whacky rumors surrounding Miami's pick

Adam Schefter was on a Miami radio station this morning, and he said the following:

-There are quite a few teams outside the top 3 that are drooling over Matt Ryan and that Balitmore specifically loves him and is considering a trade up for him if it's not too costly.

-Jake Long is Miami's guy but they are not close on an agreement.

-Here is the biggest news that was reported. He did not give out all the details because he is saving it for a show he is on later tonite on NFL Network but he says a trade partner as recently surfaced for Miami and that "Bill Parcells is open to dealing with anyone."

i doubt Parcells cares at all about the Giants or Jets anymore, but the rivalry is big with Belichick. and potentially Dallas with Jerry Jones, but meh, there's no value there.

lmao Jeff Ireland, Miami's new GM, had a press conference earlier today, and he said something along the lines of "the first pick of the draft has to be the pillar of our defense for a long time." whoops.

According to FoxSports, there's a rumor going around that Michigan OT Jake Long doesn't want to be a Dolphin (ah, well, **** him then!). Long's agent and the Dolphins, however, continue to hash out a contract. The guy next in line IF Jake decides to cross-dress in another city could be DE Vernon Gholston, although I wouldn't count Chris Long out at all. John Czarnecki writes:

"The word on the street is that Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long doesn't want to play for the Dolphins, who continue to negotiate with him as the first overall draft choice. There's a special honor in being the first pick so Long's agents continue to talk. Of course, there is a deadline to these contract talks and then the Dolphins will move onto the next person on their board. Apparently, it isn't Virginia's Chris Long."

I'm not sure how much credence we should give a report when it starts with "The word on the street is..." Because in my experience, that never flies. I once tried getting a myth about my penis started by telling someone, "The word on the street is The Dude has a 14 inch ****, pass it on." The myth never materialized. Perhaps it's because my grandmother doesn't know enough people. Maybe next time I should tell my mailman.

Could this be driven by the "Long doesn't want to play in Miami" story? Put some pressure on Long by making him think they are going another direction? It's just smoke and mirrors at this point in the season, but fun to speculate.

well if he truly doesn't want to play for Miami then it doesn't really matter what Miami says about the defense.

but reports are Parcells is offering him 10 million less than what Russell got last year, so maybe he does hate 'em.

Thats what I have been reading adn hearing. Adam S. on NFL netowrk said the word is Parcells wants to cut a deal with Long but Long's folks are looking for J Russell money which is just F' Up. QB's always get a premium do to position just being the first pick the next year should not get you QB money.

Just another exmaple of how screwed up the NFL draft is. Paying a guy on potential rathe than what he has done in the league!

it's a nonsensical rumor. and Long vehemently denied it.

Thanks for the reports. It's almost a penalty to have a top five pick now. 30 million out the door befor the ink dries. McNair retiring drove Matt Ice's value up... Lots of smoke out there right now . Ozzie swears they are standing on the eight and will not move.

well parcells is trying to change the momentum of draft signee contracts apparently. the rest of the league will thank 'em.

Well 'ol Jake is getting offered 12% more than Mario...what I'm reading anyway...with a lock out on the horizen....I think, JMHO, thirty million or so in the bank now is worth more than the ego at the back end of a contract...just me...I'd get the money in the bank. he's not going to JaMarcus money with what's on the board around him. Market price for an all pro OL is Eighty million set by Steve Hutchinson. He's not that yet.

in terms of years and money per year, Joe Thomas is currently the highest paid offensive lineman in the NFL. Jake Long looks to surpass that.

that is what is stupid ..... guy hasn't even played a down in the NFL

not hating but you know

eh....most players that get a big contract aren't being rewarded for what they've done, they're getting the money because the team that signs them expects big things from them for the length of the contract. i think the same thing applies for rookies.

I agree they should use the NBA as a model and have a rookie pay scale. Its just insane to give an unproven player the kind of money they are throwing at these kids.

While GM Jeff Ireland’s now-infamous “pillar of our defense” quote at his pre-draft press conference seems to bode well for a defensive player being taken with the first overall pick, it’s difficult to ignore the fact that offensive tackle is far and away the Dolphins’ No. 1 need. Vernon Carey and second-year pro Julius Wilson — who’s never seen action in an NFL game — are the only two tackles on the roster. As far as immediate impact is considered, there’s little doubt that Michigan OT Jake Long would make a bigger splash in Miami than anyone else in this draft.

well, Vernon Carey is a damn good left tackle, and there is of course plenty of talk of it not being a wise move to either A) draft a right tackle #1 overall, or B) put the #1 pick at LT when you have a good one there already.
