Well call me a homer but..

I have talked with many people both from Houston and some from outside of Houston. In terms of sheer numbers the majority of people probably have a more negative opinion of Carr, although at the same time most of them acknowledge that, while Carr has not performed up to standards thusfar, he has the talent to be a very good QB if he's given the proper tools to succeed, especially among the people that have shown some evidence of good football knowledge.

Actually, wonger is not far off with my daily experiences, as well. I'm always wearing Texans gear - hats or shirts - so I'm always targeted as the Texan fan to vent on for those around me. And for the most part, Carr is taking a beating, along with the o-line.

I'm not saying the above true, but the average (casual) fan has a perception of this team that they are under-achievers. I can't speak for ALL casual fans, but for the most part, my experience with everyday folks (non-hardcore football fanatics) focuses on the QB.

This year I hope they're all proven wrong, of course. Once we start winning games, these same fans jump on the bandwagon and will sing praises for DC. Such is the way of the casual fan and the cycles of sports.

The "casual fan" also has a tendency to have a very strong opinion and to be completely incapable of supporting it when challenged. The "starry eyed" casual fan.....it takes all kinds.

I never claimed to have any connections or any type of authoritative survey results. Just using numbers based on my personal experiences. And those experiences tell me that a lot of people think Carr is a bust. Until he proves otherwise, he has been. The word "potential" can only take you so far. With that said, I hope he lives up to that potential and proves a lot of people wrong this season... including myself.

Most people I talk to just think Carr has been mishandled and never really given a chance. He was the face of a new franchise as a rookie with the hopes of an entire city that had been deprived of pro football for years on his shoulders. He wasn't given a year to hold the clipboard, but was instead thrown to the wolves by a defensive minded coach behind the worst offensive line in the history of the game. Everyone I talk to isn't necessarily a Carr supporter, but they see his ability and are all interested to see if he is any good because we honestly have no idea.

Why don't you just support the team instead of popping off childish banter about our QB. No matter what sillyness you say about the guy he will still be our QB. So why don't you guys just support him until he's not?

Frankly, this is a football message board so I think it is natural to pick apart your 'Franchise QB' in year 5 if he has struggled to date and the coach pretty much stated that we go how David goes. I think many people have many different opinions and this is the place to share them and debate them. Ok, that's my Mr Obvious moment of the day.

I am probably one of the biggest Carr backers here, but why call someone who criticizes Carr names? We are here to discuss our team, whether we agree on things or not, no need for name calling. Frankly I welcome some of the negative criticism, makes for good debate/discussions.

Good post Texan279....

David Carr is going to be a beast, I don't know whats up with Texans fans. Everybody in America thinks David Carr can be a franchise QB except Texans fans.

It's not that we don't think he can be........ but the fact that he aint.

I was a Jon Kitna fan 'til recently..... I thought he was a smart BretFavre, and he and Holmegren were going to turn Seattle into the sports Mecca of the world..... I cut him slack through his first two/three years..... After the 2000 season, I agreed with Holmegren, that it was time for Kitna to move on...... I followed him to Cincinnatti, thinking that's where Kitna would turn it around.... well, that didn't happen either.

All the while, I called myself a fan, because I liked the kid. I thought he had potential to be one of the greats... But I was never shy about pointing out his weeknessess...... There are things that all players need to work on. Some are glaring.... if your guy keeps doing the same things game after game, year after year... what are we supposed to do??

Kitna never got the good faith Carr has been afforded..... I don't know why. I know many fans who'd take Kitna for Carr straight up..... well, I know one.

I honestly think David needs to move on... I think that would be what he needs to turn his carreer around..... & it does need to be turned around. If I were David, I would have been looking for a new place to call home, and I would have let it be known that that is what I wanted to do.

Bringing in Kubiak & Sherman may have been enough for Carr to decide to stay..... who knows.... But technically, we have done nothing as far as protecting Carr, that we haven't done before....... we've played musical gaurd, we've brought in "veteran" players...... so far, to me it looks like 4 of our starters on Sept10, will be guys who started on our line in 2005(& I think that is the right thing to do)...... If I were David, I'd be afraid......... I'd be very afraid.....

Most of the folks I talk to think David will be fine, if we could ever protect him...... to me, those are the casual fans, who don't know much about football. Or they are the kind of fan who would be happy with a Hasselback, Kitna, Delhomme, Dilfer..... Or the best of that type, DrewBledsoe......

a puppet, a busdriver...... a system QB...... nothing wrong with that, but I don't think they'll ever be great QBs.... Drew might have been great in NewEngland, if that Brady guy didn't bring them three Lombardis......

So what....... am I a David Carr fan?? hmmmmm.....

I believe the Texans can go 13-3..... David will have to be a big part of that. I'll be rooting for the Texans to be 13-3.... I'll be rooting for David to take us there.

And that's all I have to say..... about that.

THAT is the most common thing I have run onto in my discussions with fans elswhere (I travel a bit). A typical thing might be "What the heck are you guys doing, trying to ruin a good QB, get the man some lineman/protection". Can't begin to tell you how many times something along thos line have come up in conversations.

How many people?

I would say at least 100

co-workers

clients

UPS guys

my grandparents (btw... my grandmother hates Carr and simply calls him "that pretty boy !#@#$$@")

the guy in front of me in line at the theatre.

Sounds like a scientific survey to me. Guess everybody does hate Carr.

Grandma sounds kinda salty..I like that in a grandma.:D

I'll be glad when the season starts and we have games to cuss/discuss.

yep. But never let facts get in the way of a good misconception. That "starry eyed casual fan" quickly turns into "glazed eyed casual fan" when you start spouting off football stats and history of schemes, etc.

Most people want to support a winning team, and kick losing teams when they're down.

Nobody wants to be associated with a loser...well, except us hardcore fanatics. :redtowel:

I am extremely happy anout the things I am hearing out of David Carr. He just finished with an interview on 610am and said some good things.

-He said Kubiak is giving him alot of QB tips and tricks to recognise coverages and quickly make descisions.
-He is being expected to learn volumes and is being held accountable by Kubiak.
_Andre is running better, faster, more aggressive routes with deternination and attitude.
-Everone has a chip -he said 'they are pissed'
-said our new rookie tackle stood up to Mario. he said it was a stand-off on the line.

the interview is on going.

someone who can write please post more

while some of that may be true and hopefully it will translate into more wins, the media will ALWAYS promote the local franchises. i want to believe them, but its not that easy. i remember after the 2000-2001 rockets season when they barely missed the playoffs. the very next season they had glen rice and they were promoting that "this year, theyre better(the rockets)" well ultimately they were one of the worst teams in the NBA. while some of what is said may be true and accurate, i know that the media in htown wont tell all the truth because all they want is to see people go through the turnstiles at reliant. i, for one, am an optimist, and so i do actually think that the kube factor will take carr to the next level. he has the goods. now that he has a coach with credibility and a proven track record of working with average QB's to make them great under his belt. lets see come preseason.... :redtowel:

That's kind of a good news, bad news thing. Good Spencer could stand up and bad that Mario didn't blow by. If it's just a time or two that's one thing, but if he constantly holds him out, that is a whole nother thing.
Spencer's a pretty good Athlete himself. If he is putting Atlas to the test , that's a good thing. Not many Marylands on that opening schedule this year. I want to see Atlas making more than one move the first preseason game, that will tell me he is working hard. When we see the "Hump" move, and not just the deep and speed by move....we'll know that we DID get the goods in the draft.
