I like the mix of youth and veteran leadership on the DL. The pass rush will have some juice this season with crafty veterans like Addison and Hughes rotating with younger talented players who are ascending like Green and Greenard.

Its not normal for the Texans to sign a veteran who isn't injury prone.

I expect a heavier than usual D line rotation this season.

I’ll take a steady diet of solid high effort players over one superstar surrounded by jags. That’s what we got in the JJ Watt era until Reader emerged (and was not re-signed).

Bringing in fresh bodies on the defensive line is a good way to keep the Texans in games. The biggest problem the Texans defense faced last season was that they were gassed in the second half of most games.

Next offseason they can start to draft and/or sign marque pass rushers. That is, if no other position group (or groups) fall off a cliff this season.

I agree. I like the idea of a solid lunch pail group, rotated to stay as fresh as possible.
It's a good way to tire out O lines that give the vast majority of snaps to their starting five.

That’s a good way to describe them. High effort players and hopefully by the 4th quarter OLs are tired of the steady rotation coming at them all game.

If the Texans can cancel the primary receiver consistently & squeeze passing lanes altogether, the lunch pail guys may be all you need.

They broke camp last year with 10. Of course a couple of those were hybrid DL/LB (Mercilus, Martin).

I think 9 is the magic number. Only difference is I have Ogbo over Rivers. But they fill the same role and we’ll see how the camp competition shakes out.

However, he has been able to play through them with admirable results. These injuries have begun to noticeably take their toll as seen by a drop off of production last year. Even so, he can definitely be a good addition to the roster as long as his past injuries do not recur or progress.

He has had plenty of time to heal up in the off season. Old injuries may be chronic, but as you say, he has played through them.

Neither Jerry Hughes or Mario Addison played more than 52% of defensive snaps in 2021. Wouldn't expect that to change in Lovie Smith's rotation. It's a logical veteran fit for a younger franchise. They know Jacques Cesaire's style and can show others.

Greenard and Green are the young DEs to learn from the vets.

That's true, but I believe in sink or swim. That's not to say the organization should think that way, but it's kinda like everyone know that the more the young guys are off the field,the older the team stays. Blaklock,Greenard,and too an extent Green needs as many snaps as possible if for nothing else evaluations. Blacklock and Greenard are in year 3 and both are sub 1st rd picks. That means their contracts are coming up in 2 years. That's not to say they can't learn from vets, but who was the mentor to JJ and Whitney?

Per ESPN's Field Yates. Hughes contract:

The two-year, $10MM contract has a guaranteed amount of $4.5MM comprised of a $2.5MM signing bonus and Hughes’s 2022 base salary of $2MM. The contract has two different per game active bonuses for each year.

In 2022, Hughes will receive a per game active bonus of $29,411 for a potential season total of $500,000.
In 2023, Hughes will receive a per game active bonus of $58,823 for a potential season total of $1MM.

This man may not fill the stat sheet like I expect Greenard to this season. But he will be the leader of this defense! An excellent value signing by Caserio.

If he can stay healthy he will be really good on a snap count. I want him to play at a high level 12-14 games this year.

Biggest thing I like that he adds is vet mindset and leadership to the defense. Noticed in the preseason games the defense was calm and able to focus. No level of talent, skill or athletic ability can replace a decade of experience. I expect him to make some plays but more so I expect him to help the young guys learn to make plays.
