Vince Young: Any thoughts about switching him to WR or TE?

Hottoddie

I used to like Vince Young, but when he came into our stadium, spiked the ball at our logo & said he owned this town, that was it for me. He disrespected us & I lost all respect for him.

Having said all that, if he truely has matured (as some articles have speculated), I would be willing to take another look at him as a football player.

I've been reading the articles where teams have asked Tebow to switch positions & he steadfastly refuses to do so. So, that got me to wondering if Young would be willing to switch positions & could he adjust to the new position?

I realize he's 30 years old, but hey, Vick is 33 years old & still has amazing athleticism. Does Vince still have his speed & athleticism? With his speed & size (6'5", 232lbs) he could play TE & would create some nightmare matchup problems for the defense. As a WR he could become a beast (if he can catch the ball). He wouldn't be under as much pressure playing these positions as he was playing QB.

However, there are a lot of questions that would have to be answered first:

Has he grown up?
Would he be willing to switch positions?
Does he still have his speed & athleticism?
Can he catch the ball?
Can he block?
Can he be taught?
Can he accept criticism?
Would he accept a non-guaranteed 1 year contract?

Would you take a look at him in this capacity, or have you written him off permanently? If he could play one of those positions & still has a decent arm, he could give Gary some intriguing options for a gadget play or two. I do realize that Gary is a very conservative coach, but I believe I've also seen some subtle signs that he may be changing his conservative nature a little.

In any event, it's just a thought that may have no merit at all. What are your opinions?

VY will only play as a QB. Would not be surprised to see an injury create a backup spot for him on some unfortunate team's roster. He'll still be challenged with learning a playbook and executing as designed.

He can't make a roster over names like Brian Hoyer, Josh McCown, Dan Orlovsky, Curtis Painter and up until last season, David Carr. He's done in this game.

Let's think about this?
- Do you want VY at TE trying to block a DE?
- Do you think VY has enough speed or knows enough about route running make a passable WR?
- Given his injury history, how many licks do you think he could take from DBs if he had to catch one across the middle?
- Who would you cut to make room for a guy who only has a possibilities "for a gadget play or two"??
- Who would you not dress out of the 47 so VY could take his spot??

These questions added to the ones you posed about his maturity all equal an unhesitating, "no thanks" from me.

VY is probably just hoping for a switch from fry person to drive thru window. Man, can you imagine that big dummy taking your order at Jack in the Box drive thru? Maybe he's best suited for the grill...

If someone is going to make a drastic position change like this you do it in college or as a rookie not at age 30.

I think VY should pole-vault at the chance to play another position on a NFL team. Water boy comes to mind.

VY, like Tebow, should go to Canada and win a couple of Grey Cups and then get a job on TV.

Maybe VY is too old at this point, but Canada and Arena ball have produced later career NFL stars at QB. Arena ball produced Kurt Warner; the CFL brought us Warren Moon and Jeff Garcia. So it can happen.

That said, even two "lights out" years in those leagues that gets him another look in the NFL would have him what, 32? Still, his bouncing in and out of the NFL (and often being a backup) means his body may be a "younger" (no pun intended) 32, since he's taken far fewer hits than someone who has been an NFL starter for 8 years at that age.

Tebow, on the other hand? I think he'd be a good fit in Canada and it might increase his stock for a future NFL comeback if he excelled there. He's still young enough that a couple great years in Canada would leave him in the prime of his career.
