I have nothing against Vince or UT.
What I do have a problem with is people thinking that QB is our biggest need and that we should spend a #1 pick on a QB because he is from Houston.
I also have a problem with most of the people who want Vince having no argument except "Vince is amazing and he is a hometown hero". And claiming that they would even be able to put up with years of failure because Vince would be our QB.
I think that Vince has a chance to be a very good player in the NFL but it will take a long time for him to get to that level. He is still an extremely raw quarterback and will need 2 or 3 years minimum to be NFL ready. I don't think this franchise can afford to wait at least 2 or 3 years to get back on track to where we are right now.
I believe that if we give David Carr more than 2 seconds to throw the ball, a defense, and another weapon, we can be a playoff contender maybe not next season, but the next. I don't think that it would be unreasonable to believe that we could be .500 or a little better next year.
That is my problem.
Just to help you understand my thinking... and others like me... I don't think QB is our biggest need. I think it is a big need that needs to be answered this year, or next. With Vince Coming out this year, & with us having the number 1 overall, and Vince is the BPA..... to me, this is kinda like that wet paper bag & machette thing....
My argument for taking Vince, is the same as it would be for any other player I feel should go #1. He's a great player, Best player available, and could help our team.
Why is it again, that we don't have time to wait for Vince to fully understand the NFL?? Is it because the great team we've built so far will be falling apart at that time?? See, I think Our team has a better chance of being better 2-3 years from now, than it has of being worse.
Logic tells you that Carr should be a better quarterback, with the right stuff in front of him. But... 4 years after he has come into the league, the chances of that are really not much better than any QB coming out of the draft..... We know about as much about Carr, as we did when we drafted him. The only new information we have now, is that we know the kid can take a punch.... If this were a Boxing match, Carr vs Young, I'll put my money on the small Lanky kid from Cali. All I'm saying, is that it is very likely, that we'll find out next year, that Carr is a flop...... If he doesn't do well next year, I don't see how any one can defend him. He already has outlasted many QBs, that have been in the same situation. Harrington, Quincy, Brooks, Leaf, Warner, Garcia, etc...
You won't see any other team spend 5 years to evaluate a Quarterback.
Now, I'm not bad mouthing Carr, I think the possibility of him doing well next year, is good enough to give him a 2 year extension.... Because we do have a better chance of having a winning season with him behind Center. I think it is very likely, and worth the $5million, to have him play for us, and let us make a playoff run. But I wouldn't bet my career on it.
I'll sign Vince and make it clear, that we are going in another direction....... Away from Carr. The only way he'll start in 2007, is if he wins puts us in a Divisional Playoff game.
Edit Oh yeah, the only reason We have to do something.... start winning, is to please the fans. We don't have a HOF coach who might leave us..... or a WR with a couple of good years left in him, or a Running back on the downhill side of his Career. Draft Vince, and you can take a year or two to get something done.... Heck, If I was a new coach coming into a team like this, in a City like Houston...... I'd take that little insurance policy.
