Utilizing our tight ends

I agree with the announcers Sunday, why don't we utilize our TE's more??....Seems like we need some surprises going in our game stragedy to throw teams off....

I really think we need someone that can block AND catch. I don't have a problem with us going out and getting another one. If Joppru pans out too then we are doubly blessed at the position. Right now it is one of our weakest starting positions.

I think they will put Joppru on IR tomorrow. He will probably be our starter next season. I hear they like what they see in practice.

We don't use our TE's much in routes because they just are not that good. If you are going to put Billy Miller in a pattern you may as well put in Armstrong. Armstrong gets more seperation and is a better target than Miller. Miller can't block so it tips off the opposition to our intentions. Bruenner is a blocking TE. He is a small Tackle.

I know Miller can't block, mainly because I've heard that so many times before, but then why did we do so well, running even, against Tennesee? Could it be that he helps the running game , by catching passes over the middle, more than he hurts it by not being a better blocker? I'm just thinking that, until somebody else comes along, that using Miller is maybe better than using Bruener, who never catches passes.

For the elevendy-seventh time, why don't we see what Murphy can or cannot contribute to the TE position? Can he do any worse than what we have going now? I look at Gates SD, Franks GB, etc., and they are doing great because they are getting a chance to show what they can do. We signed him,why not use him? :hmmm:

Why not use both Miller and Armstrong at different times. Why does it have to be either/or? When Armstrong is in, with a 4 WR formation, the defense will probably go to a dime package. But, with Miller and Bruener in the game, they would likely have the standard package on D. If they play Miller in a 3 wr set, they probably have a nickel package in. If Miller is matched up with a LB, that to me is at least as good as Armstrong on a nickel or dime corner. What I am getting at is that I like to mix things up. The more predictable you are, the easier the opponent can game plan against you. I think my position was proven correct last Sunday. Miller caught four balls, including a TD, and it seemed to throw the Titans off.

Vinny, can you explain what the difference is in our offense when we use BMiller/TEs? One thing I noticed was how it made our redzone offense much better. Usually teams have let us dink and dunk all the way downfield until we get in the redzone and then key on Davis after that to stall us. Seemed like once we used BMiller before getting in the redzone, they could no longer just key on Davis.

Any reason this wasn't used earlier? Was DArmstrong's emergence that much of an issue?

I remember Miller being utilized alot Sunday. I even remember a pretty good block by Miller. But, I agree, we need a real tight end. Maybe it's Joppru.

does anyone know how often we line-up w/our fullback? It seems like an obvious plus for our running game to have a lead blocker.......

ProFootballWeekly.com

Also, we’re told the Texans are unlikely to start using a fullback more in the offense as a lead blocker on running plays, even though running room has often been hard to find for Davis.

Yeah, we need to use a lead blocker. There's a reason that they all use a blocking back. I use to think blocking backs were pretty useless and preferred the extra slot receiver or an extra TE, but what did I know.

Here's an oddball idea. Take out the TE. Go with the I-formation, but with no TE and use 3 wide-outs. In other words, just switch out the TE for armstrong. I think Vinnie already mentioned that, but I don't know if he was serious. Sort of like the run-n-shoot, but with a blocking back and one less receiver. We could call it the I-in-shoot, lol.

I don't want to make this a regular thing, but I'd like to see it occasionally (I think?). I don't know. Maybe it's a dumb idea?

Right now, I just kinda wanna see more of Miller again.

When the field shrinks in the red zone there is no longer enough area for the 3-step short throws on slants, hitches and the RB dump-off pass. Carr really struggles inside the pocket. I mean, he really struggles. Most of his big completions are outside the pocket when he is on the run. Carr is not a very good passer in the pocket.

What's the big difference? Armstrong has caught several clutch passes in lieu of Miller this year. Miller had a TD on a broken play but it wasn't the scheme or the fact that he was a TE that created that TD.

I wonder if this has anything to do with his side-armed delivery or if he became gun-shy after getting pounded his first year.
