The Houston Texans waived defensive end Gary Walker and named Tracy Simien assistant defensive line coach, it was announced today.

Simien joins the Texans staff after coaching the defensive line for the Cologne Centurions of the NFL Europe league in 2005. He spent the 2004 season as a coaching intern in Tampa during NFL Europe training camp.

The Sweeny native played seven seasons for the Kansas City Chiefs, from 1991-97, and spent time with the San Diego Chargers in 1999. He finished his career with five sacks and five interceptions, along with 367 total tackles. He also played for the Montreal Machine of the World League in 1991, the league’s inaugural season, after a standout career at TCU.
 
No, they said at that time they were allowing him the right to make a deal for himself, but they didn't officially waive him until today. It's no surprise he is gone. It was said at the time they let the others go they were going to let him make his own deal and he was gone too. I guess he wasn't able to work anything out with anyone.

hmmm i dunno but i expected them to keep him around for some reason, but i think its a good thing we went ahead and let him go.
 
For some reason I think that this has something to do with David Givens. Todays Houston Chronicle said that the Texans offered Givens 18.5 mil. over 5 years, and that wasnt close to the 25 mil that he was expecting. With the release of Walker, Houston may now be able to offer 20 or 21 mil and hopefuly sign the man they want.

Gary Walker had a 6 million dollar cap hit for this year, but if I'm right and we get all of the money back then we should be able to sign him. We'd only be giving him another 1.5 mil a year if we gave him what he wanted and we were going to give him 3.5 mil.

I really, really, hope your right. Some people say defense wins championships, but if you don't score points you can't win.

That's a great point I thought the same thing when I heard they released him today, all the reports leading up to todays anoncment were that if there was a new CBA we would release him after June 1st.

We still have to pay his bonus. So we didnt save very much money at all.
 
Hmmmm... Payne, Johnson, Smith, Weaver, Babin and Peek? 4-3, 3-4 mix? I still think there is a sliver of hope for Mario Williams coming to us. Now if I could just solve the whole who is our second receiver, value of Bush conundrum then this agenda would be much less transparent and easier to push.

I do have to admit that I kind of like the way our little team is growing via acquistion and attrition. And I have a smiley just for the right exclamation of a salutation :texflag:

With all due respect, how do you have hope? In what way do you see us moving to the #4 pick (Jets)? Given the Jets are rebuilding as well, I don't see the value they have in potentially trading multi-picks for the #1 overall... I would much rather have mult#1 rounders or an early 1 and another early 2.

Stranger things have happened, but I fear the door to trading down is almost all but shut at this point.

Agreed. I am excited about bringing in what we have and the apparent signing of Putzier, which most people believe will happen. On offense, our targets this year are Mathis, Johnson, Davis, Bush, and Putzier... One would have to believe that on any given touch, 4 out of 5 of those guys can break a big play. The scheme we utilize for them is the key.

This is balancing out nicely.

As humans we all should keep hope alive. I unfortunately allocate to much of my hope for the health of the franchise than I do towards my hope for world peace. But that is just me, as I think that a Texan win in the Super Bowl could just as easily foster world harmony more so than a can of coca-cola.
 
Walker had a very up and down career here with the Texans, I'd say we got about 35% worth of his salary, so really, he's a good player, but not consistant enough for us to justify his salary. With that release don't we eat a ton of signing bonus?

We're going to take a $5.5 million cap hit next year. Casserly was stupid to sign him. He should have learned from the Boselli fiasco that injury prone athletes don't get less injury prone as they get older. More evidence of Casserly's incompetence.

A. Never under-estimate the value of caffeine.
2. Give the recent past, the next Texan win might spawn another legendary sports achievements ala the 1980 hockey team, except we call this one, the "Miracle near Rice"
Lastly. I too was optimistic into being able to 'someway,somehow, by the miracle of St. Casserly' turn the #1 overall into possibly D'brick and Vernon Davis, then Davis had to go all crazy at the combine and dash my hopes by running through a wall and leap out the building, while catching a football, and doing charity work.
 
Im glad they released him cuz he wasnt getting any younger at age 33.

He has $7.3 million of signing bonus that has to be accounted for this season or (if the person above is correct about the pre- June 1 rule this season) over the next two seasons. Total failure of a contract extension. That's why people ***** about these things. Wade is in the same boat.

Holy cow. That's just messed up. I'll never say anything about Casserly being a salary-cap guru again.
 
Casserly supervises scouts, ranks players, and is 1/2 of the team (along with Ferens) who brings in FAs and draft choices - with coaches input. Ferens is VP of negotiations and the Texans cap guy. Casserly takes the brunt of it because he has the title of GM.

Clubs can waive two players before the cap year (in this case, March 11) and have their costs amortized after June 1 -- preventing them from paying roster bonuses simply to carry contracts into the summer. Example: Tennessee two years ago paid Eddie George a $1 million roster bonus in March so it could attempt a later contract renegotiation. When that failed, the Titans cut him. Because it was after June 1, Tennessee rolled George's unamortized acceleration into the following cap year. That was a popular idea throughout the league, with June 1 a magic date for cutting veterans to save cap room. Now, teams are spared the trouble by designating two players per club, with their salary-cap costs carried against the present cap until June 1 -- at which time the unamortized portion rolls over into 2007. The benefit to the player is that he gains immediate freedom to look for work; the benefit to the team is that it is saves money and cap room by having the unamortized portion of a bonus -- which normally would've count against this year's cap -- rolled into next year, as if he were cut after June 1.

So we'll be feeling cap effects all the way until 2008....great. I guess it is half the remaining bonus this year's and next. Wow GW's last two years of oft-injured service just cost how much over four years? Not great value there. Too bad good luck GW I wish it could have worked out better.

As initially discussed in the days prior to the opening of the free agent signing period, the Texans finally waived defensive lineman Gary Walker on Monday. It is believed that the team will carry Walker's $5.83 million cap figure until June 1, then remove his salary off the books, retaining just a $1.83 million figure this season. The Texans will then be forced to carry forward Walker's remaining unamortized bonus of $5.5 million to the 2007 cap as dead money

We actually lose cap space for this year. If we had waited until after June 1 we would have saved space this year but lost space next year, so it was just a matter of when they wanted to lose that cap space, plus he asked to be released so he could get into the free agent market now while teams are spending. I don't think the lost cap space is a big deal though, other than Putzier and maybe Flanagan I think we're done in free agency and just need to save money to sign our draft picks, and I think Wade will be cut after June 1 which will save us money against the cap.
