Update on 1-AA All American Jelani Clement

I talked to Jelani yesterday and here's what he told me.

He was not happy with his pro day, as it was run in 30 degree conditions on grass while snowing...

He feels like he is more of a football player than a tester (ex: game speed vs. track speed) and that may hurt him in the team's evaluation of him.

He did not do positional work and he is not happy about that, but he's still looking to schedule something for that.

He is up at Hampton right now coaching the offensive line since Coach Terry Beauford left for some other school.

He's lost weight since the LVAAC (all star game). He's gone from 305 to 297.

He feels that b/c of his height (5'11), he will be a 7th rounder- undrafted free agent at worst.

Jelani and I have been talking a few times a month over the course of this past year and he has done a lot for me in taking the time to do season journals for nfldraftblitz.com

I know both Jelani and Jay Bianco, his agent, and they are both true classy people.

As much as I'd like to see Jelani go really high in the draft, it's just not going to happen b/c of the height issue.

Will he succeed if someone gives him the chance? NO DOUBT IN MY MIND.

He wouldn't be able to play everywhere on the line, he's only 5'11 or so, and center is the only lineman position that you can really be that short.

The Texans first contacted him in November, along with the Jaguars, Seahawks, Redskins, Lions, and Bills.

At the time he was considered a 3rd-5th round selection, but is now not as highly considered due to his height.

Still, Jelani is a great player with a wonderful resume to show for it. If a team gives him a chance, their scouting staff will look smart.

I wouldn't exactly call this contact by the Texans important persay. Teams contact as many players as they can to make sure they don't miss anyone that may be lurking out there unnoticed.

All I can say is my eyes will be glued to the TV set to see if we take him.

UPDATE: 7:30 just got off the phone with him, here's what he had to say in better spirits

Teams that were there at pro day looking at him

Packers, Texans, Colts, Jaguars, Bills, Seahawks, Cardinals, Redskins and Lions.

teammate Jerome Mathis has scheduled workouts with the 49ers and the COLTS!!!!! yuck if he goes there.

Jelani and his agent Jay are trying to set up a date in which they can schedule position workouts on March 30 at Velocity Sports in Virginia Beach.

Jelani will also be attending William and Mary's pro day to snap for QB Lang Campbell.

Jelani is sending me a highlight tape on him and I'll try to get it up on the site so you can see why I'm still high on this guy.

Jelani also told me to thank you guys for all your support and curiosity about him and welcomes the thought of being a Houston Texan.

Cool, thanks for the update...Do you know his strength numbers, because his height/weight combo isn't too incredibly impressive, bt not overly important...If he can play, then he can play, and I'd like to take a look at him...
