OK, where to start on this one. VY threw for 281 on Kansas, while he also threw for 270 yards against Ohio State. Was he "padding" his stats in that game too?

I understand that. What I don't understand is how it's an illustration of how good you are by including the record of a that beat you. Had VT beaten Miami, then it would obviously be understandable because they would not only be undefeated (like Texas), but they'd also have a superior SOS. As it is, they got their butts kicked by the one really good team they played.

Total defense is based on yards allowed...not points. Although scoring defense is another statistical category. In the NFL (as well as college), they use yardarge to determine your defensive ranking.

Kansas is now 20th in total defense. Before playing Texas, they were ranked 5th. That's what happens when you get dookie stomped by an offense like Texas'.

This is not to say Kansas has/had that great of defense (UCONN is ranked 7th right now but who believes they have the 7th best defense in the country?). But they're as good as the defenses that were mentioned previously.

He will need 2 to 3 years in the league before he is a legitimate passing threat, but after he becomes one watch out if they put talent around him. If he goes to a place like Detroit or Baltimore he will be lights out in year 3.

I wonder what the ratings will be for the BCS game assuming its Texas & USC :tv: could give the Superbowl a run for the money if they moved it to Saturday, instead of a week night :cool:

I just hope its a good game, nobody gets hurt and the best team wins, then the Texans draft all the best players off both teams & call it their draft :yahoo:

It takes most college players a few years to show they can run a pro offense. Peyton took two or three years and look at him now. Hype is something Ryan Leaf had and something T.O. lives on. Carson is a Heisman College QB who is growing into a good NFL QB.

Last year Kansas lost 41-10, Baylor got beat 35-0, Colorado was beaten in Big 12 title game 42-3 by Oklahoma. These games seem real similar to Texas opponents this year? I think Jan. 4th could have a similar ring as well. :ok:

Texas won at Ohio State, at night. No team had ever done that before. That's no easy task.

But your scenario very well could happen. Wouldn't be the strangest outcome ever.

I hadn't found any stats for total yards given up, only points so that was what I was having to base the defensive rankings on. As for strength of schedule, that should include all the teams that you have played in there, not just who you've beaten. If it only included who you had beaten then losing to Miami or losing to Duke would have the same negligent effect on it, so including that shows the quality of opponent that they lost to.

Perhaps it was just being better prepared, but it seemed like USC had speed on OU last year. I don't see that being the case against Texas this year. Our team speed is tremendous.

I think scoring defense could also be used as a measure but it factors in all of the points. So if somebody returns a punt against VT, is that a reflection of their defense? I don't think it is but that's how it'd be reflected in the scoring statistics.

As for the SOS, fair enough. We don't see eye to eye on the issue but we're close. VT does have a little tougher SOS than Texas...but they also have a loss to go with it.

You're right on that, generally total yards given up is the top measure of a team's defense, but like I said I hadn't found any stats on that when I first made that post about Kansas' defense. Points allowed obviously can include points off of special teams or turnovers and not necessarily reflect on a defense's abilities, but both statistics should be considered together. I'm glad that other website was pointed out to see the rest of team defense stats because ESPN.com didn't have them.
 
What the Hell is this a conversation about UT SOS. Look UT is a good team damn can we get past this, I am so f-in tired of hearing about UT. They play in a weak Big 12 this year, but they are still winning and they will soon have one loss in 2007 to USC

Again, we pretty much see eye to eye on this. I only brought up Kansas' ranking because it was previously mentioned by another poster that despite their records, NC State and Boston College were better than their records indicated because they have tough defenses. So when you look at their respective defensive rankings (scoring/total)...

NC State - 33/16
Boston College - 9/14
Kansas - 38/20

Based on those rankings, would it be fair to say that Kansas also fits the description of a team that is better than their mediocre record? This was all I was pointing out.

1. The conversation about UT's SOS correlates to the level of talent Vince Young (topic subject) has played against.

2. Don't open threads with content about Texas or their players if you're tired of hearing about them. You know what I do when I'm tired of eating pancakes? I don't eat them.
