Houston Texans at Jacksonville Jaguars: Predictions, picks and odds for NFL Week 13 game
Portrait of Jon Hoefling Jon Hoefling
USA TODAY

The Houston Texans are looking to claim their second consecutive division title, and a win this weekend over the Jacksonville Jaguars would do wonders for their hopes. Not only would it give them a win over a divisional foe, which always feels good, especially a week after losing one, but it would give the Texans, at worst, a two-game lead over the Indianapolis Colts with only five games to go.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have nothing left to play for this season except spite. They are 2-9, vying for the first overall pick, and while it certainly would be great if they could land that selection for the third time in five years, they'd probably trade it for the second or third pick if it meant putting Houston in their place this weekend.

Significant point advantage for Houston. Stroud's opportunity to revert to his rookie abilities. Easy opponent for team to show it is a candidate to go deeper into play offs.

Jags? Wait, I thought this was the pre-game Jets thread.

So we beat the Jags and its proof positive we have the right stuff to go deeper in the P/Os ?
Dang BB I think you may have got an early start on your TG celebrations ?
BTW I'm watching the Lions-Bears: I dunno how we even kept it close vs the Bears a few weeks ago ?

1. Reduce penalties
2. Figure out a way to get Mixon back on track.
3. Score TD’s in the Red Zone
4. Score TD’s in the 2nd half

I'd like to add that the defense can't keep giving up those 2 to 3 big, chunk plays each game that result in an enormous gain or easy TD for the opponent. Happens every single game.

No interceptions.
No sacks.

Did you read my last sentence as you left it out?

Without any real changes the rest of the season gets a "meh" from me.

I wanted to be excited.... and I was.... but the recent losses just sucked the wind out of my sails. Well, not really the losses themselves but the manner at which we achieved those losses. I didn't honestly expect to go undefeated.

I didn't expect us to have turnovers galore in our favor and still add to the L column.

When we need our D to get 8 interceptions a game, 3 fumble recoveries and great clock management to win in a last second FG..... I just can't act like a post season matters.

I want my team to beat the Jags. I want the AFCS title but only cause I don't want anyone else to have it.... but ultimately... meh.

The trouble with winning the banner the way this team is… that would set them up to play the Chargers or Ravens/Steelers division loser in the wild card as the 4 seed.

I don’t see these Texans beating any of them.

I think that is the frustrating part, on paper I could see them beating any of the teams you mentioned (well probably not the Ravens) but they would have to get their collective heads out of their collective butts and stop the stupid mistakes both from play calling to execution.

Yes but accidently because yes I was repling directly to your comment.
I get frustrated after each loss but then usually by the next day I'll start to have optimism creep back in. I keep thinking if we can pick up a few wins and each week get better on blocking and tackling plus decreasing the penalties we can peak going into second round of playoffs.

It’s like when my friend promised me a French model. When she showed up, turns out she was a French fry model. We were expecting filet mignon, and ended up with hamburger helper without the ground beef.

If they keep up these frustrating trends—playing down to weaker opponents, letting average quarterbacks look like stars, giving up huge plays on defense, sputtering in the second half, committing baffling penalties, making questionable play calls, and turning the ball over—they’re bound to lose this game. My confidence in the coaching staff is non-existent. This roster is brimming with talent, yet both the offensive and defensive coaching have been dreadful all season. To make matters worse, there’s been little to no progress or development from the younger players. It’s a colossal waste of potential.

If the history of this season has taught us anything.... dont get turn overs.

Bat it down even if its in your numbers... dont hold on to that crap.... step out of bounds, coat your gloves in baby oil... do whatever you have to do to not pick it off...

The more turnovers you create the more pathetic the loss appears.

Just go out there, get the stop and maybe we have a chance at a last second FG.

GO TEXANS!

The offense doesn't work because the offensive line doesn't work. Fix that and you'll see something. Until then boo hooing about Slowish and CJ and DeMeco or anything else is a waste of effort. The Texans won't be going anywhere this year past the wildcard weekend. Get used to it and hope that something fixes the oline this offseason. Draft choices, new coaches, free agents, whatever, but something's gotta change.

That's why I just want to see something different.

Pretty much anything different would be a step in the right direction. As they say, admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery... until that we are drowning in De nial river.

And there are plenty of alligators in that river biting our ass right now.

The Texans have made no offensive additions from outside of guys from the practice squad or that they had previously had on the roster...They don't think there is a problem.

Sorry

The Houston Texans have claimed Zach Thomas off waivers.
There is that guy during trade deadline week.

I just watched this video from Seth Payne:

And in it he said that the Oline coach has never coached in outside ZBS. That's pretty stupid on whoever brought him in if that is true.

There's a lot of nuances to the ZBS and it sort of does look like a bunch of players and a coach that doesn't know what they're doing.

I wanted to sound really smart and say that no team runs exclusively gap or zone scheme anymore but the results tell me that point is useless. Pretty sure with at least dozen teams running some variation of the Shanny scheme there should have been some system familiar OL coach available.

What magic wand is going to be waived to make the offensive line be what we think they could be? What should my hope be pinned on?

3 veterans failing to live up to expectations and the contracts given to lead this unit. Something has gone wrong….if it’s a coaching or scheme issue, the veterans should be more than capable of pointing this out to Ryans, Slowick, and Strausser. If the veterans are not making this known, then they are every bit part of the problem.

For me, I could start the rebuild by rolling Howard and Mason out the door before they could any more damage and the contracts could be dumped without too much impact.

The issue for me if we decidedly beat Jacksonville, it doesn't mean problems have been corrected. I want that type win but I need confidence of play that should be expected by fans.
This is what I was just thinking. The Texans are supposed to beat the current Jacksonville team soundly. Even if everything looks fixed it won't change the overriding questions much.

Makes you question if the Texans are an outside zone team. I don't think they are. The media & us fans try to pigeon hole them as ZBS, but watching them play, I don't see them attempting to be a ZBS team.

I agree—the organization’s ability to rebuild the offensive line is a task for the offseason. However, let’s not place the blame for glaring defensive lapses on their shoulders. The defense itself has struggled at critical moments, ranking 23rd in points allowed in the fourth quarter and 21st in the third. The bright side? Tactical adjustments, improved coaching, and greater discipline can all be implemented now. These are changes that don’t require waiting for the offseason—they’re within reach. But achieving them demands a fundamental shift in philosophy.

Ryans and Slowik, unfortunately, haven’t exactly inspired confidence with their recent postgame remarks. While my doubts may not matter in the grand scheme of things, what truly counts is how the players feel. Last year, these coaches seemed to press all the right buttons. This year, however, it’s been the opposite—a string of missteps and missed opportunities.

And then there’s team chemistry—something you can’t fake or afford to get wrong. Earlier this season, I noted a troubling lack of trust among the players. If that doesn’t change, no amount of “players-only” meetings or quick fixes will salvage the season. Without trust, this team is headed for disaster.

I think from a fan’s perspective, we first want to see acknowledgement. Don’t pee on us from the balcony and sell it as rain. So far, it’s a train full of gaslighting. Trying to sell us a pile of BS as filet mignon.

Fans aren’t that dumb. And when you consistently insult fans intelligence, they will turn on you.

We don’t need every detail, and every nuance. We need - yes it’s looking like dog crap, and we have some ideas to get it moving in the right direction.

2 years $40 million dead money is much impact.

My understanding of a ZBS:on each play the offensive line steers to the left or to the right blocking any opponent that comes into their cone. When was the last time you saw that?

I was right there with you until we have some ideas...

It is okay for us to be confused as to what the Texans are trying to do, but the team, especially the OLmen, are not sure what they are doing
