What has happened to Seth Wand?

Now, I know some of you are going to say he was terrible from the get go.

Last year, when he was the starting LT, he was not that bad. Yes, I know Dwight Freeney made him look silly in both Colts games, but Freeney makes all LTs look bad. (except for Matt Light of NE, but that's another thread) But this year he has been terrible. TERRIBLE! From the beginning of training camp, he's been terrible. Much slower, and much weaker than last year. The coaches could tell from the start, or Victor Riley wouldn't have even been signed.

What's the reason? Did he just not work out during the offseason, or is it a mental thing. I just don't think he would have started every game last year if he was as bad last year as he is now.

Anyone?

Hopefully our next GM will place more emphasis on building a solid offensive line, and hiring coaches who can implement an effective NFL offense, while not paying guys like Todd Wade $10 million dollar signing bonuses.

I didn't watch the whole game. From what I saw, he seemed to be doing pretty good until the last drive, when Carr got sacked and then he jumped the gun. What else happened?

Those were his two bad plays. He got pi55ed and dominated the guy the last few plays, and held his own previously. However, on the game thread some posters did credit him with Wade's sack on one of his first snaps of the game. But let's talk about those 2 plays - what's happened to him? Rust. Lack of quality practice time with first team. Good Texan coaching.

Well, I watched the whole game. And I was pleasantly surprised at how much time Carr had to throw, even in 3rd and long situations where he had wait until a receiver came open.

But all that changed when Drew Hodgedon went down, and the OL was shuffled with Wand in at LT. It was dramatic.

Hey, for first game of the season, that wasn't bad. But I figure the coaching staff is keeping him on just long enough to let him go one-on-one with Indy and start looking worthless cause they won't double-team Dwight.

But it wasn't all coming from the left end. Wade gave up a asack, and there was a lot more pressure up the middle. Is Hodgdon that much better than McKinney at center? Is McKinney a better guard then Pitts????? Is it just how they play together?

Inquiring minds want to know.

I need to break down some game tape before I reply, but the stuff I saw, he was really dominating the left side. The problem was that they wouldn't go left enough. They would go right and get stuffed. I seem to remember this best for the last drives in the second half. There was that one sack that Wade missed, but the announcers blamed Seth. Then there was the last drive, where I think the entire offense was too freaked out. This year, they just haven't been in enough drives late in the game to work well there.

if i had to pick.... pitts has potential to be a very dominating guard. hoggy boy IMO has been playing pretty solid and once he learns how to read the defense and make the line calls we could let go of mckinney (who isnt a good center or guard) then of course LT should be filled by our 1st rounder. and the jobs of the RG and RT are far from settled

Well, this brings up the question.

Is Pitts better suited to play LT or a guard?idonno:

It seems like he gets beat inside more as a guard than he does outside, but that's just how I see it.

it seems to me he is a better pass blocker than run blocker. although i keep hearing different.

I'm not sure what it is but things just go better when we don't have to have Wand in the game. He did get beat by a couple of pure speed rushes in the game and the pressure increased dramatically once the rookie went out. Wand might be better suited to guard or the right side.
I think the Texans do better with McKinney at guard, since he seems to be only to concentrate on one side at a time. On one play he looked to his right, nobody there and before he could look to his left, the LB had already run by him and thats just poor judgement, vision and anticipation.
How bad is it when we say Pitts is our best lineman?!? He usually is guilty of 2 stupid penalties a game that hurt the Texans.

Well, he was probably a bit rusty (as a result of having not played in quite a while). I wouldn't want him at LT for too long though. What about trying him at RG while Weigert is out? LT Pitts, LG Weary, C McKinney, RG Wand, RT Wade (assuming D-Hog is still out too)

i dont think he even went up a whole lot against sapp. i thought that was pitts who handled him pretty well. idonno: but i still remember that game and he looked horrible where he couldnt get his hands on the defender and move a body. tacklers were easily shedding him and he had a hard time moving to the 2nd level. i think he works alot better in the open and wouldnt mind him seeing time at RT

Oh, didn't know that. Don't get to see any of the games up here (except for the blow-out by the 'Hawks). I can't imagine Capers benching Wade though; there goes that idea.

He's definitely a tackle, not a guard.

Wand was brutal today. McCray ran around him multiple times and even stripped Carr of the ball once. Not good.

BTW, who is the genius who decided to move Pitts from LT back to LG? Nice move.

If McCray runs around Wand as Wand is pushing him beyond the depth of the QB's drop, that's OK. That is a win for the offense.

The strip was a failure.

i think they put washington at center for a play or two then he also got hurt(i guess)... so they were down 2 centers.
