What are our top 2025 draft needs?

Pardon me, but that is a very underwhelming list of draft hits. Digging deeper into how & why?

Couple things on Caserio watch, dealing with O’Brian leftovers (lack of draft capitol) then two distinctly different coaching agendas (Cully/Smith & Ryans).

2021 Cully - 5th 147 TE Brevin Jordan, LB Garret Wallow, DT Roy Lopez

2022 Smith - 4th 107 RB Dameon Pierce, DE Thomas Booker, TE Teagan Quitoriano, OT Austin Deculus.

2023 Ryans - 4th 109 DE Dylan Horton, LB Henry To’oTo’o, 6th 201 C Jarrett Paterson, 6th 202 WR Xavier Hutchinson, 7th 248 S Brandon Hill.

2024 Ryans - 4th 123 TE Cade Stover, 6th 188 LB Jamal Hill, 6th 205 RB Jawhar Jordan, 7th 238 DE Soloman Byrd, 7th 247 DT Marcus Harris, 7th 249 OG LaDarius Henderson.

What stands out here? Lets discuss....

Hands tied by Watson ordeal until compensation recouped.

System fits, obviously players drafted by better coaching & evaluation (Ryans).

Converting later picks into fewer but higher picks should be optimized to get priority propects of need.

Yep, quality over quantity is a mantra I've been preaching for years. I'm just glad Caserio traded up for Nico. Despite the objections of many of the draftniks on here

Guessing Texans selection will be earlier than last season, maybe even 20th if they only beat Tennessee (not a given) then lose @ home in the playoffs. Just too many injuries, suspensions & offensive dysfunction.

Doesn’t make huge difference in 1st (could even trade back again & add another day two pick (we need bodies) but will very much help later rounds.

We all know the needs, WR, Safety, RB, OL, DL, TE & CB. Might even mention late rd. QB if Texans trade Mills.

Currently Texans hold their own 1-4 & 7th plus Buffalo 5th. Trading back in 1st adds another day two pick trading Mills early day three selection, so instead of just 6 picks would be 8 with 5 of those being impact additions & 3 developmental, maybe one of those a surprise.

Free agency is tough. Going to need decisions on current, expensive players/contracts, reduce cap space to maybe add a couple here to shore up starter level & depth.

I hope you're wrong, but this should put Caserio in the Warren range.

Then go get the best IOL in rd 2. I would trade up using future picks if Milum fell.

Then go with BPA after that. I love Collins, Makuba, Golden in rds 3-4.

I would like to trade for one of the Packers WR's and sign Bo Melton in FA.

Just posted Christmas Mock, took two interior offensive linemen with tackle ability but also best suited kicking inside. Want one of this class stud DL (best class I’ve ever seen) streamlining both trenches. Stud Safety to pair with Bullock and stud RB to pair with Mixon.

  • 16.7% didn’t play for the team that drafted them
  • 37% were considered useless. They either didn’t play much or didn’t make the team.
  • 15.3% were considered poor. Had limited playing time and didn’t do well in the time they had.
  • 10.5% were considered average. These are mediocre players that had starts or significant contributions over 2-3 years.
  • 12.3% were considered good. These could be mediocre or average players that were multi-year starters, Pat Elflein or Christian Ponder for example, or perhaps some genuinely good players that didn’t last all that long for the team that drafted them- Sidney Rice for example. This is where the AV metric can over-rate a player based on the number of starts, rather than their performance while on the field.
  • 6.9% were considered Great. This category is the first that includes undeniably good draft picks. In order to be considered great, they would’ve had to play for the team that drafted them into a second contract, and also performed well over those years.
  • 1% were considered legendary. These are future Hall of Famers, multi-year All-Pros among the best in the league for most of their relatively long careers.
And this is the draft in total much less those late-round picks...when I find something more specific and more recent I will post

For me as with other analytics, this is just information similar to PFF, combines, draft mocks or personal opinions. I look at the player skill sets, competition and who he played for and with and then go with my best opinions. I would like to think that is what Nick Caserio does also.

We know from comments on this MB for decades that we the posters cannot agree on players or priority of positional needs let alone match up with NFL GMs. Still , that's where the fun is!

I love Nico but Amon was drafted a round later in the 4th, and has had the healthier career. You could have Amon, plus another player that was forfeited in the trade up. We have no idea who that may have been, but give me Amon and nameless player behind door #2 vs. trading up for an inexperienced prospect. Nico was drafted on spec - size, speed guy. But he was pretty raw.

I missed on Nico. He sat out year during Covid, that’s deep dive in itself. Don’t remember Amon being anything special, just another 5 star USC signing, that usually flamed out or were overdrafted. Turns out he was different. It happens, but now with the portal best really do shine, going to improved situations, coaching & system fits.

Now go out & find another Nico in 3rd or Amon in 4th! I’ve proved from past I cannot. Pula Nacua really stands out to me, was close but didn’t dive deep enough.

It's easy to sit on your couch and mm QB. In real time teams should almost always trade up and get their guy rather than sit wait and hope. The sit wait and hope things was a RS special and rumor has it , sit wait and hope cost this team Mahomes and Tyler Lockett. They ended up with a Pervert and Jalen Strong as their picks. SMH

I just think there's more than one fish in that sea. I think if you see someone clearly special that is a great scheme fit, trade up for him if he's your guy. But you can't tell me Nico was the only guy available that would have worked out here. Not forgetting that you gave up another prospect in the process.

I did take a look at the 2021 draft and outside of the first round, I will say that Nico and Amon are the clear standouts. I'd rather have either one then any of the second rounders. So, that one did work out and I realize there is some cherry picking going on. But I hold that, more often than not, you're better off taking more shots on goal. And we're also forgetting the misses like Metchie. No need to trade up for Metchie. Also, I'm only looking at WR position. They could have landed an end and a LB with those two picks...who knows.

6) Elijah Moore Mississippi | R2-P34 | New York Jets
7) Rondale Moore, Purdue | R2-P49 | Arizona Cardinals
8) D’Wayne Eskridge, Western Michigan | R2-P56 | Seattle Seahawks
9) Tutu Atwell, Louisville | R2-P57 | Los Angeles Rams
10) Terrace Marshall, LSU | R2-P59 | Carolina Panthers

Like how you remind us all it could have been different but despite knowing what we do now about productivity are any of those better dudes than Nico in this locker room?

Hard for any of us to have complete background & medical reports on prospects. Just gotta trust the process & proclaim your fav’s in real time (purpose to me of doing mock drafts).

Let's just say we've got different philosophies. I'm glad Caserio has a philosophy closer to mine.
