probowler knows how to remain in shape. JJ Watt did fairly well 2019 despite his injury limitations. No one said JJ was rusty even if he was.
5. Option 2 NYG move Solder to RT and Tunsil plays LT.
6. Again you assume we do nothing in FA for defense. TWill plays LT, Becton LG and Scharpie moves to RG solving that weakness.

Thanks for comments. I appreciate the time you took.

So would you say there are essentially 2 schools of thought on this site:

Your either a dw4 fan boy or a OB fan boy?

I love the wb king moniker by the way. I think it would be better served with the title czar or ceaser though. In either case, I'll consider myself the vp.
Or guys like me who think they both should be gone after 51-7.

powda

Baby can you dig your man?
There are a few of us that are Texans fan boy's... we see faults everywhere

As do I. The fallout from others here is amazing depending on the time of the year. Personally I think it's fine to be hyper critical and it doesn't mean we aren't rooting for the team.

The average fan here reminds me of a boy from the 50's reading the classifides in the back of a magazine. He spends his hard earned lawn mowing money on decoder rings and x-ray glasses.

Again and again, his excited trip to the mailbox turns to disgust as he realizes he bought junk and has been scammed.

'60's also... living in the country I never had the opportunity but would have loved it... even after the 1/2 mile walk to the mailbox

And you thought you had to repeat it for the 10 millionth time and in 6th or 20th thread That has nothing to do with O'Brien. I want O'Brien gone but do not have to repeat it a gazillion times. I try to work with what we have.
O’Brien is flawed. Watson is flawed. Tunsil is flawed. Hopefully all 3 improve. Because I think all 3 will be around for awhile. But BoB could flip the script at anytime. He could trade the other two and I would be only mildly surprised. He could have a raging boner for Burrow or another QB in this year’s draft and winds up trading both Tunsil and Watson for 1.1.

Tunsil would have solid trade value and many teams looking for a LT answer. If the team wants to hold it's purse strings tight and yet think they're going to get to a SB without spending money then there needs to be a new overall gameplan.

Find an amazing talent evaluator, trade the current assets, be in a constant re-build mode, and trade major assets before the team would have to pay them beyond their rookie contracts. The Texans could become the A's of football......we just need a "Money Football" GM.

For you guys who think Watson will never be better than what you have stated......just dangle his arse out there for NFL teams to obtain via trade. The feeding frenzy would be crazy while every analyst would say the Texans and OB were fools to trading their FQB chip away.

Now, if you fine folks want to trade Tunsil and Watson to help atone for OB's short comings, then so be it......but I wouldn't stop there, hell I'm moving Hopkins, Fuller, Watt, and every moveable asset to include the kitchen sink if it meant loading up on picks for the next 2 drafts and starting this shite show, better known as the Titanic" over with a complete rebuild. The McNairs wont move away from OB so it'll be up to OB to rebuild the team from the ground up since he's somehow convinced the McNair's that he's every bit as good at this as Bill Belichick. For the pro OB fans, where do you think the chips would fall if he was given complete control to rebuild this team in his vision?

Sounds like you want the Texans to be the Browns. Yeah they have held onto OB a few years too long, a few years longer and at worst they are the Bungles... which is better than the Browns historically

I guess I’m just not as sold on mediocrity.

Nor am I .... nor is anyone on this board. We're all ardent Texans fans .... hence, "on the board". I don't know whether our anger should be directed at O'Brien or McNair. I feel safe in saying that O'Brien is a Napoleonic, egotistical, ill-tempered man, who refuses to properly delegate authority. I have said before, that I find him a man that is easy to dislike .... therefore, it becomes very easy for me to be critical of his blunders .... especially the bigguns' !!

I like BOB the man/GM not so much the HC.

He has delegated the OC/DC duties. What more do you want?

I want to trade DW4 to rid the Texans of what's going to happen for the next 5 years. BOB can go out the door with him

I don't think anyone is sold on mediocrity... we just differ on how to improve that. IMO starting over guarantees mediocre at best for too many years
Would it not depend on what you're starting over with? If you got a great package for Tunsil and/or Watson you would hardly be starting over with mediocrity type players. I want some excitement!

I think if teams know there is an issue, like us not willing to pay $20M & afraid of a hold out, it will be difficult to get even a 1st round pick.

but he’s worth a top 10 pick. Whether that works out to two low 1sts or a teams whole draft, he’s worth a top 10 pick.

but Clooney was worth a high2nd,low 1st & we basically a mid 3rd so....

hmmm, starting over with a new QB, new WR1&2, new LT, in an OB system that most say it takes at least 3 years to 'get' and you expect greatness overnight? Not to mention gutting your already mediocre defense

I am thinking Clowney was an outlier but I understand your thinking. With Right Guard Scherff (tagged) and Byron Jones (Roby's new deal)now off the table I see a more likely deal for Tunsil remaining in H'town.

Well to be clear my post indicated Hopkins would still be on board. Haskins and Trent might not guarantee greatness but it would not hurt us too much. I didn't say anything about gutting the defense Which is pretty much gutted already. I think you were responding to the other poster who wanted to eliminate all our assets. I am not in that canoe on that particular creek.

I understand OT's thoughts but IMO we don't have to gut this roster to put exciting football on field. I actually expect to see Tunsil, Dashaun and most of our 2019 starters on field, excitement? Well that might be in the eyes of the beholder. Once game one kicks off I want to be in 100 percent optimistic Texan mode. texanpride
