Looks like Houston added a veteran QB to their roster. I highly doubt he is here to push our current QBs and will act as more of a mentor and player coach. I think it's a good hire, as Tim Kelly is limited in what he can teach Watson.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement. Also this article is a little misleading making it sound like Watson has never had any help coaching side. Texans went out and got the guy considered to be one of the best QB coaches in the league and the guy that worked closely with the QB Watson is most compared to. I grant you that not a guarantee of success but to make it sound like its only been Kelly and OB is pure BS.

If you put Richard Petty in a garbage truck, he's not going to win many races. Besides being full of garbage, there are a few other apt comparisons between OBs offensive scheme and a garbage truck. Maybe the combination of a fresh mindset, in McCown and Kelly being free of OB will breathe some life into the offense. At 1-6, draw some plays up in the dirt and see what happens.

I imagine every DC in the league feels like the Dread Pirate Roberts when facing OB's offense.

BTW, why was Smith a QB coach here for only one season? He's now a "consultant ", whatever that means.

I've always found it interesting that Sean Ryan was the QB coach for Watson's first two seasons and by all accounts did a great job. Unfortunately, I guess he felt he could not be an OC or play caller under O'Brien and made a lateral move to the Lions.

It was actually a bit of a promotion depending on how you look at it. The plan, from my understanding, is that Kelly would call plays and be the OC but seeing as he was new Smith would advise him and kind of be that security blanket for him. Whether this was a good move or not is up for debate but it wasn't because he did a bad job or couldn't work with Watson or anything like that. I would guess the title change was to reflect the new responsibilities and possibly even a pay increase. Its not uncommon in companies that when you take on additional responsibilities they change your official role even if you are expected to continue your old job as well.

You could be right. In my line of work, when someone in mgmt moves to a "consultant" role, it's a demotion by choice. It typically means they originally wanted to leave the company, but was convinced to stay on as a "consultant".

That's funny because where I work we have people that retire then get rehired as "consultants" which means they make twice the money for half the work and are basically paid because they've done it forever and a day and they can't let that knowledge and experience just walk out the door. Then we have the kind that I mentioned where dumbazz over there can't do the job but he's the boss's kid so we are going to have you prop him up, give you a BS title so no one questions it and then pay you more to not tell everyone how stupid he really is.

i dont get BUT Watson will never miss time "knocks on wood" so whats the point ???? should of picked up another Backup O linemen
Well with Covid he might not so easily catch a bus ride if his lung gets knocked out again. Also I think McGowan is versatile and can play WR and he has to be a better safety than Murray although he has never played either position. He'd probably be better center than Nick Martin cause defenses would fall down giggling.
